How did this not get more press?
I stumbled across this quote from Dusty in an article by Hal from a couple of days ago:
Quote of the day
"I have never wanted to win more than I do right here, and I will, but this is Wayne Krivsky's team, not Walt Jocketty's and not mine. I just hope there is enough out there after the season that we can get to help us." — Baker.
This is bullshit. Is he seriously hiding behind Krivsky? "It's not my fault. I swear." What a cowardly statement.
This completely explains why the Reds are lifeless. Their manager doesn't believe in them. I mean, I'd expect athletes to be able to motivate themselves for the most part, but when the manager says, "These aren't my guys. I can't wait until I can get some better players in here." Why wouldn't you give up?
Ugh. I can't believe anybody thought he was the right manager for this team.

I agree, this is bullshit
Thowing your team under the bus? How has local sports talk not picked up on this?
Oh yeah, and I can’t wait until Dusty gets “his guys” in here. 24 more Corey Pattersons on the team really bodes well for the franchise’s future.

I feel the same way
My frustration level right now is extremely high. And I don’t blame Dusty for all of the bad play on the field, but for some reason this statement just put me over the top with him. Way to not take any accountability, Dusty.
BTW, I really liked your post in the Farmer’s Only thread. Would you be interested in going to the Enchantment Under the Sea dance with me?

Fuck you, Dusty
Your two winningest pitchers, Volquez and Arroyo, are Krivsky’s guys.
Your best relief pitchers, Bray, Burton, Cordero, Lincoln… hell, pretty much everybody but Masset, are Krivsky’s guys.
Your cleanup hitter is Krivsky’s guy.
Your shortstop and leadoff hitter is Krivsky’s guy.
Your guys are Corey Patterson, Cherry Hudson, and maybe Paul Bako. Walt Jocketty’s guy is Masset. Somehow, I feel pretty confident that you were not Krivsky’s guy. You were Bob Castellini’s guy. If Krivsky had gotten us a manager, I doubt our frustration would be nearly as high. I can’t wait til you gut the system of Krivsky’s guys in offseason, and then bring in your guys and Jocketty’s guys. My Reds fandom can take a lot, but that might be too much.

Right now
my fandom is summed up as is:
I like going to games with my dad, it reminds me of when I was a kid. My relationship with the Reds is strictly experience-based, meaning, it’s nice to see a game, but only really a one game at a time thing. I have no expectations about larger success, and I can’t really name one player on the team that I like very much at all.
It sucks, it would be fun to be a fan of a team like the Red Sox, but this is what I was born into.

Dusty is an embarrassment. He know that he is a bad fit for this team.
But chooses not to own up to it – What a small balls thing to do.
Too bad we couldn’t have thrown him in on the trade.

I still don't see how Dusty is a players manager?
Like I could honestly buy the argument that he is an acceptable manager because he keeps things togeather in the clubhouse. But as I have said before his comments have either shown that he doesn’t know his players, or at least fails to communicate. Remember when he told the press Arroyo was hurt and he wanted Arroyo to get an MRI? Than the PRESS told Arroyo about Dusty’s statements and Arroyo seemed baffled. Cueto had a bad game in New York, and Dusty said well it is probably because he has family in New York and was too amped up. He didn’t actually you know ask Cueto if he had ramily in New York, because he is Dominican and just has to have family in New York.
Like what does he do? He doesn’t seem to prepare for games, judging that he doens’t believe in stats as much as he believes in his gut. (Statiness?) He doesn’t seem to communicate well with his players. About the only thing he has done since he got here was seduce Matt Belisle.

funny thing
the teams that are not keeping things together in the clubhouse(or at least the dugout) are winning: Red Sox scuffle, Brewers, I am sure there are others. Tell me the last time you witnessed clubhouse tension from the royals, pirates, other losers. Maybe I am waaay off on that, but I would rather have a hectic clubhouse with guys who could win.

Dusty Baker is out of touch with 21st century baseball -
He needs to managing for a big money, highly talented team for his approach to the game to work.
He really just needs to go fishin’.

Is the frustration with Baker only, or Jocketty as well?
Because I don’t think Dusty is Jocketty’s guy, either. Dusty was hired in October and Jock-o wasn’t brought on until January.
Personally, after watching Jocketty operate in St. Louis for five years, I think he can make the Reds a winner.
Clearly Dusty is a disaster and has to go and I think Jocketty will do everything he can to make that happen. Given the size and length of the contract, it may take a bit longer, but there’s no way this team will progress with Baker driving blind.
Jocketty was successful in St. Louis for three reasons. 1) He could evaulate talent and knew how to construct a roster 2) He made sure everyone in the organization knew he was in charge 3) He had an intelligent manager who shared many of his ideals
He wouldn’t have come to the Reds if he didn’t think he’d be successful and he won’t be with Dusty around, making #2 and #3 impossible.
Unless I’m completely wrong about Jock-o, or Dusty suddenly decides togo along with whatever he says, eventually there’s going to be some serious disagreement. Hopefully given Castellini’s past relationship with Jock-o, he’ll show Dusty the door.

