Did you know that Kyle Lohse used to pitch for the Reds and his performance for the Reds wasn't quite as good as it has been this season?  Blah blah blah.  Lohse is not a bad pitcher, despite what many in Cincinnati seem to think.  He's not great, and he's probably performing at his peak this season, but he's still basically a league average pitcher and that's nothing to shake a stick at, if you are in to shaking sticks at things.  It looks like the Cardinals got steal with him when he signed the one year deal.

Edinson Volquez is still trying to become the Reds first 17-game winner since Pete Schourek won 18 games in 1995.  He'll also be the youngest 17-game winner for the Reds since Don Gullett won 17 games in 1974 at the age of 23.  He remains 8 strikeouts away from becoming just the 8th different Reds pitcher to strike out 200 in a season and the youngest since Gary Nolan struck out 206 as a 19-year old rookie in 1967.

We've got milestones to go before we sleep!

Obligatory Brandon/Brendan soccer post of the night

The second most successful sports team in Ohio this year (right behind the Xavier Musketeers), the Columbus Crew are playing a nationally televised game on ESPN2. They’re down 1-0 right now, but they’re without their best player. They’re at Crew Stadium, so expect a wild one to play out.

Not actually a baseball game going on.

by Brendanukkah on Sep 18, 2008 8:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It was a metaphor

But there was a baseball game going on.

See, they were parking by the lake with not another car in sight. And making out in the car, while listening to a baseball game.

I know, this sounds strange by modern standards. But the song was written back in the early ’70s, when most cars only had radios. Nobody had CD players or iPods. Some really cool guys had 8-tracks, and could romance their sweeties with The Best of Air Supply, but Meat Loaf and his date were stuck with whatever was on the radio. Which was a baseball game.

by jch24 on Sep 19, 2008 9:07 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

My dad

had an extensive collection of 8-track tapes. He finally was forced to buy a new stereo system recently, and was bummed to find out that 8-track players are now unavailable

He made a lot of his 8-tracks himself. There was this loud clunk right in the middle of the song when it changed tracks. Commercial tapes just faded the song out and back in again around the clunk. Dad timed all the songs and arranged them on the tape so the clunk was between songs. He spent hours at this, according to my mom.

He had a cassette deck. And even a CD player. He jogs 5 miles a day, and so had a Walkman, then a portable CD player, and now several MP3 players.

But he was very fond of his 8-tracks, even in the age of the iPod. Probably because he spent so much time making them.

That one came out in February/March of senior year

and was then continually alternated with Goddammit! and and the self titled compilation of LPs that was also released around that time. Those are three of the best things to come out of the late 90s.

Infirmary was the beginning of the end in my opinion. The Skiba/Kevin Seconds split was a brief return to the glory days (bought that one off the Asian Man, Mike Park himself, at warp tour in NYC one summer) but since then it has all been a bit overproduced and lyrically challenged.

That and I am getting older.

Okay: so you’re poorly groomed, she’s wearing a mini-skirt (of course), and you propose that you actually skipped stones on a river by a railroad track. How trope-ish of you to cite all of that campy rural imagery in a single verse! Live like you were dying! Oh, only if Tim McGraw. You and the entire industry cranking out music that tells people exactly what they want to hear about themselves and their lives.

But only one of them is going to be healthy at a time. And as John Hurt says, why have one when you can have two for twice the price?

Back from the lanes. My team the Morose Comets won all 4.

FYI: I don’t own a bar, but my 28 year old daughter runs O’Bryon’s Irish Pub in O’Bryonville (fancy that). This daughter is extremely cute and well, nicely put together. Alas young mens she’s married…but Daughter #2 (Organic Chemistry Scientist) has a BF but still looking fine at 25 could be persuaded to stop by if we had a get together. Daughter # 3, 20 Jr. at OSU (I think she’s studying medical engineering and food sciences) is also not too hard on the eyes, plus she is very funny…maybe we could get her to stop over…

I am in and out of town all weekend but I’ll talk to #1 and see if we can’t put together a season ending get together with some extra discounts for RR’s. I’ll put up a date or two by Monday.

You’ll know me..I’ll be the weird old guy asleep at the end of the bar.

You know,

we’re just giving crap about daughters, right? Who am I talking too, of course you know.

RR’s have never asked for a discount in their lives. We just go to the bathroom and remember we needed something outside…

Daughters or not, I swear I’m going to regulate everyone’s booze intake so there are no early flame-outs. Last time, ‘than had 92 drinks on an empty stomach and was inconsolable. Time before that, I spent 2 hours in Ash’s car trying not to throw up after doing the same thing. Time before that, obc was falling out of barstools. Time before that….. I can’t remember back that far, but something happened.
