Mostly sunny. Winds blowing out to right field at 5-10 m.p.h. Game Time temperature: Around 90.

Complete Coverage >

W-L ERA WHIP K BB
2008 - Aaron Harang 4-13 5.35 1.48 119 41

W-L ERA WHIP K BB
2008 - Brandon Backe 8-12 5.54 1.60 116 71

Afternoon game today.  Man, I really wish Harang had been shutdown.  I hope he's actually healthy and not just being a trooper for this shitty team.  No way this team is competitive next season without a healthy Harang.

Reds NL Central magic number is down to 5.  They are really trying to make it tight, aren't they?

Did you guys see the Chicago Sun-Times tear Jay Mariotti a new one?

It’s awesome! (hat tip CTR)

I get my sports news from "humorous" websites

So I read that and thought it was made up. God, that’s good. “I’ll miss him around here. Not personally, of course.”

When Mariotti was leaving, I thought I'd miss him

but it turns out that I’ve got pretty good aim and I hit him squarely with the front bumper.

Awesome!

He still has a gig with ESPN though! Although he is not even the biggest douche on ESPN!

1. Jim Rome
2. Skip Bayliss
3. Stephen A. Smith
4. Woody Paige

are all ahead of him.

Gonna Have to disagree zach

Every person you listed there has at some point entertained me.

Mariotti has never done anything that didn’t make me want to change the channel.

Jim Rome’s radio show is actually really good.

by chandrathan on Aug 29, 2008 12:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

What!

Jim Rome’s radio show is him blabbering on the whole time.

Skip Bayliss is like Reynard and Micheal x100 but except he gets paid lots of $ to do it

Stephen A. Smith ruined the 2007 NBA Draft with his non stop blabbering

Wood Paige always tries to make a “Good Ole Day” story out of everything.

Ok
  • Jim Rome’s radio show is him blabbering on the whole time.

Yep, that’s what you do when you host a radio show.

  • Skip Bayliss is like Reynard and Micheal x100 but except he gets paid lots of $ to do it

At least his is clever and funny in his wrongness. Mariotti is neither.

  • Stephen A. Smith ruined the 2007 NBA Draft with his non stop blabbering

Not a huge Stephen A. Fan, but I still like him better than Mariotti.

  • Wood Paige always tries to make a "Good Ole Day" story out of everything.

He is a buffoon, but he embraces playing the part. I’d say that them making fun of him is what made Around the Horn.

If Jime Rome blabbered all the time on his radio show it would be a huge improvement

The thing about Rome’s radio show is he takes long pauses.
.

.
.
.
.
.
He takes these huge pauses on his radio show.
.

.
He takes them to fill time and he repeats himself a lot.

.

He repeats himself! And takes long pauses.

Last night I listened to a half inning of the game on the radio

and Brantley said flat out twice in a 6 minute inning. It included this gem, “That’s how you get flat out of a double play.” (in regards to Joey Votto breaking up a double play) It’s like his mind knew the word “out” was coming up so it naturally threw a “flat” in front of it.

Yeah, you're probably right.

I just think he seems like the perfect guy that Dusty would like on his staff. Former Red, black, speedy outfielder, and he had a great deal of success, even if it was unorthodox. Dusty doesn’t seem like the type that would actually consider a player’s swing before hiring him to coach his team’s hitting.

As the saying goes, when you're playing the Astros, make Ty Wigginton beat you

As Aaron Harang’s saying goes, I walked into a door at Ty Wigginton’s house.

Brantley

Is he telling Harang how to pitch? Brantley should be a pitching coach with all of his wisdom.

Honestly

1. It would get him out of the radio booth
2. He’d be better at it than Dick Pole

Damn throw out Ty, and this'd be hell of a start.

It’s still been pretty damn good, hope for ’09, at least. Too bad he drops to 4-15 because this offense is so completely inept

Even with Ty it's a quality start

I haven’t been watching, but were any of the HRs an Enron special? Quintero’s looks pretty shallow in LF.

yeah, they were all to the LF short porch

Quintero’s hit the Chik-Fil-A cow.

Is Hova maybe starting to turn it around?

Opposite field triple. I’ll take it.

5 hits, eh?

Has anyone noticed that Bako’s almost caught up to Patterson’s ineptness, at least in terms of batting average? Oh, and he’s already reached a lower slugging percentage. Impressive.

Bako: .206/.278/.318 in 298 PAs
Patterson: .196/.233/.337 in 295 PAs (before today)

I think we overmeet as a society.

by Gray on Aug 28, 2008 3:45 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

the most remarkable part is that they've combined for nearly 600 PAs

That’s roughly 13% of your total PAs for the entire year (not counting pitchers).

Any chance Dusty pinch-hits for CoPat?

Hah!

I’m sure he is “due” according to Dusty..

nice call

Of course, with that clutch hit he’s all but sealed his contract extension.

I read this as Dusty pinch-hitting himself for Corey.

I’d probably take that.

Dusty’s mental notebook is a Lisa Frank with a Felix the Cat flipbook on the corners that he and Corey drew

I’d like to see Carousel at GABP sometime.

Unfortunately, that's a bit optimistic

The true magic number was actually 4, before this game. The thing is, the traditional magic number doesn’t take into account the fact that since all the teams above you are playing each other, they can’t ALL lose.

At RIOT, they use Network Optimization to find the true magic number. The way to read it is that the Reds need to win 25 games and get ALL the breaks in order to win the Central. Of course, they need only win 19 games and get ALL the breaks in order to win the wild card. And, they have 29 games left.

It’s extremely geeky. I’ve been watching for about 4 years, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen the true number diverge from the classic Magic Number by more than 1 or 2. So, it’s lots of effort for very little gain.

But, it’s some Cal guy’s effort, so, that’s cool.

so, you're saying there's still a chance?
