Reds hire Bavasi... seriously

The old boy network is alive and well. This really dampens my hopes for the future. Hiring this clown? Jeez.  From Rob Butcher:

Star-divide

CINCINNATI - Cincinnati Reds President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Walt Jocketty today announced the hiring of former Anaheim Angels and Seattle Mariners general manager Bill Bavasi as a special assistant.

Bavasi, 50, will advise and assist Jocketty in matters related to the front office, Major League field and support personnel and scouting.

"We're excited Bill has joined our organization," Jocketty said. "Over his career of more than 30 years, he has worked in almost every facet of baseball operations. We will benefit from his experience and insights."

FUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCKKKKK

I hope this is all just a bad dream and I wake up in a cold sweat soon.

How can such a good looking man be so bad at getting to first base?

See this? This right here?

This does not inspire confidence.

More likely

he’s doing archival research for his dissertation: We Ain’t No Last Place Team are We Pops: Poorly Ran Baseball Teams, 1999-2012. He figures he’ll be done with it around 2014 after he gets done rocking out.

Google Results

Bill Bavasi Is an idiot = 4,490 results

Walt Jocketty is an idiot = 2,850

Wayne Krivsky is an idiot = 1,320

Just sayin’.

Wayne Krivksy also had the shortest tenure as a GM of the three listed.

this team is impossible to like

What do you mean, "blank slate"?

by boobs on Aug 8, 2008 5:16 PM EDT   0 recs

I didn't even know the M's had fired him

On the bright side, he was the Angels’ GM for much of the ‘90s. Without looking it up I would guess that he was responsible for a good chunk of their championship roster. Maybe he does fine here as a second banana.

Gold

From his Wiki page:

“Forbes Magazine ranked Bavasi 87th out of 98 General Managers of professional sports with 3 or more years of experience in 2007”.

He was the lowest ranked baseball GM. Link here

Okay

Any ranking that has Kevin McHale #1 and Billy King #3 is horribly flawed, but I stand behind my statement that Bavasi sucks.

You know how some guys

are tremendous assistant coaches but lousy head coaches? Let’s hope that’s the case here. That’s the absolute best I can take from this.

Other than Dan O'Brien, I don't know of any GM

with a less distinguished trade record than Bavasi. Reds fans will be glad to know, however, Bavasi has been involved with some names near and dear to our RR hearts. He traded for Quinton McCracken, Jason Ellison and Travis Chick, signed Jose Guillen, Rich Aurilia, Chris Reitsma and Eric Owens, and released Jolbert Cabrera.

This is a guy who traded Carlos Guillen for Juan Gone and Ramon Santiago. A guy who signed Richie Sexson and Jarrod Wasburn to four-year contracts. A guy who DFAd Greg Dobbs. A guy who signed Scott Spiezio. A guy who traded Matt Thornton for Joe Borchard. A guy who dealt Rafael Soriano for Horacio Ramirez. A guy Leather Pants conned into taking Jose Vidro and his lousy contract for a pair of minor leaguers. A guy who dealt Freddy Garcia for Miguel Olivo and a box of BP balls. This is the guy who pulled the trigger on a Bedard deal that Krivsky wouldn’t touch.

Looking at Bavasi’s trade history, I’m not sure he came out ahead on any deal. Is that possible?

by Thundering Turtle on Aug 8, 2008 6:06 PM EDT   1 recs

From his Wiki page

He also traded Asdrubal Cabrera for Eduardo Perez; Shin-Soo Choo for Ben Broussard; and Randy Winn for Jesse Foppert (and Yorvit Torrealba). Can’t count any of those as wins, either.

His track record is even worse than I thought. Most of their decent younger talent (Felix, Putz, Lopez) signed before he came aboard.

Wow

How is it that this is the first time I’ve heard his name? I read a lot of baseball stuff. I knew Ol Chuckie Lamar was gone. Obviously I knew they were doing well. But I never for the life of me could have come up with the name Andrew Friedman. Attention must be paid.

by Red Menace on Aug 13, 2008 2:05 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

The Rays new ownership

brought in a couple of investment bankers to help run the team on the business and development side before Lamar left. Once he was canned Friedman was promoted to GM. (I can’t imaging the Reds doing anything that innovative)

lamar was just an idiot

about the only good move that he made was trading victor zambrano for scott kazmir, i still cant believe that the mets made that trade

reminds me of a scene from Blackadder II

in which Blackadder has taken off for the New World with a crazy sea captain who hasn’t hired any crew at all for the ship

Blackadder: I was under the impression that it’s common maritime practice for a ship to have a crew?
Captain Rum: Opinion is divided on the subject…everyone else says it is; I say it isn’t.

It would be common baseball practice not to hire people who are competent at the jobs they are asked to perform. The Reds say that opinion is divided on the subject.

Kill me.

I now root for an organization that employs both Dusty Baker and Bill Bavasi.

I mean, at least Dusty managed some decent teams. Based on results, you could be fooled into thinking that Baker was an adequate manager. Bill Bavasi sucks. Everybody knows Bill Bavasi sucks. I mean he had a payroll of $100 million-plus, and the worst fucking record in baseball. At least when I was bitching about Krivsky, I could console myself by saying “At least we don’t employ Bill Bavasi.”

Now, we employ Bill Bavasi.

And, just to ruin your day further, consider this: Walt Jocketty is 74, and probably won’t be around much longer. Bill Bavasi is now his “Special Assistant,” and he’s 50. When Jocketty retires….....

Like I said, kill me.

Nah

In 1998 the Reds hired Bob Boone to be Special Assistant to Jim Bowden. He never became GM. You overreact.

All I’ve ever done was be Juan Pierre," he said. "I don’t know why, for some reason, they’re just sticking it to me this year."

When Jocko retires the Reds will have had 12 consecutive losing seasons

Will Reds fans ever get to see better days?

I’m not real motivated by this move, but as long as he is Jocketty’s bitch then maybe things will be alright. I’m ready to let this season slide. Jocketty has inherited a mess. He has a manager and several players on the team I’m pretty sure he doesn’t want to have around. I’m dissappointed by this season at the way the owner is making management moves, but he has the GM he wants and hopefully in the offseason Jocketty (and hopefully with the help of Bavasi) can get this team back to seeing better days.

They hired this Fucktard????

I watched this moron run the worst front office in baseball for two years (05-07) when I lived in Seattle. It was fucking painful. Not only did they suck ass at $100 million plus a year but they were thoroughly unlikable. It was easy to hate the Mariners thanks to Bavasi. All I know about his time in Anaheim is when he left, they started winning World Series. This hire is downright scary. I’d rather have Bowden back than this guy. He’s that bad. Keep this website handy and hope we don’t need it:

I'm retiring for the season

I quit. They are fucking stupid. The End. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to change my name to Duran Duran and start working on my orgasm machine.

Overserved and underwhelmed.
