Game 147: Reds at Diamondbacks

Cincinnati Reds @ Arizona Diamondbacks

Next Game

Cincinnati Reds
@ Arizona Diamondbacks

Friday, Sep 12, 2008, 9:40 PM EDT
Chase Field

Johnny Cueto Aaron Harang vs Brandon Webb

Clear. Winds blowing in from left field at 5-10 m.p.h. Game Time temperature: Around 95.

Complete Coverage >

W-L ERA WHIP K BB
2008 - Johnny Cueto 8-13 4.77 1.37 149 59

W-L ERA WHIP K BB
2008 - Brandon Webb 19-7 3.41 1.20 166 57

The Reds seem to be catching these division front runners all while they are on a downswing.  The Diamondbacks have lost 6 in a row and have just 3 wins in their last 16 games.  Similarly, Webb has been struggling as well.  In his last three starts, he's pitched only 13.2 innings and has a 12.51 ERA.

Johnny Cueto pitched okay in his last start, but didn't get any help from the bullpen and the Reds lost 14-9.  He has a 3.73 ERA since the start of August, but an injury and a general inability to pitch deep into games has left him with just a 1-3 record in that span.  He still needs 2 wins to reach double digits on the season.

Aaron Harang is the starter tonight, not Cueto.

Other than that, I can't think of any storylines for this game.  Can you?

Let’s get ’er Dunn!

Interesting lineup

Dickerson, lf
Richar, ss
Votto, 1b
Encarnacion, 3b
Bruce, rf
Castillo, 2b
Patterson, cf
Bako, c
Harang, rhp

Looks “good” 1-6, but then… I guess I should be satisfied that both Wilkin and Richar are getting to play at the same time. I wonder if Rosales could play LF?

Can't complain about 1-6

especially those of us who wanted to see the young’uns

why has Castillo not played catcher yet?

seems odd to me.

Yep can't complain...but I will anyway

There is no reason for Bako to be in this line up period.
Can’t Wilkin Castilto (whatever) catch ..then we could have Rosales get a start – or why not Hannigan and Rosales?
I understand that with Donkey on the other team we’ll need fast OFs.

Charlie – I’ve responded to your trade – here it is agin
AFTER this Sun.
I’ll trade TJ for EJ.

Wilkin Castillo is on a mission to play every position outside of pitcher before the season ends

He’s Freel w/ less scrappiness and more ability (I hope)

woah

Cowboy just compared Dunn to Patterson. and my cat just spontaneously combusted.

The comparison

better have been ‘they both played in the outfield for the Reds this year and were born in this country’…… sorry to hear about your cat.

he was saying

how they were both players that suffered from unrealistic expectations. people expected Dunn to be a run producer and people expected Patterson to be a leadoff hitter. in a weird, Cowboy sorta logic it kinda works, but it still burned my cat pretty bad. but he’s a tough guy. he’ll be alright. thanks for your concern though.

"for integrity of races and the game" - Dusty Baker

by Charlie Scrabbles on Sep 12, 2008 9:22 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

See that's the problem though

Only Dusty expected Patterson to be a productive leadoff hitter. Anyone else with half a brain has been wondering all season why Patterson led off even once. So the analogy sucks.

I think

it was more of a ‘7 years ago people expected Patterson to be a good leadoff hitter’ and ‘7 years ago people expected Dunn to turn into a .280/..400/.575 type of player’. Neither guy turned into what was expected of them.

although he didnt meet certain expectations, turned into a very high-quality ballplayer. the other is barely capable of playing baseball on sega genesis.

my 9/20 ideal lineup

1) Castillo C
2) EE 1B
3) Votto LF
4) Bruce RF
5) Stubbs CF
6) Patterson SS
7) Arroyo 2B
8) Owings 3B
9) Danny Serafina P

I’d pay $37 for a ticket to that game!

by obc2 on Sep 12, 2008 10:07 PM EDT   0 recs

Pretty innovative.

Two decent pitchers in that lineup, neither of which are batting 9th and neither of which are pitching. You may be on to something here…

The Rockies designated for assignment

today a pitcher the Reds should make every effort to acquire. Pedro Strop, 23, RHP. Could be a future closer. Has a 92-93 mph fastball, an impressive slider and a strong split. I’m amazed Colorado DFAd him when they activated Todd Helton.

Baseball America rated Strop, a former SS, as the Rockies’ No. 9 prospect after last season. The kid has a good, live arm. I’d love to see the Reds acquire him.

Carry on.

I don't think I missed it above

but what happened to Cueto?

by bengalred on Sep 12, 2008 10:20 PM EDT   0 recs

I think it was a mistake on SBN and my part

I think Cueto is actually supposed to start on Sunday. SBN’s game preview module listed him as the starter and I didn’t double-check because they are usually right.
