here's a list of some of the moves that Walt has made since taking over
brought up Jay Bruce
brought up Homer Bailey
brought up Jerry Hairston
released/reaquired Andy Phillips
brought up/sent down Danny Herrara
brought up Jolbert Cabrera
traded Ken Griffey
brought up/sent down Todd Coffey
i’ll cut him some slack though. he’s only had like 8 months to get to know the roster.
there is no reason why guys like Hanigan and Dickerson should still be playing in AAA. if indeed the motive for this lack of action is an attempt to have a .500 season, Walt is more incompetent than i had at first believed. this team is obviously deficient in a number of areas and is in no position to make a run at anything better than 5th place. if he actually looks at this roster and sees potential for improvement from guys like Bako, Valentin, Patterson, Fogg, et al, then i will personally call Wayne Krivsky and beg him to come back. and thats a fact jack.
i know its very premature of me to be losing faith in the new GM, and perhaps this recent losing jag has something to do with it. but i really am missing the days of Action Wayne Krivsky and his roster-move-of-the-day desk calendar. in hindsight, it really looks like he had a plan and was becoming decently adept at implementing it. Walt has watched a flailing team for months now and has done nothing significant (you know, im feeling charitable so i’ll count the Jr trade as a significant move. so there’s one). the riff-raff on this roster needs to be cleaned up.
perhaps Dusty really is the onus behind all this though. maybe guys like Valentin and Patterson still have jobs and Hairston is being considered for a full-time gig because thats the way Dusty likes it. if that is really true then this problem is alot bigger than i thought. Walt worked with LaRussa for so long in StL and maybe LaRussa was the real ringleader over there. i dont really have anything to back that up, but the amount of influence that Dusty apparently has over this roster is very disturbing.
when Walt was handed this job, Bob (in)famously said “the losing stops now”, or something to that effect. and in the lousy following months Walt has done nothing. i mean, even if he dropped Valentin to sign John Mabry, that would still look like progress to me because at least it is something. i dont know. im really frustrated right now. im tired of being smarter than the guys running my favorite team. its embarrassing for all of us.

Walt said he was going to be hands-off
sort of the antithesis of Krivsky. Jocketty said he was going to let the people under him do most of the heavy lifting and delegate rather than take total control and do business behind closed doors, away from the rest of the ownership group and other parts of the organization. Can’t we find some sort of middle ground?
I still say we need to get Chris Antonelli from Cleveland but I fear that “real baseball fans” wouldn’t understand his sabermetric, analytic style much like when Paul DePodesta was run out of LA.

Charlie ... I agree with most of your post
I want Dickerson to be the starting center fielder. How long does C-Patt get to do everything in his power to lose the spot? I disagree about Jerry Hariston. He earned the right to be a starter, except he keeps getting hurt. I’m glad he traded Junior, mostly for Junior’s sake, but I wish there was one exciting prospect back for Griffey. And, truthfully, I think he should have worked to get some more trade action accomplished before the deadline, though you can’t really tell if that was Walt’s doing or not.
The Reds need a plan. And they can’t fire their GM every two years. I said this with DOD. I’ve said this with Krivsky. And now with Jocketty. When you hire ‘em. you’ve go to let them do their job, and you’ve got to let it rip.
But I am starting a Chris Dickerson fan club (with the flip side of that being that C-Patt has lost his job).

i do agree with you
that the GM has to be allowed to implement his plan. too much turnover just means you keep spinning your wheels. i still have hope that Jocketty can lead us down the right path, but between you and me im not holding my breath.
but i could not disagree more about Hairston. he has had less than 200 ABs thus far this year and he’s done a great job. but that does nothing to cancel out the 2500 ABs he’s had over the last 10 years where he has proven to be no better than a fringe bench player. he is 32 now and i can assure you that his best days are behind him, and those days sucked. he will only suck even more over the next few years if we allow him to.
so not only has he sucked his whole career and can assuredly go right back to sucking once the devil takes his due, but we also have a better version of him signed for next year already in the person of Ryan Freel. this team has been plagued enough by roster redundancy in the past few years. let’s not keep doing it.
