Game 146: Reds at Brewers
Cincinnati Reds at Milwaukee Brewers, Sep 10, 2008 2:05 PM EDT

Today is going to be a challenge for Dusty Baker. When you've been puttting a getaway day lineup on the field for the last week, what do you do when you have an actual getaway day? Expect Juan Castro and Neifi Perez to be acquired prior to game time.
I find myself really rooting for Arroyo right now. I'm not completely sure why, but I guess that I want to have hope for next season, and maybe if he pitches well the rest of the year it will carry over into next season. Or maybe I just like minutia like the fact that the Reds haven't had two 16-game winners since 1988 (Jackson/Browning). I mean, I know it doesn't make any difference, but when you root for shitty teams, you have to take what you can get.

rooting for Arroyo
im with you on this. hopefully he can rack up a few more wins and end up looking respectable. if there are plans to trade him this winter (im on the fence on that one) a 16-10 record looks much better than 14-12. or whatever.

Can CC win the Cy Young?
With Webb and EV faltering over the last month, does CC become part of the discussion or is it Lincecum’s to lose?
How can such a good looking man be so bad at getting to first base?

CC will get credit for the pennant race
but this isn’t Rick Sutcliffe going 16-1 in 1984, so he’ll have a slightly harder chance at it. Of course, if he goes 12-0 with an ERA under 2.00, it’ll be hard to pass him up.

I think Dusty is really trying to protect the young guys against CC Today. Only 2 lefties in the whole lineup, that has to be our lowest all year.

Also, read thru that guys game blog last night. He disses the reds and calls them one of the worst pitching staffs in baseball. Im pretty sure our bullpen is ranked 3rd in the NL, and our starters may not be CC and Sheets, but without Fogg are pretty respectable. Our problem this year has been offense and defense.

Getting closer
But can’t we have, just once, a lineup that doesn’t have Patterson, Bako OR Cabrera?
by bengalred on Sep 10, 2008 12:27 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Um, I almost advocate playing Patterson these days
He has been kind of hot lately.
…lord, I feel dirty.
by Brendanukkah on Sep 10, 2008 12:42 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
depends on what your ultimate objective is
If you want to win a few more games this year, then maybe a “hot” Patterson is the way go to.
If you want to make absolutely sure he’s not on the team next year, keep him on the bench. With each hit down the stretch, the fear that Dusty will convince Walt he’s a great bench/defensive replacement/veteran minimum guy creeps further into my brain.

hmm
Not sure how you define “hot” or lately, but starting with yesterday and going back every game from there, the best OPS I can find for Patterson is .662, starting coincidentally with the first game after Dunn was traded. Every other date range in the last 2+ months that ends with yesterday’s game gives Patterson an OPS lower than .662.

Bako is in the bottom 5 (the list of catchers is messed up for some reason so I can’t get an accurate number, but he’s definitely near the bottom.

according to MLBtraderumors
both Stormy and Affeldt should end up being type B free agents. if Walt knows what he is doing, and thats a huge IF, they both will be offered arbitration. Affledt will definitely get a long term deal somewhere, so thats a no-brainer. Stormy is an iffy case though. i would offer him arb and hope someone offers him more. but if he stays i think he’s still worth it. he hasnt been awesome, but he is definitely reliable and sturdy. and the VP helps i think. we’ll see.

I haven't checked his splits
But it seems like Weathers is pretty valuable on the road, and only really shits the bed when he’s pitching in Cinci. I do know that every time I see his ERA, I’m always surprised that it’s as low as it is.
by Brendanukkah on Sep 10, 2008 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
he's been pretty good since he came to Cincy
but this year, even though his ERA (3.19) is the lowest its been since ’03, his WHIP (1.53) is much higher than its been in the past few years. i can see him falling off next year, but if he only gets 3 mil or so i can live with it. of course, this is all hoping he rejects arb and the Nats sign him to be their closer.

From the Enquirer:
Chris Dickerson wasn’t in the lineup for the third straight night on Tuesday and probably won’t start again until Friday when the Reds face the Arizona Diamondbacks. Baker wanted to give Dickerson’s sore left achilles tendon additional rest, especially with left-hander CC Sabathia scheduled to pitch today.

I was wondering if there would have been an outcry in the Chris Young game if Yost had pulled the starters and put in Gamel, Salome, and Escobar in like the 5th inning. It was a blowout, and they could have used the experience, but people probably would have bitched that it lessened Young’s achievement, if he had gone on to throw a perfect game.

If it's included in the $5, sure
I’m not paying extra though.

Runners on the corners, no outs, a hurt Kapler
and no runs. Way to put your boot on their neck and crush their windpipe boys. Nice.

Good job by Bronson....
Will he come back for the 7th? or does Toothpicks PH for him?

Depends on whether or not we bring in Glendon Rusch

Nope, he's in to hit
And he knows CC’s weakness! Grounders to the pitcher.

Well, this reminds me....
of the time Ray Knight let the pitcher bat (can’t remember who it was) in the top of the inning…..and then put in a relief pitcher to START the next inning…..prompting me to yell from my Red Seat location….“We’ll win despite you Ray!!”

and half of them belong to Votto.

That could get interesting
A Dusty-managed pitcher versus the rental they don’t mind abusing. The starting pitchers could combine for 300 pitches in this game.
