Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Wednesday evening open thread

Question 1 of the night: Do these wins the last week mean anything to you in regards to next season?  Are you any more confident about next year?

Question 2 of the night: Is it more important to you to see the Reds win or to see the Reds play young players who might have an impact on the future (note: these are not mutually exclusive)?

Question 3 of the night: Are there any new TV shows this fall that you are looking forward to?  What show am I not watching that I should be watching (note: My show list right now is pretty much The Office, 30 Rock, Lost, and Chuck, with an occasional Prison Break)?

Sub-question: is it in fact unfair to criticize a formerly great artist for his latter day sins, is it better to burn out or fade away?

Any other questions?

Phillips will have surgery

From CTR:

2B Brandon Phillips on Friday will have surgery during which a pin will be inserted into his right index finger so that it heals properly.

Phillips suffered the broken finger in last night’s game at Milwaukee when he was hit by a pitch on a bunt attempt. He was examined today in Cincinnati by Reds medical director Dr. Timothy Kremchek.

The surgery will be performed by Kremchek and hand specialist Dr. Andrew Markewicz.

Phillips will not play again the rest of this season.

Question #2

what about watching the Reds lose because they continue to use their veterans?

The curious case of David Weathers. How is it that he can do what he did today repeatedly, and yet his era NEVER goes up?

He paind his pitcher's witch dues up front

These wins have meant a lot to me. It shows that the young core of this team is very talented. And they all have high upsides.Despite the talent, I can’t get too excited about 09 ‘cause Dusty is sooooo bad, the coaches don’t seem to do much to help the guys improve, Walt and Bob really don’t seem to have any kind of understandable plan and did i mention dusty Baker and Fucking Clownboy.

I don’t think that this team will lose any more games by playing the young guys. they have drive and verve and are excited and want to prove themselves. I don’t mind an occasional Bako sighting…but no more Hobart, please and Kepp could take a 2 or 3 week break too

My fav TV shows are:

Did anyone else see this from Dustbag?

From mlb.com:
“We had a real short bullpen today, especially with guys with experience,” Baker said. “I had a bunch of ’no’s’ on my lineup card.”

Yeah, thats right. He isn’t going to play these guys at all.

we all remember what it was like under Jerry Narron right?

i remember the frustration and the anger so vividly. but it was nothing like this. this is so much worse. maybe because i feel like this team could actually go somewhere now and under Jerry it didnt really make much of a difference. i dont know exactly why, but im so much angrier with Dusty than i ever was with Jerry.

What does that mean?

I assume the “no’s” are because they’re already overused or injured.

Are the kids on innings count or something?

by BubbaFan on Sep 11, 2008 7:03 AM EDT up reply actions

i assume his logic is this:

“for the integrity of races and the game”, he must field his best team against these Brewers. therefore, only players that were on the roster before callups, those with experience, can play. so all the rookies are automatically "NO"s. that also goes for the guys who have pitched too much lately, like Burton. in summary, Dusty is a butt.

"for integrity of races and the game" - Dusty Baker

by Charlie Scrabbles on Sep 11, 2008 7:42 AM EDT up reply actions

I kinda doubt that

He said “especially guys with experience,” which suggests a lot of rookies were not no’s.

That is annoying enough, of course. But I can’t blame him for wanting to beat CC. It was the cover story on MLB.com for awhile: “Sabathia’s first loss as a Brewer?” Nope. Sigh.

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

by BubbaFan on Sep 11, 2008 7:53 AM EDT up reply actions

i took it as the other way

“we had alot of "no’s” in the bullpen" means that the young inexperienced guys had to be no’s. how could the bullpen be short with 4 otherwise fresh arms? why would Weathers pitch again for the third straight day if Roenicke were available? i dont think its pitch counts because they are relievers and they just havent thrown that many innings this year.

