The Wagon vs. The Unit.  I was surprised to see Johnson's numbers look as good as they do.  I thought he was washed up.  Guess I was wrong.

I'd like to see the Reds win tonight, but I'd also like to see the DBacks make the playoffs.  So, I declare that both shall happen!

Oh, the horror

Global warming could cost Ohio its buckeyes

It’s not the best-researched global-warming theory, but it could be the most horrifying to certain fans of college football: Environmentalists said Friday that climate change might push the growing range of Ohio’s iconic buckeye tree out of the state, leaving it for archrival Michigan.

Awesome news

I wonder if Ohio A&M will change their mascot if the Buckeye migrates north. No worries, Bobcats are better to retain than trees that bear worthless nuts.

(This story cracked me up. Directly after I heard this earlier today there was a report that 24% of married people sleep in different beds. Re he eally? Im not buying that one….)

As opposed to...

…athletes that bare worthless nuts?

And bobcats…they’re benefiting from the mortgage crisis in California, moving into foreclosed homes.

I’m kind of surprised they’re that bold. Around here anyway, bobcats are so shy you never see them. There are supposedly quite a few around, but people never see them.

A right handed power hitter

A catcher that can hit, catch and throw runners out
a one way plane ticket for Corey Patterson.

I don’t like it, either. It’s really too far to drive. And flying is such a pain these days.

I really wonder if they are making a mistake. Airlines are dropping like flies, due to high fuel prices. Something like 100,000 Brits were stranded when a British airline went under today, and the CEO of British Airways said he expects 30 more airlines to fail before Christmas. The days of casual air travel may be coming to an end.

Help is on the Way!!

http://www.space.com/businesstechnology/080912-solarpower-beam-test.html

WASHINGTON — A former NASA scientist has used radio waves to transmit solar power a distance of 92 miles (148 km) between two Hawaiian islands, an achievement that he says proves the technology exists to beam solar power from satellites back to Earth.

John C. Mankins demonstrated the solar power transmission for the Discovery Channel, which paid for the four month experiment and will broadcast the results Friday at 9 p.m. EDT. His vision is to transmit solar power collected by orbiting satellites as large as 1,102 pounds (500 kg) to lake-sized receiver stations on Earth.

Mankins, who worked at NASA for 25 years and managed the agency’s space-based solar program before it was disbanded, transmitted 20 watts of power between the two islands in May. The receivers, however, were so small that less than one one-thousandth of a percent of the power was received, Mankins said.

The experiment cost about $1 million, and Mankins said larger arrays could be constructed with more money.

Each of the nine solar panels used was built to transmit about 20 watts of power, but the transmission was scaled back to two watts per panel in order to obtain U.S. Federal Aviation Administration approval for the test.

Despite the miniscule reception on the receiving end, Mankins said the ground-based test proved it is possible to transmit solar power through the atmosphere.

“The test was in no way fully successful,” he said. “I think it showed it is possible to transmit solar power quickly and affordably.”

what the take will be on football 100 or 200 years hence. It could be seen as a pretty unforgivable “sport.”

But I have a suspicion that the game has gotten somehow safer over time. I wonder what the death/serious injury figures are compared to the number of people playing organized football.

That was a terrible sentence

What I meant was, I wonder if there are fewer serious injuries today then say 30 years ago — when adjusted for increase in popularity.

It’s probably an impossible task to know for sure; there are just too many variables and too little information.

But it strikes me as one of those situations that turn out to be counterintuitive. The easy thing to say is “the speed and size of the game have lead to more and more serious injuries.” I could just see the opposite being true.

Or not.

Another literary loss...another Red's fan gone

CLAREMONT, Calif. – David Foster Wallace, the author best known for his 1996 novel “Infinite Jest,” was found dead in his home, according to police. He was 46.
Wallace’s wife found her husband had hanged himself when she returned home about 9:30 p.m. Friday, said Jackie Morales, a records clerk with the Claremont Police Department.

Wallace taught creative writing and English at nearby Pomona College.

This is what happens to intellectual Red’s Fans…

1st time I've watched SNL in maybe a couple - three years...

The guy who did the Political Comedian role on weekend update was pretty funny
Tin as General Palin (she commands the Alaskan Nat’l guard, damn it) was exceptional. I can only hope that she’ll continue this character because She nailed it.

And what about Micah Ownings ? Is he so great a pitcher that one wouldn’t consider him as a position player?

Well, now I’ve got a serious crush on Tina Fey…what? Oh Mrs. Mads is callig…hope she’s dressed in the Cowgirl thingy tonight…Comin’ dear
