Fantasy Football--the fierce urgency of now

We need to get moving on a RR fantasy football league if we want to be able to do a live draft on Yahoo. The past few years we were forced to draft on Red Reporter which was a pain (although the new system should alleviate that if it comes to it).

The following people expressed interest the last time the waters were tested:

sonant1
MixFMKyle
Charlie Scrabbles
BK
Lakeman
snohio
jacob brumfield
crolfer
obc
Red Menace
Officer Dibble
greg456
chesirecat
chandrathan
Caleb (if needed)

In addition the following were involved last year (sorry if I missed you)

Ash
Brian B
sledridge (where has he been?)

Anyone else is welcome to throw their hat into the ring now. So far it looks like 14 strong committments with a potential for 18, plus whoever jumps in now. I think we should be able to get to 20 so we can have two leagues. That would increase the chances that everyone could make their draft time.

What time works best for drafting? 7-ish on a weeknight? Stay tuned to this thread for league-joining info which will probably be forthcoming.

UPDATE

The league with a live draft will be this Wednesday at 7:45pm Eastern (8 was unavailable and the next time was 10). If enough people really have a problem starting this soon we can move to Thursday, but the times would still be 7:45 or 10.

The max teams is 14. You can still edit your rankings and let the computer autodraft for you if you like. However there is also an

Autodraft league

I will hand over commissionership and drop out once enough people join this one. Once everyone is ready the commish will tell the computer to do the autodraft. There’s more time to get a crew together here and fantasy first timers are welcome to join as it should be a more mellow scene.

would 8:00 ET be too late?

here in the central time zone, it would be very difficult to make a 7:00 ET start. but if that’s what it must be, i’ll live.

personally

I’d much rather do it as late as possible. I don’t know how the daywalkers feel about it.

I second 8:00 eastern

Getting home for a 6:00 draft in the central is tough.

I hate live drafting...

But mark me down just the same.. And truthfully, the later the better for me.. 9pm and on, broken up to two nights like last year. I got to help with getting the chitlens to bed.

I don’t know why we can’t just autodraft and have folks set their priorities before it starts. Truthfully, I am just the SUCK at drafting and would prefer to let a monkey (or a computer) do it for me..

9pm+ on schoolnights

dumb question, yahoo blows up my Mozilla. It freezes it every time. im tinkering, and will contact jch for advice. lol, remember i went to college pre-internet!!!

maybe we could have one live draft and one auto draft if we have two leagues?

by obc2 on Aug 24, 2008 8:00 PM EDT   0 recs

I'm drafting in yahoo right now on FF

No problems whatsoever. Other than my WR corps. :)

How can such a good looking man be so bad at getting to first base?

Yahoo Live Draft

Not sure if anyone has done it yet this year, but the interface seems to be markedly better other than the annoying as hell Chex Mix ad that even AdBlock couldn’t get rid of. We drafted a 12 team/15 round league in just over an hour. Not bad at all, other than the fact that I’m depending on the likes of Calvin Johnson and Patrick Crayton for fantasy success.

Two Leagues.

I’d be down for two leagues.

I’m terrible at these 16 team leagues. We could make an auto “draft beer” league. Anyone for a second – less pressure – non-official RR NFL league?

I would be interested in a less competitive league.

How long do these drafts usually take? Is it really 10 hours?

Tanzen!

Interesting Fantasy Draft strategy

on Advanced NFL stats.com. It is a great site anyways to check out.

btw I love that ESPN ad for NFL Live

“Get expert insider information!”

Cut to Mark Schlereth “This is guy is a flat out winner!”

Now I see why Jeff Brantley flat out had a gig on baseball tonight.

I'm not going to participate but I cast my meaningless vote for an RR draft thread

I set up my own league

I already bore you with soccer, so I want to keep my football (mostly) to myself. But the idea of participating in a draft thread and throwing out names to confuse the people who are actually drafting is evil genius on a shortstopv2 level.

re

Here it is. It started at 8:10 and ended at 1:30 with four rounds to go. It picked up the next night and went from 9 to 11. So that’s about seven hours. If we do it through the Yahoo system it should only take 1-2.

What about a Yahoo draft with an open thread here on RR?

Would that appease all parties involved?

Yeah, and it you know, doesn't take 7 hours.

And when people inevitably don’t show up, people don’t have to pick for them.

My results from last night:

WR/T – Calvin Johnson/Cotchery/Crayton/Dallas Clark/Marty Booker/Owen Daniels
K – Kaeding
DEF – Tennessee

I don't mind a later start time, necessarily

But I can tell you that with a new baby, it would be difficult for me to engage in one of those 26 hour game thread marathon fantasy draft thingys.

I would much prefer a live draft set up through the draft tool on Yahoo or Espen that would allow me to drift in and out if I need to.

FYI

The autodraft has to be done by Sept 1st for week 1 to count. If you do it after that (first game is the 4th) there’s a setting you have to check to make week 1 stats count.

by Red Menace on Aug 25, 2008 9:53 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

10:00 would be great

Seriously. But I understand if there are people who can’t do it.

If it’s at 7:45, I’ll have to autodraft.

by greg456 on Aug 25, 2008 11:17 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

yeah, 7:45 is going to be brutal, but possible. My wife is going to kill me.

We’re closing on our house Wednesday, and she’s going to pushing me to start moving everything we can afterwards. But, hey, the football draft is the football draft. Ain’t nuthin’ I can do about it.

by Brian B on Aug 25, 2008 11:36 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I can switch it to 10

What are people’s thoughts? I thought fewer people would want to do 10 but I would definitely prefer it as late as possible.

I should just sign up for a half dozen leagues early on and get a good mix of times. Then after one is decided on I can delete the extraneous leagues.