"for integrity of races and the game" - Dusty Baker

by Charlie Scrabbles on Sep 11, 2008 8:04 AM EDT up reply actions

Agree

Consecutive day reliever usage has been one of Dusty’s weaknesses this year. It’s affected Cordero and may have contributed to Burton going on the DL. You can certainly question the prudence of throwing Weathers out there for the third game in a row after rosters have expanded.

by ken on Sep 11, 2008 8:08 AM EDT up reply actions

I assume this is a cleaned up version of a soundbyte

so it would be tough to know what Dusty actually meant. Is it more clear in the from MLB?

The expression that the modifying clause “especially…” is supposed to provide to the “shortness” of the Reds’ bullpen isn’t at all clear. I think you could reasonably take it either way.

Scrabbles, Dirt et al: The “shortness” of the Reds bullpen was due to the new players already having “no’s” by their names.

BubbaFan: The shortness of the Reds bullpen was due to experienced players being used up and therefore “no’s.”

Read in a vacuum, I would tend towards BF’s reading; considering what Dusty actually did…..

Slyde, did you catch up on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia? A new season starts Sept 18.

Also Mad Men, Mad Men, Mad Men!

by Red Menace on Sep 10, 2008 8:29 PM EDT reply actions

I bought the first season of Sunny on iTunes and then foolishly wiped my drive clean thinking it was somewhere else

I’m terrible about catching up on shows too. The only show that I’ve ever caught up on was Veronica Mars and the first season was the best, so I basically caught up for nothing.

I want to get into Mad Men, but I never watch AMC so I never know when it’s on, and now I feel like I need to catch up. That’s the same problem with Sunny. I just haven’t caught on to the cable television fad.

I noticed all your picks were network shows. You’re living in the past, man!

Don’t worry about catching up with Sunny. Each episode more or less stands on it’s own. And I’ll second TheC’s call of hulu.com. It’s a great legal place to watch shows for free.

I looked at hulu a while back for mad men

but they didn’t have full episodes of it for season 1. I think maybe I’ll rent & rip the dvds (or check the library). I don’t think I have anything on my Wednesday night schedule, so I’ll call that Mad Men night.

As for Sunny, I remembered this morning that I had watched a couple of episodes during their broadcast and my wife didn’t find them particularly funny. That might be a harder sell. It may just have to go into the DVR for watching when she’s busy.

I'll second Menace's recommendation of Mad Men

I haven’t been this engrossed in a show since The Wire‘s fourth season. It’s a bit of a soap opera but with very compelling characters and rich story lines. It’s on Sundays at 10 and 11. It would be helpful to catch up but the plot isn’t as demanding as The Wire, where you’d be completely lost without the background of all prior episodes.

Anyone else disappointed in the new 90210? A poor man’s OC so far.

Haven't seen Mad Men, but I'll echo It's Always Sunny

That might be my favorite show right now. Oh, and of course a new season of Real World/Road Rules Challenge started. No teams, just everybody stranded on an island. They have to get to another island where $300,000 of treasure is. They keep stressing that there are no challenges, and yet they showed a lot of things that looked like challenges, and the word “Challenge” is in the name of the show. I love it.

ratings

I just remember an interview with Trey Parker and Matt Stone where they said they consider the first Wednesday night showing of a new South Park to be a commercial for the DVD to come. When they started the show the ratings on Wednesday night were everything, but Comedy Central could care less now. I would think HBO, not selling any commercial time, would be even more in that camp.

For the last season of The Wire the ratings nosedived (from their already low cruising altitude) because the new ep was available on demand throughout the week. I don’t know if the same thing is in effect for Entourage. Plus there was the first week of the NFL season and everyone is probably down of Vinny Chase after Medellin bombed.

I like HIMYM, too, and Alyson is a cutie.

Two and a Half Men makes me consistently laugh out loud. It’s as close to our old newsroom humor as anything I’ve seen. I like Dexter. I’m a warped fan of the Red Green Show reruns on PBS.

As for the Reds, I’m less confident about next year than I’ve ever been. That’s astonishing considering the young talent this franchise has. I just don’t see anyone who knows how to use and develop such talent at the MLB level. In fact, I’m very concerned that the offseason will result in the trading of many of the youngsters for a bunch of middling and over the hill veterans in a failed attempt to win now.

