Who is Chris Dickerson?
Is this guy for real? Every morning I check the Reds' boxscore and he has a couple of hits. And he's fast, too. Is he the Reds' RF of the future? Are the Reds going to give him a chance. Your help would be appreciated. I'm in a keeper league and am trying to figure out whether Dickerson could have any fantasy value. My only concern is that he was a little old when he got called up (26).
I look at his stats and see Justin Maxwell. I'm guessing that he's a little bit better than that.

Dickerson
Dickerson is a pure CF defensively. He is right there with Drew Stubbs as the best defensive outfielder we have in the organization, big leagues or not. He can’t hit lefties to save his life and he strikes out enough to make Adam Dunn resemble a normal strikeout guy. He does have the ability to hit righties though, has good plate discipline and like stated earlier, can cover more ground in CF than most. He isn’t likely much more than the platoon guy that faces the right handers, but at league minimum prices, thats extremely valuable to have.

Doug, does he at all remind you of Curtis Granderson?
by Brian B on Aug 19, 2008 11:33 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
yes and no
They have a somewhat similar skill set, but Granderson doesn’t strike out as much and was a better player at a younger age. I don’t think Dickerson can put up a season, much less 2 like Granderson has the last two seasons.

Doesn't strike out as much?
Youch. Granderson’s k-rate is miserable, but he’s shown he can control it and become productve. I like Dickerson’s athleticism, raw as it is, because he’s showing he can improve his game at every level . . . like Granderson has each year. That’s why I have hope for Dickerson. i wouldn’t advocate putting any stock in him, but hopefully he’s around and not guys like Hopper, Patterson, and Cabrera (sorry to lump you with those guys, Jolbert. You’re just old). I forget that Ryan Freel is still a Red.

Who is Chris Dickerson?
He’s Eric’s cousin.

Guys like Dickerson
remind me of Chris Stynes.
Not that they are similar players, but that they come up in the wake of a fire sale, when they’d otherwise be a career minor leaguer, catch lightning in a bottle for a little bit, get talked about all winter as a real solution, then stink for the next two years while people say “yeah but remember when he was so good when he was called up in 2008?”

NoHo
you could probably put Norris Hopper on that same list.

Don't forget Jacob Brumfield!
Chris Denorfia definetly deserves a mention as well. Gookie Dawkins was The Future once.
On the pitchers side, I give you Jose Acevedo, Luke Hudson, and my favorite, Josh Hall. Lance Davis, too. Yikes…we have a lot of these ones…
...because there's already someone posing as Jacob Brumfield

I'd be with you in years past
but I’m actually hoping for Dickerson to do really well for two reasons.
1. He might kick CP completely off of the team. Not even on the 40-man. Gone.
2. His playing well will lessen the need to make a splashy and stupid free agent outfield signing in the off-season. I’m worried about a Cordero type situation in the outfield: an over-valued veteran signed for too much money and too many years. Dickerson is cheap and you can jerk him out of the lineup when he starts to suck.

I agree.
But isn’t Corey off of the team at the end of the year anyway? He’s only on a 1-year deal, and there’s no way they re-sign him. And also, who’s to say that C-Pat and C-Dick won’t end up sharing the outfield for the rest of the year? Maybe not when Hairston get fully healthy, but until then, it’s C-Pat or Jolbert for the third OF spot, and we all know who Dusty favors there.
I may just cheer extra hard for C-Dick just for your second point.

Hahaha

I wish I could agree, but at this point nothing they do would surprise me.
How can such a good looking man be so bad at getting to first base?

jch's outrageous is likely nutrageous
I’m more a hello man and a welcome man than a good-bye man. And to me Adam Dunn was more a person than a player.

There's a lot of things about this season that are angering,
but Dickerson floundering in the minors while Corey was installing the “Patterson Line” as the new standard for ineptitude with a bat enrages me. Did they think they had to play Corey because he’s making 3 mill? i don’t get it, Patterson still plays center though Dickerson is a better fielder by all accounts. Whatever, I know he wasn’t tearing it up in AAA, but at least give the guy a chance. And (bobestes I just read your post) he might stink next year, so what? Corey Patterson always stinks.

fantasy value
Even in mixed leagues Dickerson should have plenty of fantasy value for the rest of the year since he’ll be getting plenty of playing time. He can be a useful piece in the Reds’ future, but you have to be able to do better than him on your keeper list.