I'm stealing this from princeton at RedsZone
“This is Wayne Krivsky’s manager and not Walt Jocketty’s. I just hope there is a manager out there after the season that we can get to help us”
I’m optimistic about Jocketty, but I sure wish he had done more so far. My main concern with him is that other teams are a lot smarter than they used to be and he’s not going to be able to make the deals that he once made. We’ll see if that’s the case…unless he continues to do nothing.

I am also somewhat disappointed with the lack of movement so far
On the other hand, given this roster needs lots of new parts maybe Walt felt like he’d have more depth and breadth of option if he waits until the year is over and can evaluate the entire field.
While I think Walt’s capacity to make deadline-team-improving deals has been diminished, he’s still very good at taking junk off the heap in the offseason, getting 1-2 good years and then knowing exactly when it’s time to move on. Guys like Vina, Eckstein, Spezio, Womack (remember him!) and Matheny and pitchers like Woody Williams, Kent Bottenfield, Julian Tavarez, Steve Kline, etc. It’s amazing really, when you look back at his teams and individually you say, man, these guys were junk, but they won a lot of games.
You could argue LaRussa and Duncan had more to do with that than Jocketty, but those were Jocketty’s guys. They knew what they needed, Jocketty understood and was able to go out and find it. That won’t happen until Dusty is gone.
At least that’s my hope. My one last shred of hope.

Bob is very impulsive and it clearly affects his judgement
However, I do think Jocketty, unlike Krivsky, will be able to calm Bob down and convince him he’s got everything under control. Eventually Bob will stop knee-jerking about every 10-15 game stretch and let Walt take over.
Sure Bob hired Krivsky, but he didn’t have the cache with Bob that Walt does.
He’ll have Bob lay down with his blankie and a tranquilizer and sing him a lullaby about the good ol’ days in St. Louie. “It’ll be just like it was at Busch, Bobbie, and we’ll contend for the division every year. You just have to trust Uncle Walt and everything will be juuuust fine. Juuuust fine. Now drink your juice and crawl back in bed…..

I don't think so
I think Bob can be the owner this city needs. I just don’t see any examples of why Bob is the problem. He fired Wayne prematurely but the guy brought us in someone who won a World Series and has a great track record as a GM. He also shelled out the money to a new closer, someone Wayne felt we “needed” and he shelled out big bucks to a successful manager who also has a great track record, but it now looks like Dusty’s record comes from luck. I don’t think he is like McClane at all. Bob is just in his first season and is still easily excited. He will learn.
He also seems to really like Dunn and thats the reason I don’t think Dunn is going anywhere. He also really wants to win and if Walt can convince him to spend the $ the right ways this team will have success. I also don’t think it will be too hard for Bob to see through Dusty’s bullshit and if he keeps losing he will get the axe at some point next season. If Tony LaRussa ever becomes an option Dusty will be out the door before you can say toothpick.

Couple o' thoughts
1. I agree with many of the posters above. The guys we assume Krivsky wanted>>>>the guys we assume Dusty wanted. I’d be sorely disappointed if we got a team of Pattersons.
2. Slyde, I’d give Jockety a pass so far, in terms of remaking the team (if that’s what needs done).
If we give him the benefit of the doubt (that he knows what he’s doing), the in-season market may have tied his hands. For instance, I think the team still needs a solid #2 starter (Volquez has reverted to his old self the past couple of months, though his troubles started immediately after The Game). During the season, when everyone’s trying to make the playoffs, those guys are much more expensive (prospect-wise) than after the season, when some might even be available for “free” through free agency.
Plus, I’d divide the major league roster into guys you need to keep (Dunn, Votto, EdE, Bruce), guys you’d be selling low (Arroyo), and guys with no value (Patterson, Freel (because he’s injured), any of the catchers). Only 3 guys are really tradable, and in my mind expendable – Weathers, Lincoln, and Hairston. We don’t know if Jockety tried to move any of these three. If I had to guess, he couldn’t get anything of value for the relievers, and he didn’t try to move Hairston (or severely overvalued him).
One thing he didn’t do, which is the basis of my hatred of The Trade, is panic. Given his track record, I confident he won’t in the future, either.
Often wrong, never uncertain.
