Game 155: Reds vs Brewers
Milwaukee Brewers at Cincinnati Reds, Sep 21, 2008 1:15 PM EDT

Here's something weird: Bronson Arroyo has had a decision in 16 of his last 17 starts during which he has gone 11-5. His one no decision was his start against the Brewers 11 days ago when David Weathers was kind enough to let CC Sabathia off the hook and take a win away from Arroyo. In that start, Arroyo did a pretty good job of matching Sabathia and only allowed 2 unearned runs over 7 innings pitched. Hopefully he can do the same this afternoon.
Today is fan appreciation day at GABP, so I'm sure the majority of you are at the ballpark trying to win free groceries from Kroger. Let me say though that Rick, Alan, and I (and even JD if he were still here) appreciate all of your participation in this site. We've kinda been playing the string out for the last month or so as both Rick and I have been working on moving and Alan has been busy repopulating the planet. We're planning on picking things back up once we get settled again, probably right after the end of the season. Thanks for sticking with us even though we've essentially been a game thread site for most of this season. We'll try to keep things interesting during the off-season.

Go Reds
I went to the game yesterday and it was one of the best games I have been to in a long time. It was fun to see the kids playing well. Also, where the hell did all the Brewers fans come from? It seemed like they made up over half the crowd. It was almost like a Cubs or Cardinals game. Next thing you know the Pirates will be showing up in GABP.

might as well ... god knows they don't show up at their own stadium

McClung is looking a little wild
And his fastball is sitting in the low 90’s. He was used in relief three days ago in Chicago, so that might be affecting his performance today.
Votto's been on fire
But he swung at the first pitch when McClung has been so wild. And that’s one out.

Also, since I can’t seem to find a “trading block” area of the FF site, is anyone interested in a RB? I have LT, Lynch, Ronnie Brown and Jonathan Stewart. I need WR…….
"Aio, quantitas magna frumentorum est."
mlbtraderumors thinks the Reds should go after Magglio Ordonez
this winter. he would certainly be an upgrade over BP in the cleanup spot, and if Walt wants to make a run next season (all signs point to him doing so) i think this might be one of the best ways to do it.
the question is, what would it take to make it work? if the Tigers are going to move him, it looks like they would want to move the money. perhaps a package centered around Homer? i dont personally want to move Homer, but my guess is Walt has no recollection of Good Homer and might be more inclined to move him.
personally, the deal i would want to see is Coco + a mid-level prospect. Maggs is due about 50 mil over the next 3 years, and Coco is due around 40, so thats a net savings of 10 mil for the Tigers. plus, it gives them the closer they need, which would be a move for contention for them for next year. Coco does have a no-trade clause (i think) so who knows if that would even work out. just some food for thought.
"for integrity of races and the game" - Dusty Baker
by Charlie Scrabbles on Sep 21, 2008 6:52 PM EDT reply actions
i feel like a trade to detroit would be a wash for Coco.
I think Detroit has as much of a chance of suceeding next year as Cincinnati, and Detroit is only a couple hundred miles away from Cincinnati. So if he feels Detroit is more likely to win he may take that trade.
What does that do to Cincinnati’s bullpen? Weathers should be gone, Affeldt will probably be gone, Lincoln may be gone and/or a one year wonder, that kinda leaves Burton and Bray holding the bag. I really would like to keep Coco because that gives the Reds three solid relievers to handle the 7th, 8th, and 9th. I feel pretty good handing to the ball to all the for mentioned pitchers.

Jenks plays for the ChiSox
the Tigers have Fernando Rodney and Joel Zumaya, and Todd Jones has been their closer for the past few years. Jones is probably done for and the they will most likely be looking for a closer this offseason because of the injury concerns for Rodney adn Zumaya (that is, if they are interesting in contending instead of totally dismantling. and i assuming contending, because they have a hell of a lot of money in that team).
as for how our pen will be affected by the loss of Coco, i think Burton, Bray, and Roenicke can hold down the back end with guys like Herrera and Ramon Ramirez taking care of the front end. in this scenario, i would also be open to bringing Stormy back. im not big on the VP BS, but with so many youngsters i think he could be a positive influence. not to mention he’s pitched alright for us the past few years.
the main reason i want to move Coco is because that big fat contract for a closer is so totally stupid. an expensive closer is fine if everything else on your team is put together. we just arent there yet. and if there is an opportunity to move him i would jump all up on that.

Totally misread that for some reason. As usual, I’m an idiot.
"Aio, quantitas magna frumentorum est."
i like Roenicke
but has yet to show a thing in the majors. Coco is prooven. I just like the bullpen falling in line behind Coco. Burton may outpitch Coco, and if he does he should be promoted to closer, but even if that happens I think Coco would be a fine, if not damned expensive, 8th inning guy.
