Game 138: Reds vs Pirates

Pittsburgh Pirates at Cincinnati Reds, Sep 2, 2008 7:10 PM EDT

Next Game

Pittsburgh Pirates
@ Cincinnati Reds

Tuesday, Sep 2, 2008, 7:10 PM EDT
Great American Ball Park

Ian Snell vs Aaron Harang

Clear. Winds blowing out to left field at 5-10 m.p.h. Game Time temperature: Around 85.

Complete Coverage >

W-L ERA WHIP K BB
2008 - Ian Snell 5-10 5.77 1.85 110 78

W-L ERA WHIP K BB
2008 - Aaron Harang 4-14 5.27 1.45 128 41

A matchup of two very disappointing pitchers.  The Pirates had hoped that Snell would perform like an ace this season, much like the Reds expected from Harang.  Despite Harang's consecutive good starts, I'd still like to see him shut down for a month, but I'm overly cautious when the season doesn't matter any more.

Then again, the Reds STILL haven't been eliminated from the division.  If they keep winning and the Cubs keep losing for the rest of the season, who knows, right?  Stranger things have never happened.

Stranger things never happened, huh?

Then how do you explain that every time I type a zinger in a game thread it spontaneously turns to gold?

Count it.

if there was ever a game worthy of a good game thread, this is it

if we get to 250 comments, will that be more than people at the game?

by chandrathan on Sep 2, 2008 5:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Most likely

Will there be more people attending the Cincinnati-Pittsburgh game tomorrow night, or the US Open Cup Final between DC United and the Charleston Battery? I can tell you which one I’m going to.

by Brendanukkah on Sep 2, 2008 5:16 PM EDT up reply actions

It varies

DC will typically draw around 20,000 for a Saturday game. Some teams will have attendance down around 10,000 but the average yearly attendance works out to probably between 17,000-19,000 a game.

New York gets really bad attendance

But they’re finally getting their own stadium, so they don’t have to play in cavernous Giants Stadium anymore. United still plays in RFK, and will for the foreseeable future, since Nationals Park caused the DC Council to sour on building stadiums. But even though it’s big, United often sells out the lower bowl, and visiting fans will often sit in the top bowl behind the north goal. Lately, a pretty big contingent of the Sons of Ben – fans of the to-be-formed Philadelphia MLS franchise – have been coming to games.

The great part about going to see games at RFK is that the seats for the supporters sections aren’t fully secured (thanks, dual-purpose stadiums!), so they shake and bounce like crazy. It’s amazing.

by Charlie Scrabbles on Sep 2, 2008 5:53 PM EDT up reply actions

I have a soft spot for Crew Stadium

Since it was the first soccer specific stadium ever built in America. I’ve seen some Crew games there, the US Men’s National Team beat Mexico 2-0 in a World Cup qualifier, and some Women’s World Cup games. It’s definitely fun.

The Galaxy game will be tough to get tickets to, cuz that’s the Traveling Beckham show. Never mind the fact that the Crew have the best record in MLS this season…

i am kind of against shutting Harang down for the season

mostly because I feel that if there is somethign wrong with his tendon the damage has already has been done. We might as well see if his arm is sound, if it is he will be fine, if it isn’t well, he cna get the surgery done now, and will have more value for 2010, then if nothign happens until next Spring.

by Charlie Scrabbles on Sep 2, 2008 6:43 PM EDT reply actions

Why is C-Pat playing?

It should certainly be Wilkin Castillo in LF, Dickerson in CF. No excuse not to play Wilkin over C-Pat. Dusty will give a lefty-righty matchup excuse, forgetting that his favorite new “tool” is a switch-hitter.

I get Dusty trying to defend his players – good managers do that. But there’s no explaining this contradictory action of playing a veteran who might be the worst player in the game INSTEAD of playing qualified youngsters. What’s more, we DESPERATELY need to know if Dickerson is “for real” and can play CF in the bigs. Not knowing this will CRIPPLE us in the off-season player personnel search.

If Jerry Narron would have dropped dead at the right time, Piniella would be our current manager. Unfortunately, Jerry’s wife always reminds him to wear a jacket so he “won’t catch cold”.

Thanks for nothing, Mrs. Jerry.

by PeteyHendrix on Sep 2, 2008 7:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Defending his players

And yet, he’ll rarely come out and defend them to an umpire during the course of a game. And he tells the press they have injuries that they themselves are unaware of. Dusty’s a peculiar cat.

by Brendanukkah on Sep 2, 2008 7:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Seriously, Patterson can't play left field?

There’s no reason he should figure into our future, whereas Dickerson at least has a chance to. He’s been pretty decent in his time up here, and I’d like to see him as a bench player next season. But I’d really like to see what he’s able to do in centerfield. So how ’bout we play him there, Dusty, instead of CoPat?

And Keppinger flew out on the first pitch of his. What can we learn from this?

by Brendanukkah on Sep 2, 2008 7:23 PM EDT up reply actions

In Kep's defense,

There’s no need for him to be patient once Dickerson got Ian to throw 10 pitches and he wasn’t wild. If we were between innings after our starter had taken the hill…perhaps a different story.

by Man Mountain on Sep 2, 2008 7:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Let's try that again....

If Dickerson has already worked Pittsburgh starting pitcher Ian Snell for 10 pitches before the first out, I think it’s OK for Keppinger to be aggressive and swing at the first pitch of the SECOND AB of the game when we’re at home – perhaps he’ll sting a get-ahead fastball.

If we’re on the road, I’d want Kep to be a bit more selective, as he’d be batting while OUR starting pitcher was trying to rest in the Reds dugout.

I hope that’s much clearer…cuz my previous post was about as clear as a fogged-up car window at a drive-in….or the reason C-Pat is playing today.

by PeteyHendrix on Sep 2, 2008 7:32 PM EDT up reply actions

I think you're still mixed up on home/road

We’re at home tonight, and Harang pitched first – he WAS resting in the dugout while Kepp was at bat.

Not to mention that if we had a team of 9 CDicks, we’d be through the starter before the fifth, every game.

Everybody's a jerk. You. Me. This jerk.

by andromache on Sep 2, 2008 7:39 PM EDT up reply actions

You're right.

I wasn’t watching the gamecast carefully enough at work…shut my hole. So Kep should have been more patient, maybe.

Ken could probably speak to this better, but I thought they were looking to get rid of Burrell, and I’d even heard Ryan Howard’s name thrown around as a possibility to leave Philly. Of the two, I would imagine they would keep Howard instead of Burrell.

and spot starter. Mostly a clubhouse influence signing, and we could use one right now. I see Votto or Pat Burrell in LF for the Reds next year, so getting Casey one start per week seems doable.