I’d love to see the young guys play, whether the Reds win down the stretch or not. Finishing fifth isn’t anything more to crow about than finishing sixth. If the record is worse, then the draft position is higher.

Oh, and to answer the questions:

1) No. These wins are doing nothing more than screwing up draft position. I’m pretty confident the Cubs and Brewers are gonna make it, so the spoiler angle is overrated IMHO.

2) I want to see the young guys, no questions asked. Too bad I won’t get what I want because the manager’s a fucking idiot.

3) I don’t watch a lot of TV outside of sports and cartoons so I’m not the guy to ask.

The children were showing

demented tendencies like Dexter in book three, right? (It’s been a while since I read it, and I read a lot). That whole thing doesn’t really work for me because, while they both had some traumas in their childhood, their traumas shouldn’t make them anything at all like Dexter. His trauma was much greater and much more likely to screw him up.

Overall, I think the TV series surpasses the books, which is hard to do.

The questions...

1. No. Be not fooled. It’s a small sample size. The winning is due in part to players who probably won’t be back next year. (Corey Patterson, this means you.) And teams often play better when all is lost, tricking the fans and even the management into thinking they’re better than they are. (The Pirates do that about every year.)

2. I’m just happy to see Andy Phillips get a chance to play. He’s such a nice guy and he’s been through so much. And he’s got a family to support (first baby due this month).

At this point, there’s probably no reason to use veteran players you are planning to keep. But giving the kids some big league experience is fine, and so is playing the guys you’re trying to shop, and the guys you’re wondering if you should keep.

Though I guess if I actually bought a ticket to a game, I’d be disappointed if the stars weren’t playing.

3. No. I don’t watch much TV, aside from sports and news.

I do watch “Ghost Hunters” when there’s no baseball game and I’m not doing something else. Still wondering why Brian mysteriously disappeared from Ghost Hunters International. No explanation, he’s just gone.

I get the feeling he’s kind of the Manny Ramirez of ghost hunters. The fans like him, he’s found some good “evidence,” but he’s kinda flaky.

He had some personal problems when he was on Ghost Hunters a few different times that led to issues and eventually his leaving for an extended period of time before returning. I don’t want to speculate, but it seems like the guy isn’t the most stable in his personal life so it wouldn’t surprise me if its something like that.

Answers

1. No. Slapping around the Flubs is always nice to see, though.

2. There is no good reason to play Bako, Cabrera, Keppinger, A. Phillips, Valentin or Patterson. None. None are going to win any games for the team this year, and none should be part of the team next year. I wouldn’t play Hairston, either (though some might disagree). Which leaves 27 year old Ryan Hanigan as the oldest position player who should get any at bats other than as a pinch hitter, and I’d be OK with that.

3. I only make time for 3 weekly series: 24 (which won’t restart until after the Super Bowl), Eureka (which I miss now that pool season has started), and Robin Hood (season ended a month ago). I also watch Pushing Daisies if I think of it. So I guess the short answers are “No, there are no shows I’m anticipating this fall” and “Yes, you should watch all of the shows I watch and skip all of the others”.

4. Not only is it not unfair, most artists should be vilified for their poor late work because it’s all too often simply about money (I’m looking at you, Rolling Stones and (though it’s been so long since he’s done anything at all worth while) especially Rod Stewart).

Which sharply contrasts with artists who keep the creative juices flowing – Joe Strummer (until he died) and Bob Dylan stand out as two who refused to fade away at ages well past when they should have.

Often wrong, never uncertain.

Also, Cuba will be playing another qualifying match here in DC (tickets are on me if any Red Reporters want to come!). What’s the over/under on number of players who will defect? I’m starting the line at 4.5.

ummm, yes. That is 10 kinds of awesome

And reminds me of my two favorite questions from work this week:
1) “Can I study abroad in Cuba?” (Answer: “Only if you don’t tell anyone in a position of power)
2) "Will I be able to travel freely when I study abroad?” (Answer: Unless you decide to go to Turkmenistan or North Korea)

Let me know when Cuba comes to town. This opportunity intrigues me…

i don't know if you know this, since you are kinda new

but I am a student at Ohio Northern University and we can actually legally study abroad in Cuba. ONU has a liscense from the US Treasury that allows us to send students to Havana, provided they are full time ONU students, and spend at least ten weeks in Havana, and are full time students in Cuba.

