Question
Are the sharks at the Newport Aquarium actually a worthwhile exhibit?

And, in addition to all that fun,

even the sharks?
My gf (obsessed with sharks) watched some special where they making some shark a birthday cake and it said that Newport had a large shark holding.
Anway, she’s finally interested in going to Cincy and might foot the bill for a trip next spring.
Work with me, folks. Give me some local pablum I can parrot.

I have a friend who works there
As I told him – I don’t care about the museum one way or the other as long as not one penny of tax money is ever used. If people are crazy enough to donate money to the building of that place so be it.
How can such a good looking man be so bad at getting to first base?

That museum raises so much money
It’s insane, but it’s incredibly well funded, and I believe it comes entirely from private donations.
by Brendanukkah on Aug 15, 2008 10:39 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
It is
They were completely funded (~$25 million) via donations.
I’m not sure if they pay taxes or not, I’ll have to find out.

Doubtful.
And don’t forget that tax money funds it, indirectly, since all of those donations were tax-deductible. So something on the order of 20% (depending on the tax brackets of the donors) was funded by the federal government.

it really isn't bad if you can go when it's not crowded
but when the crowds are there, it’s terrible because it’s a constant mess of people blocking your view and kids punching you in the nuts and odd smells of death and skoal.

When you go to and from the stadium..
..use the Roebling Bridge.
It’s a cool enough bridge that (as long you don’t talk it up too much) you’ll a share a little moment together that you’ll always remember.
Which is a hell of a lot better than having to always remember Bailey giving up fifteen hits in four innings or some such shit.

From the Fay . . .
a lot of good Fay one liners in his post game post:
"We’re hopefully," Jocketty said.
But I especially like this one because it highlights John’s over use of the parenthetical:
"But his strength is he’s very versatile. He’s a good athlete. He can run. He’s the kind of player who can be very useful to Dusty (Baker)," Jocketty said
I’m considering that Walt actually had to explain who Dusty was to Fay during this exclusive hot interview.

I don't understand Fay...
I mean, its hilarious to see him fail to be able to string sentences together, but is he challenged or something? It’s not that hard to write complete sentences… Perhaps, because he’s a writer for a lower-tier team , he feels no need to write coherently, I dunno

Boobs has intimated
and I think I’ve read elsewhere that he does suffer from some sort of dyslexia. Please correct me if I’m wrong because I don’t want to spread a false rumor.
If true, I feel for him personally, but in his professional capacity it’s pretty inexcusable. More so, I think, on the part of the paper. Someone who has problems editing and correcting his own work is a poor choice for a blogger.
But credit where it’s due, Fay at least understands the waiver wire and doesn’t seem to be a pompous asshole.

that's correct
i have a hard time faulting him for things like that, given his dyslexia, although i think it’s still fine to laugh at his mistakes. im sure he laughs at himself. as far as editing, newspapers still dont really get blogs, so they dont see why they should ever be edited. of course thats a big problem, given how much young people get their news online, but i just wanted to point out that theres not some editor out there who’s not doing his job properly.

Unrelated,
But I think Walt should make an offer for Jake Peavy. After reading this it seems that offering some cheap promising talent would get the deal done. Maybe Homer, and a couple B prospects could get it done. Of course all of this would have to take place in the offseason, and the situation by then could be resolved.

any news on Yonder?
im still divided on this. i dont think the major league deal is really an issue, as he should be more than ready for the majors in less than 3 years. but obviously the money is. i think 4 mil should be adequate. so is this thing gonna get done?
by Charlie Scrabbles on Aug 15, 2008 1:04 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Not much.
The only thing I’ve seen today is this on BP:
7. Reds: Yonder Alonso – The two sides seems to be at really severe odds 24 hours ago, but there has been some movement of late, whether or not it turns out to be enough progress in the end is still to be determined. Chances are he’ll still sign, but the chances that he won’t are higher than they should be at this point.
I got that link via CTR and he hasn’t had anything else to report today, and Fay hasn’t gotten up yet, but that might just be a result of him not being able to read his alarm clock.

Considering the draft picks before and after him signed for under $3M
$4M still seems high.
by Brendanukkah on Aug 15, 2008 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I read somewhere
that Yonder was asking for $7m, but Reds had offered $2m. In that light, $4m doesn’t seem too terrible if he’s legit.
by cesarhernandez on Aug 15, 2008 1:15 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
this was my thinking
the dude said before the draft he wanted 7 mil and a major league deal, so its foolish for us to draft him and then expect him to sign for slot. the only other pick with as many blustery stories about him coming up on signing day is Crow, and he looks almost certain to play indy ball. i dont want to drastically overpay him, but i would rather overpay a little and get him in the system than lose out. i know we get a pick next year in case, but its embarrassing to draft a guy with sign issues and then Sowers him.

wasn't there a huge to-do 'round here
over whether the Reds should choose Yonder or Crow?
I don’t remember much about Major League deals for either of them, but then again I’m no prospect-head. I just think that its sort of interesting how that turned out.

2 picks before Yonder
SF picked catcher Buster Posey, who’s rumored to have signed for $7.5mm. That might put a kink in things, though I’d be surprised if something didn’t get worked out. It’s one thing for a HS kid to threaten to go to college (like the Yankees’ pick, Gerrit Cole), it’s another to say that you’re going to sleep in ARod’s garage and play in the indy (indie?) leagues. If we’re picking numbers, I’ll say $5mm and a big league deal.

How bad could a ML deal be for the Reds?
I hope that’s not the holdup. Sure, in the past there have been players that shouldn’t have been on the 40 man (Wily Mo), but Yonder is a much more polished player already. If it’s between $4-5 mil. then shame on them both for the haggling. But, if he won’t budge from the $7 mil demand then hello #8 next year.
