Game 124: Cardinals at Reds
St. Louis Cardinals @ Cincinnati Reds
|
|
|
Here we go, another pivotal matchup. This is one of the most important games for the Reds in the past few weeks, so we really need to capitalize. The Central race is far from over, and we have nearly a 50 percent chance of winning today. Everything rests on what happens in this game.

My mistake
I thought you were using “bat” as a generic term for shitty fill-in player. Like “body.” I’m a bit slow.

Neither did Patterson, though he was sent down later.

If Andy Phillips were in the lineup, would he be a Bat or a Crappy Bench Player? Or a Crappy Bench Player Bat?

Fay on Alonso
Talked to Walt Jocketty about Yonder Alonso today. Two things:
—They think he’ll be ready in the 2010. “He thinks he’s ready now,” Jocketty said. “I like that.”
—The Reds will consider moving Joey Votto to the outfield. Left is the obvious spot. Alonso will work out at third base as well as first.
Was it a good signing? It depends on how Alonso turns out. I think he has the potential to be a Lance Berkman type — a good hitter with power and a great on-base percentage. His on-base was .534 this year. The Reds need more hitters like that. This team is terrible at running up pitch counts.
But it’s a huge step from college to the majors. We saw that with Brandon Larson, who the Reds took over Berkman by the way.
Here’s the details on the contract:
—$2 million signing bonus. $1.5 million paid at approval. $500,000 paid June 15, 2009.
—$50,000 in salary for the rest of this season.
—$400,000 in 2009; $500,000 in 2010; $600,000 in 2011; $1 million in 2012.
—Tuition payments of three semesters at $26,000 each ($20,000-tuition; $6,000 expenses.)
—Family trip to Major League Debut
—Bonus money: $25,000 Rookie of the year; $100,000 MVP; $25,000 Gold Glove; $100,000 World Series MVP; $50,000 League Champion Series MVP; $25,000 Silver Slugger; $50,000 All-Star MVP; $25,000 All-Star selection.
—2012 may be voided if he has enough Major League service time to qualify for arbitration.

The tuition payments are a nice touch
and I love this line from Fay:
His on-base was .534 this year. The Reds need more hitters like that.
Well, yeah. Getting on base more than half the time would be great, now that you mention it. I think that the 1976 Reds could use more players who got on base half the time.

Miami has a very good program. One of my daughters went to school there and the baseball program is more consistent than their Football program. This kid could be ready really quickly. He knows how to take a walk….of course Dustbag will cure him of that.

One thing I just don't get
Why do the Reds keep rushing players back from the DL?
They brought Hopper back when he could hardly throw. They activated Keppinger when his knee was still sore. They brough Cherry back when he wasn’t ready…twice.
And now we have not-ready-for-prime time Harang.
I mean, WTF? It’s not like the Reds’ season is on the line.

BTW - (belch) did i tell you guys that I attended a new fucking age funeral?
It was bizarre to say the least. I am not easily phased by trendy shit. Esp. old trendy shit. But these people (holding the funeral) were like my age (I’m 59)..and I don’t believe they had a clue as to what they were talking about. I wish Man Mountain could have been there just to give the contrarian opposing view at the reception afterwards,I wanted to slip a little blotter acid into the Perrier just to spice things up but Mrs. Mads gave me ‘that look’ and I chickened out.

For whatever reason Harang is truly toast,
Dear gejoe:
WE DID once have a play a lot like Albert. But he was fat and lazy and selfish, He struck every time the pressure was on and he was really disliked by the most important baseball mind in town – sMarty. Maybe someddaay we’ll get another one and he can be run out of town two.

Storytime for gJoe
Dear gejoe:
We once had a really good pitcher on our hometown team. Our team is called the ‘Deads’, This pitcher was a good guy and pitched all the time, many many innings pitched he, He volunteered once to pitch in an extra innings game for like 5 innings to help out the ‘team’.
Our manager was so grateful that he pitched him again 3 days later and now our pitcher is toast. This story has a happy ending, tonight out pitcher only had to pitch 3 innings!
The end.

When that pitcher went out and pitched in relief he was absolutely unstoppable, striking out 10 in that time. he’d never looked better. Sad that he used up all his decent abilities in that fucking loss.
