Farmers only, with Stubbs and Yonder
Triple-A: Drew Stubbs was 2 for 4 with a triple in the Bats' 5-4 loss. Todd Coffey blew the save, and Daniel Ray Herrera gave up 2 runs for the loss. Jared Burton made a rehab appearance, giving up a run and throwing a wild pitch.
Double-A: Chris Heisey was 3 for 5 with a grand slam in Chattanooga's 11-7 win. Heisey's doing his thing in Double-A, sporting a .918 OPS in 15 games.
High A: Yonder Alonso had a single and an RBI sac fly, but Zach Stewart blew up in the ninth, giving up 2 runs in Sarasota's 2-1 loss. Matt Klinker struck out 10 and allowed just 2 hits and no runs in 6 innings in the no-decision.
Low A: Neftali Soto doubled and Brandon Waring was 1 for 3 with an RBI in Dayton's 2-0 win. Enerio del Rosario struck out 10 and walked none in the complete game, and Waring and Zach Cozart were named to the Midwest League postseason All-Star team.
Rookie leagues: Alex Buchholz doubled as Billings was rocked 9-0.

The New Orleans Zephyrs
have announced hurricane contingency plans.
Hurricane Gustav looks like it could be a bad one. The National Hurricane Center says it could reach Cat. 5 (though so far, most forecasters are expecting it to be a Cat. 3 at landfall). Ground zero is currently predicted to be just west of New Orleans, but Houston/Galveston are also possible.
Forecasts are very uncertain this far out, for track as well as intensity, but they are already making plans to evacuate New Orleans. Wherever it hits, it looks like it’s going impact oil infrastructure, which is pretty thick from New Orleans to Houston. Which probably means…you guessed it…higher gas prices. Or even shortages. Might want to gas up the car, just in case.
Gustav is expected to make landfall Monday or Tuesday. Which would put the GOP in a bit of a pickle. They have their convention then, but no one will care if there’s another Katrina going on at the same time. Not to mention, it will make them look really callous and out of touch, if they’re partying during a disaster. (You’re doing a heck of a job, Brownie!)

how much of that oil and gas infrastructure was fixed since Katrina?
of course, it probably WAS the first thing fixed. But yeah, can never hurt to have plans to evacuate NOLA

My wife, who works in the Public Health Service, has been put on alert
for the first time in the two years she’s had the job. There are definitely some questions as to whether the NOLA infrastructure (not just buildings and levees, but emergency services) are prepared for another large hurricane yet.

My mom's a nurse in Shreveport
and she’s been put on call as well. She worked the triage centers in Central Louisiana during Katrina.
The road and highway infrastructure isn’t as it should be because NO officials, as they so often do, misappropriated a lot of the funds in the first few months. It’s gotten better in the last year, apparently,
If the hurricane actually hits NO, it will probably be a huge blessing that much of the low-lying neighborhoods were not rebuilt quickly.

Some never was
Production has still not fully recovered from Katrina, and perhaps it never will. (With older wells, it may not be worth rebuilding the infrastructure to get the small amount of oil left. Kinda like you might not bother repairing an old beater if it gets into an accident. While it’s working, fine, use it, but you’re not going to spend a lot of money to fix it.)
They’ve upgraded the oil platforms, but if the hurricane is bad enough, it won’t help. Mother Nature bats last, as the saying goes.
Gas prices have already spiked on the Gulf Coast, and there are scattered shortages. Everyone’s gassing up their cars for evacuation. The refineries may stop exporting gasoline in order to supply local demand. They will probably have to shut down as the hurricane nears.
Worst case scenario is if Gustav holds its power inland more than Katrina did, and takes out the aging electrical infrastructure down there. No power, no way to pump the gas through the pipelines to the midwest, southeast, and northeast. (California is not connected to the rest of the system, so they should be relatively unaffected.)

Pssh, Red Reporter has been posting pictures of her for over a year
We are all about the scoops. I guess McCain’s announcing her selection in Dayton. I should call my parents and tell them to go. They could bring her a smoked salmon or something, make her feel welcome.
Wonder if McCain ditched his wife to get her on the ticket…

If any of you hipsters are like me
you’re finding Sarah Palin less attractive now that everyone knows about her. This is Feist’s music all over again. It’s time to move on and become early-adopters of the next trend in hotties.

For graphic design nerds, its neat to see how Obama has revamped the Democratic image
NYTimes has a neat article about the whole thing. All of the zeroes in the signage are actually "O"s (as in Obama), making “08” look like “OB” pretty easily. The whole thing was changed, which is neat.
And VP candidate Palin did have a wikipedia page that earlier today informed me that “She likes dicks.” But she apparently almost won a beauty pageant, hunts moose, and won the state basketball championship running point, all of which is sort of cool.

Here's 10 things you didn't know about Sarah Palin (besides everything)
Link.
Check out her kids’ names: Bristol, Piper, Track, Willow, and Trig. Good lord. Three things: 1) Piper Palin? 2) She just had a kid earlier this year, yet she also has a son that’s joining the army (he enlisted on Sept. 11 last year. Yeesh.). 3) That newborn has Down’s Syndrome and is named Trig. Makes sense.

So who can't wait to see Stubbs at GABP?
If he shows anything in September and ST, I would be fine with an outfield of Stubbs-CF, Bruce-RF, Dickerson-LF. Yeah it may not win us the pennant, but does anyone really expect that next year?
by jacob brumfield on Aug 29, 2008 8:47 AM EDT 0 recs
I can't wait to see anyone other than Patterson in CF
but getting a sneak-peak of Stubbs would give me a reason to pay attention in September.

I was just thinking this
Is there any reason not to have Stubbs called up this September? Also, I haven’t really been paying attention to our minor league clubs this year (maybe it would have given me some source of hope), who else can we expect to see and who might be able to contribute next year? Anyone?

for as much pub as Bruce got for going up 3 levels in a year
Stubbs has, too. And is a likely callup.
Also, Matt Klinker writes sometimes at RedlegNation.com. He seems like a good guy…pretty sharp too. I am very ok with him pitching like that so far.

The problem with Stubbs is that he's always been old for his level
He’s barely a year younger than Votto. So, he’s gotten less pub for his rise over three levels partly because he should have been in Double-A to start the season.

I think they have to make an effort to get someone better than Dickerson in LF
but a CF of Stubbs/Dickerson could be pretty good. Stubbs should get most of the playing time, but having Dickerson there could help ease both of them into their roles. But having two guys with good defensive reputations and who have shown an ability to get on base would be good when they inevitably bat lead-off.
