Game 149: Reds at Diamondbacks
Cincinnati Reds at Arizona Diamondbacks, Sep 14, 2008 4:10 PM EDT

Wow, what a game last night. Or not. Honestly, not only did I not watch it, but I scheduled this post early on Saturday afternoon. I'm loading up the truck today and moving into my new place on Tuesday. I'll probably be back around on Monday since I still have to, you know, work, but I'll be a little more sparse the next few days. Hopefully boobs will show up and keep you all entertained.
As you know, I'm still rooting for Johnny's #10. He won't get it today, but hopefully he'll get closer.

the Reds suck, the Bucks are abysmal, the Panthers are losing and I’m at work… Thank god for Micah Owings, and Stephen Curry!

After three quarters at PBS, the Reds are looking pretty good right now.
Holy Christ, talk about a bad sports team. They should move the team to somewhere else.

Body-more represent!
Ok, I actually kind of shit on Baltimore. But still, nice to see that something pretty came out of the city.
So my point of view is that since women (and men, to be fair) generally ate less and likely moved more, ’50s women > ’00s women. Invisibility of venereal diseases, ’50s fashion, and Audrey Hepburn only help matters. Anyone disagree with me on this?
Note: I am only here to argue 50s v. 00s. God never made anyone better than Audrey. I will not argue that.

but the crowd noise was way down at Indy’s new retractable roof stadium. Their old dome used to be the loudest place in the NFL (except maybe Seattle). Simmons didn’t think Orton could have come away from the dome on opening night with a win, and I think he actually has a point there.

Dunn at first base
Seeing Dunn perform reasonably at first base makes me think the Reds really wasted an opportunity. Not that it mattered much this year with Votto. What if Griffey had been moved to right and Dunn to first for ’06 when we missed the playoffs by 2 games?
by Red Menace on Sep 14, 2008 7:51 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Tehy tried it, remember?
It didn’t work very well.
And we keep talking about how it makes sense to try Phillips at SS . . . but it has made sense for them to try that the last three years too. And they haven’t done it. They’re not going to next year either. We’re stuck with Alex Gonzalez.
by Brian B on Sep 14, 2008 8:04 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
im not sure what went on
the unofficial word was that Dunn hated playing 1st and wouldnt do it. but everything we’ve heard out of Arizona is that he has been willing to play anywhere, including RF. i can believe that the local media may have conjured up the “Dunn hates playing 1st” thing just for smears. not to say that its true, but it sounds reasonable and thats just as bad.

Yeah, this is what's surprising
I know the Reds tried it in ST and it didn’t work, but why didn’t it work? And why are the DBacks able to make it work in the middle of a pennant race no less (although they’re quickly falling out of the race. I blame Dunn)?

Maybe it was a case of...
…a change in latitude producing a change in attitude.
He was a big fish in a small pond in Cincinnati. Maybe he felt a veteran star like himself shouldn’t have to make accommodations.
Now he’s just a rent a player, who will be looking for a job in the off-season. Like anyone at a new job, he’s trying hard to make a good impression.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
by BubbaFan on Sep 14, 2008 8:20 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
that is a logical explanation
but that kind of attitude doesnt sound anything like the Dunn we know, does it? i mean, he’s such a laid back, low-key guy, it just doesnt sound likely that he would act like a prima donna in just this one situation. i dont know, maybe so. but my heart says the Reds screwed up, as they have done so many times before.

by Charlie Scrabbles on Sep 14, 2008 9:08 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well
If what was posted in the other thread is true – he’s lazy – that could explain it. Some people are prima donnas because they have big heads. You know, the type who pitch a fit if they don’t have the biggest limo.
I doubt Dunn cares about stuff like that, but maybe he was comfortable in LF, and didn’t want to put out the effort of learning a new position. Now, he has reason to.
He’s not playing if he doesn’t switch positions.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
by BubbaFan on Sep 14, 2008 9:21 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
interesting point
but i think it is just as likely that the Reds saw Dunn misplay a few balls at 1st in spring training and declared it a bust. as Brain B said upthread, we’ve had a shortstop problem for some time and a bona fide shortstop playing 2B the whole time.
Jr did end up moving to RF, but it was likely 2-3 years overdue when it finally happened. they also had him bat 3rd for 2/3 of a season when he obviously had no business doing so. they’ve also killed Homer’s curveball (arguably his best pitch) and made Keppinger their primary shortstop for an entire freaking season.
some of these decisions have been made by past regimes, but none have given me any reason to believe they have a firm grasp of the strengths and weaknesses of their personnel. perhaps it was Dunn’s unwillingness to change that precipitated all this, but if i were betting man (im not), i would say the Reds just dont know what they are doing. and they havent for quite some time.
"for integrity of races and the game" - Dusty Baker
by Charlie Scrabbles on Sep 14, 2008 9:37 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well
We’ll probably find out. If Dunn wins a GG at 1B next year, we’ll know the Reds blew it. If he sucks at 1B and is put back in LF, well, maybe the Reds aren’t totally clueless.
And on a totally unrelated topic…holy crap, did you see what’s going on with Lehman? Everyone on Wall St. is running around like a chicken with his head cut off. Lehman is expected to declare bankruptcy tonight (no bailout for them). All the traders were called in to work today to try and prepare. Tomorrow’s expected to be a madhouse in the financial markets.

Hah
The fundamentals of the economy look scarily like right before the Great Depression. Pity whoever wins the election. He’ll get the blame, fairly or not.
This debt binge goes back at least to the dot-com boom, so both political parties had a hand in it. Yesterday, Greenspan called this a ‘once-in-a-century’ crisis. (Never mind that he’s a big reason it happened.)
Greenspan told ABC’s “This Week” that the situation “is in the process of outstripping anything I’ve seen, and it still is not resolved and it still has a way to go.”
“Indeed, it will continue to be a corrosive force until the price of homes in the United States stabilizes,” Greenspan said.
Translation: until home prices across the nation fall enough so that ordinary working people can actually afford them. Possibly for cash on the barrelhead.

Brewers continue to nosedive
After losing the first two games at Philly, the Brewers couldn’t protect a two-run lead in the afternoon game against Joe Blanton and are losing 6-0 in the night game. If that holds they’ll be tied with Philly in the WC. Chicago has the division wrapped up.

And the Cubs are playing in their stadium tonight.
That’s insulting.

good thinking
maybe the Dbacks can sweep them in the 1st round. again. because Adam Dunn will hit 5 home runs at Wrigley.

youre probably right
but the Buckeyes just got crucified, the Reds have been dead for months, the Bengals look like the Bungles, and LeBron is going to move to New York. Adam Dunn beating the Cubs is really all i have to hope for right now, so if you dont mind…

tough times indeed
im also rooting for the Indians to move their AAA squad here this winter. it makes too much sense for it not to work, right? the Nats contract is up, and they can take their team to Richmond, where the Braves are vacating for a new stadium in Georgia. the Indians contract with Buffalo is up, so they should move in to the new stadium opening here. i would definitely go to more games if it were the Indians AAA team here in town.

We’re five wins away from having a better record than last season! And we owe it all to Dusty and CoPat!
