W-L ERA WHIP K BB
2008 - Bronson Arroyo 10-9 5.44 1.51 120 48

This is probably the biggest game of the night for the Reds.  A win tonight and they play tomorrow.  A loss and they have to wait until Saturday to play again.  It's all on Bronson's shoulders to get the job done.  Let's hope he's up to the task.

Thompson is a righty, so expect to C-Dick play tonight.  Rumor was yesterday that Cherry will be in the lineup tonight too.  I guess there's only one thing left to do.  Win. The. Whole. Damn. Thing.

Yeah

I think I’m batting about .670 in Reds wins after first posts.

But at this point, it doesn’t really matter, does it?

I’m trying to think of some guys that burst onto the scene…

Casey was though.

And Caleb would have gotten the 4th.

Hey, kid-lit guy..

The boy’s watching Peter Pan and he asks me, “Why do the pirates want to get Peter Pan and the kids?”

Got anyhting for me or do I just have to wait until he watches it again tomorrow morning and sit in on the first act?

Disney?

I can’t remember the reason the Disney film gives, if any. Prolly blames him in some way for losing his arm to the croc. And I don’t have the play handy to know what the reasoning in the play is, but in the novelization of the play Peter and Wendy it’s actually pretty interesting.

In the novel, Hook is sort of in the same position as Peter in that he can’t quite remember who he was before he took up his fight against Peter and the lost boys in Neverland. It becomes almost a sisyphean cycle of hunting. The lost boys, the pirates, the Indians and the croc all hunting one another in a big circle. This is literally how the reader first encounters Neverland — all parties hunting one another in a circle.

When Peter kills Hook towards the conclusion we learn that there have been many Hooks that Peter has killed and it’s just a constant game in which a new Hook appears once Peter’s forgotten about killing the last one. Peter hunts pirates because that’s what Lost Boys do and Hook hunts Peter because that’s what Pirates do.

That’s pretty much what I pulled out of my croc and told him.

Good stuff. Thanks.

I would really recommend Peter and Wendy

for a quick and fascinating read. While other adaptations largely ignore this, the novel really explores the spiteful nature of a boyishness that refuses to mature. Peter isn’t merely a figure of fantasy or tragedy, but one of evil — at least the evil of indifference. You find yourself hoping that Wendy frees herself from him. The novel is aware not only of cruelty to children, but the cruelty of children towards the ones who love them most.

I'll check it out.

A college girlfriend recommended it to me and I of course childishly ignored her advice.

Now with a book-and-movie crazy three year-old, I’m fascinated by the hazy “back stories” of Pinnochio, Robin Hood, Mowgli, Peter Pan and such so I’m trying to do what I can to avoid shrugging my shoulders when I’m asked these important questions.

On a somewhat related note, I’m trying to decide where do begin young Preston’s Star Wars indoctrination… A New Hope which is what any self-respecting child-of-the-70’s-turned-“cool dad” would want, or Phantom Menace which is what Lucas would want, or Clone Wars which is what Preston wants and also what I would want if I were him.

Get him the Cartoon Network "Clone Wars" movies

I guarantee they’ll be better. Although they won’t be in the theater. And yeah, I would start him out with “A New Hope,” if I was choosing.

Yet it's worth considering...

that even though I hate Menace and you hate Menace and pretty much everyone this side of Mos Eisley hates Menace, you know who would love it?
