Game 152: Reds vs Cardinals
St. Louis Cardinals @ Cincinnati Reds
|
|
|
Did you know that Kyle Lohse used to pitch for the Reds and his performance for the Reds wasn't quite as good as it has been this season? Blah blah blah. Lohse is not a bad pitcher, despite what many in Cincinnati seem to think. He's not great, and he's probably performing at his peak this season, but he's still basically a league average pitcher and that's nothing to shake a stick at, if you are in to shaking sticks at things. It looks like the Cardinals got steal with him when he signed the one year deal.
Edinson Volquez is still trying to become the Reds first 17-game winner since Pete Schourek won 18 games in 1995. He'll also be the youngest 17-game winner for the Reds since Don Gullett won 17 games in 1974 at the age of 23. He remains 8 strikeouts away from becoming just the 8th different Reds pitcher to strike out 200 in a season and the youngest since Gary Nolan struck out 206 as a 19-year old rookie in 1967.
We've got milestones to go before we sleep!

Meanwhile Wilkon’s on the bench and Bako’s in again…And really, as long as Dusty’s daughter Natasha is happy we’ll be seeing Corey.

Obligatory Brandon/Brendan soccer post of the night
The second most successful sports team in Ohio this year (right behind the Xavier Musketeers), the Columbus Crew are playing a nationally televised game on ESPN2. They’re down 1-0 right now, but they’re without their best player. They’re at Crew Stadium, so expect a wild one to play out.

It was a metaphor
But there was a baseball game going on.
See, they were parking by the lake with not another car in sight. And making out in the car, while listening to a baseball game.
I know, this sounds strange by modern standards. But the song was written back in the early ’70s, when most cars only had radios. Nobody had CD players or iPods. Some really cool guys had 8-tracks, and could romance their sweeties with The Best of Air Supply, but Meat Loaf and his date were stuck with whatever was on the radio. Which was a baseball game.

My dad
had an extensive collection of 8-track tapes. He finally was forced to buy a new stereo system recently, and was bummed to find out that 8-track players are now unavailable
He made a lot of his 8-tracks himself. There was this loud clunk right in the middle of the song when it changed tracks. Commercial tapes just faded the song out and back in again around the clunk. Dad timed all the songs and arranged them on the tape so the clunk was between songs. He spent hours at this, according to my mom.

He had a cassette deck. And even a CD player. He jogs 5 miles a day, and so had a Walkman, then a portable CD player, and now several MP3 players.
But he was very fond of his 8-tracks, even in the age of the iPod. Probably because he spent so much time making them.