You should totally enrol in ONU for Spring of 2008-2009, and register to go to Havana.

1. Obama. McCain’s ridiculous choice of Palin, who I think is an insult to everyone in the country with an IQ over 80, totally disqualifies him as valid choice. To put that joke of a candidate potentially a heartbeat away from the presidency is scary, especially when you consider the chances of McCain not living through one term.

You know what's funny

I think these two candidates are the best pair of candidates I’ve ever had to choose between. Granted, it’s only my 4th chance to vote, but I think this is the first time I’ve felt like I wasn’t either choosing the lesser of two evils or voting for one guy just because I didn’t like the other.

What I think the real problem is in this election is the political system that has been established. I think both sides are succumbing to the pressure of appealing to their base. A truly great person is never going to be elected in this day and age just by being truly great. Everyone has flaws and the nature of politics today is such that you’ll have more success emphasizing your opponents flaws than trying to sell your own positive qualities. The idea is to create soundbytes that resonate and get play on the 24-hour news networks. Unfortunately, that leads even honorable men to turn into attack dogs.

by Brendanukkah on Sep 11, 2008 9:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes

From the Wikipedia:

If a player is on the 40-man roster but not on the active major league roster, he is said to be on optional assignment—his organization may freely move him between the major league club and the minor league club. If a player is on the 40-man roster and not the active 25 man roster for any part of more than three seasons, he is out of options and may not be assigned to the minors without first clearing waivers. However, if a player has less than 5 years of professional experience, he may be optioned to the minors in a fourth season without being subject to waivers. If a major league player is ineligible for free agency and “has options” remaining, his team may option him to a minor league team without consequence.

So, since he won’t have 5 years in professional baseball, he doesn’t have to be on the 25 man roster until his 5th year. That’s what happened with Wily Mo when he was here.

Often wrong, never uncertain.

Technically, I do not think that one is supposed to begin a sentence with a conjunction. But everyone does it.

Technically, it's perfectly acceptable to begin a sentence with a coordinating conjunction

if it introduces an independent clause.

Stylistically, some teachers prefer new writers to avoid it for fear that they will begin writing in fragments.

Just as they might blanche at our use of “technically” as a adverbial modifier so far removed from the main verb.

I had an interesting conversation once

regarding the insertion of fucking into polysyllable words. There seems to be agreed upon norms. For instance absofuckinglutely is commonly heard, but you never come across other possibilities (abfuckingsolutely, absolutefuckingly). I remember we were very close to stumbling upon some set of rules that govern the process, but we were also pretty drunk.

by Red Menace on Sep 12, 2008 11:09 PM EDT up reply actions

I prefer the insertion of muthafucker

or smurfly. They are simultaneously more tender, disarming and cute in a very stupid way. AbsoMuthafuckingSmurfly is just pristine.

by Pops Daniels on Sep 13, 2008 9:22 AM EDT up reply actions

Might it have something to with metrics?

With the example you provided, this is how I would mark out their stress patterns:

“abfuckingsolutely”: ab FUCK ing so LUTE ly

“absofuckinglutely”: AB so FUCK ing LUTE ly

Both have feminine endings, but the latter appears to be 3 strict trochaic feet, which underscores the forcefulness of the expression.

As for the former, it doesn’t really give us anything our language likes. I would mark it out as an iamb followed by a pyrrhic and then a trochee. Blech.

PS: "absolutefuckingly"

ab so LUTE FUCK ing ly

I actually like this one and will now use it all the time. If you don’t stress the first syllable, you get an anapest followed by a dactyl, which gives the nice impression of a wave cresting.

A wave of filth.
