Game 151: Reds vs Cardinals
St. Louis Cardinals at Cincinnati Reds, Sep 17, 2008 7:10 PM EDT

Want to know how stupid pitcher wins are as a stat? Aaron Harang has allowed 3 runs or fewer in 16 starts this season. In those games his record is 3-8. The Reds won the other 5 games in which he didn't get a decision. That's some bad luck.
That's been a big part of the story on Harang's season. The offense has scored more than 4 runs in a Harang start just 4 times this season. Yes, he had a 10-game stretch when he was a likely injured where he pitched terribly, but even when he has pitched well, the offense has let him down. Don't let that record fool you too much. If he's healthy, Harang will still be the Reds ace next season.
Wellemeyer appears to be another benefactor of the Pitcher Witch, Dave Duncan. For all of the accolades that Leo Mazzone has heaped on him, it seems to me like Dave Duncan has had more success with marginal pitchers than any coach in baseball. I have no study to back that up, just my gut.
The Reds need 4 more wins to top last season's total. Whoopee!

I think it's breaking Jeter's heart
This will be the first time the Yanks didn’t make the post-season since he came up. And he has a keen sense of history. I think it really bothers him, because this will be the last season for the old Yankee Stadium. He didn’t want it to end this way.
The kids, they’re not so bothered. They have their whole futures in front of them. But Jeter…he’s reached the age where he knows it won’t last forever.

Now that's the year that broke my heart
I’m not greedy. I don’t expect the Yanks to win the WS every year. But I really wanted them to win in 2001. For the first time since I started seriously following baseball, America was rooting for the Yankees.
Probably half of NYC are people who moved there from somewhere else, and many of them hated the Yankees. But that year, many of them became true New Yorkers, embraced the city, and started rooting for the Bronx Bombers, instead of against them. There was even a truce between Mets fans and Yanks fans.
That was the year I really wanted the Yankees to win. Baseball will break your heart every time.

2001
I and most of my friends greatly resented the insistence that all Americans needed to root for the Yankees in those playoffs. The very essence of sports was superseded for narrative convenience. Our dorm’s TV lounge was greatly divided (or at least it was when Mariano took the mound in game 7 when most of the Yankee “fans” bothered to show up).

I never noticed
any insistence that all Americans needed to root for the Yankees.
There were just a lot more people rooting for them than usual.
I, of course, happened to visiting a houseful of Yankee haters at the time. Which only added to the pain, since they were soooo happy to see the Yankees lose.

I'm still shocked by the one a few weeks ago
about who was more likely to hit 25 HRs: Edwin, Votto, Bruce, B. Phillips.
EdE was 4th in voting even though he had the most HRs of the 4 and had a substantial lead over Votto and Bruce with only 25 games to go.
You can’t even spot Reds fans 140 games to keep them from thinking something stupid.

Do you think Dusty will leave Harang in to go for a complete game?
Or will he realize that Harang’s arm has been an issue all year, and sending him out after he’s thrown ~110 pitches would be foolish? Or will he want to pitch Coco in the 9th, only to remember that he used him in a blowout yesterday?

Because you all care, I’m down 4 in the semifinal matchup, and he’s got Arroyo, Haren, Webb, Lincecum, and Oswalt left to pitch this week. I’ve got Cain, Oliver Perez, and Moyer (just picked him up for the 2-start week b/c Volstad was iffy . . . oops). Yeah, he’s going to kill me in a freak week where all his aces pitch twice. But my offense kicks ass compared to his, so I’m hanging in there.
