Burton, Ramirez recalled; Minor League Playoffs start tomorrow
Rosters expanded yesterday and the Reds have added Jared Burton and Ramon Ramirez so far. Burton is coming off of the DL for a strained latissimus muscle. Ramirez was sent down to make room for a 4th catcher over the weekend, but it was clear that was just a temporary move since he was sent to Sarasota where he would not have had a chance to pitch again. I believe he is due to pitch next on Friday versus the Cubs.
The minor league playoffs start on Wednesday. Two of the Reds affiliates made their respective post seasons. The Louisville Bats will send Matt Maloney to mound against the Durham Bulls. The Bats tied Scranton for the best record in the International League. Because of the Bats playoff situation, don't expect to see many more callups right away. After the playoffs end, we'll likely see Rosales, Herrera, and Richar again. We could also see Bobby Livingston for a start and maybe Matt Belisle in the bullpen, but I'd consider those two to be less likely.
The Dayton Dragons will also be starting their playoff run tomorrow as they take on the Lansing Lugnuts up in Dayton. Jeremy Horst will go for the Dragons taking on Lansing’s Mark Rzepczynski (for some reason, my spellcheck doesn't like that name). The Dragons are led on offense by full season all stars Brandon Waring and Zack Cozart.
Anything else going on in Redsland of interest? Hey, the Pirates are coming to town tonight. In other news, I'm planning on repeatedly stapling my fingers tonight.

Pirates coming to town
Don’t forget that Sept. 19 is International Talk Like A Pirate Day. It’s a Friday night, and we’ll be playing the Brewers, so it would be only right to commemorate it as International Slur Like A Drunk Pirate Day.

Also,
Thank Christ Burton is back. We might actually close out some games now. I’m interested to see what Ramirez can do. He looked pretty decent in his first start.
The lack of activity around here the last couple days made me wonder if I’d missed JD’s order to evacuate the site in front of the hurricane. BubbaFan’s warnings made me all antsy.

I have always wondered this:
If a club sends a player down, knowing full well they will be calling them up within a few days, do they actually fly the player out?? I mean did Ramirez fly down to FL saturday only to fly back today? Are there rules that you have to report to the minor club or could Ramirez have just chilled in Cincy and not suited up?

I believe
that I read Sarasota’s season is already over, so it was strictly a procedural move. I suspect that Ramon stayed in town, likely at the team hotel. Anyone know definitively?

I'm still pumped
The race between Patterson and Bako for rapturous ineptitude is heating up. Looks like it’s gonna go down to the wire. The winner gets a multi-year deal, I’m sure. Really, I’ll give a passing off-season grade to Jocketty if CoPat is not given a contract. Goddamn that’s sad.
Overserved and underwhelmed.

Speaking of spellcheck...
Is that the official spelling of “Polak”?
I’ve seen it spelled a number of different ways, including:
1. “Polock”
2. “Polack”
3. “Polak”
4. “Pollack”
5. “Pollock”
6. “Pollak”
What is the official RR spelling?
Hey Dusty...Are you sure you're OK? You might need an MRI.

According to historians of the European diaspora, Ellis Island was one of the most meticulous operations in bureaucratic history.
Those families who claim that Ellis Island officials changed their names either didn’t know how to write their names in their original language, actually came through another processing center or changed the name themselves.

Bronson named NL Co-Player of the Week
Arroyo led the NL in innings pitched with 16 while going 2-0 with a 1.69 ERA, including the Reds’ first complete game of the season at Houston on Tuesday.
Guzman and Arroyo each won the weekly award for the first time in their careers.

FYI - Slyde - The Arrow 3 in 1 Staple/Nail gun is light weight and easy to use.
I have found it useful for driving nails into my forehead in crucial times like when Juan Castro pinch hit for Hobbs. And it is only $39.99 at Home Depot.

Anyone have Jerry Reed in the dead Pool?
I don’t know who he is, but apparently he was in Smokey and the bandit.
Also, the movie announcer guy died.

I can't believe you don't know who Jerry Reed is...
not only was he in Smokey and the Bandit, he sang the theme song…
he was the truck driver carrying the Coors beer that Bandit was clearing the way for.
you need to know these things or they’ll revoke your kentucky citizenship.

the 10 day rull doesn't apply to september call ups?
also I feel like i remember reading in Hal’s blog that Mercker wanted to be added to the roster in September. Anyone know anything like that. Am I just making shit up again?

Why would the 10 day rule apply?
nobody uses the full 40-man roster anyway. What would the 10-day rule be preventing?

depends
with the off day, it could go either way. Ramirez’s next turn in the rotation is Friday, but Arroyo would be on normal rest. If not Friday, then he’ll go on Saturday.
