Game 131: Reds at Rockies

Cincinnati Reds at Colorado Rockies, Aug 24, 2008 3:05 PM EDT

Next Game

Cincinnati Reds
@ Colorado Rockies

Sunday, Aug 24, 2008, 3:05 PM EDT
Coors Field

Johnny Cueto vs Ubaldo Jimenez

Partly cloudy. Winds blowing in from left field at 5-10 m.p.h. Game Time temperature: Around 85.

Complete Coverage >

W-L ERA WHIP K BB
2008 - Johnny Cueto 8-12 4.74 1.37 142 55

W-L ERA WHIP K BB
2008 - Ubaldo Jimenez 9-11 3.99 1.48 129 78

It's a matchup of young, hard-throwing Dominican phenoms today.  Cueto has been pitching very well of late, but the Reds only have one win in his last 5 starts.  He still needs two wins to get to my artificial goal of double-digit wins.

Jimenez is a couple of years older than Cueto and a much wilder, but his ERA is better because he's only allowed 9 HR compared to Cueto's 26.  He threw 6 shutout innings against the Reds last month in a game in a game where he only allowed 5 hits (2 by Dunn, 1 by Griffey, Votto, and Bruce).  Hopefully the offense can continue to be the juggernaut they've been so far in Colorado.

I don't know if anyone caught this last night

but Brantley tried to make a case about how the “Post Dunn and Griffey Era” has made the Reds a better team.

I recall him saying something about how the Reds can score in every other inning now with the young players and “not have just one big inning of getting 4 or 5 runs.”

Not only did his statement not make any sense but the Reds scored 6 runs last night and lost the game still! Must be the ghost of Adam Dunn’s bad influence then.

Norris Hopper's #1 fan!!!

I heard that

And chuckled at the idiocy. I also heard him state at some point recently that this team was “a couple of guys away” from making a run at things. I think he’s either retarded, drunk, or both.

How can such a good looking man be so bad at getting to first base?

I haven't really been following Olympic baseball

But I just noticed that Jeff Stevens was on the team. Yup, the guy we traded for Brandon Phillips. So does Stevens’s bronze medal help even that trade up a little? No? Ok then.

Still rehabbing that broken knee

Which doesn’t make me feel especially good about his prospects for next season. Even though he had a bit of pop last season, we brought him in for his defensive prowess. That was already questionable last season, but counting on the man for his defense after he missed an entire season with a bad knee doesn’t fill me with confidence for 2009. I’m not really sure that he really would be better than all of the in-house SS candidates. At the very least, it doesn’t seem prudent to rely on him 100% for next season, and the higher-ups have to realize that shortstop has been abysmal for us this year. I just no longer see the harm in at least looking at what Phillips can do there.

How does a ground out to first base tickle you?

It’s a testament to Corey that he still manages to amaze me with his ineptitude. I know he’s terrible, but he does things so badly on such a consistent basis as to truly be stunning. It’s even passed the level of farce. It will take a greater mind than my own to properly contextualize the Corey Patterson era in Cincinnati.

I thought the throw was okay

It bounced high, EdE tried to grab it and slap tag at 3B. He missed it and it kicked into the dugout.
