Game 122: Reds at Pirates
Cincinnati Reds at Pittsburgh Pirates, Aug 14, 2008 7:05 PM EDT

Cueto needs 78 more strikeouts to break the Reds rookie record set by Gary Nolan in 1967. Since he likely only has 8 or 9 starts left, it's doubtful that he can do that, but he only needs 45 strikeouts to pass Orval Overall (1905) for the 2nd most by a Reds rookie. That is definitely within reach. It would also be great to see him get his ERA to down around 4.5. That would mean he'd pretty much have to average a quality start every time out for the rest of the season. It won't be easy, but if he can do it he'd likely become the third Reds pitcher to win 10 games this season - the first time that has happened since 2000. (Hey, I know I'm stretching for reasons to watch right now)
Snell has really kind of sucked this year. And the Reds have hit him well in the past led by Alex Gonzalez, Javier Valentin, Ken Griffey Jr., and Ryan Freel. I think that means they have a pretty good shot tonight.
Today is the first day of the rest of the days after today. Make the most of it!

I saw that Dickerson was in the lineup and thought, "Hooray, no Corey Patterson!"
Then I got down and saw that Patterson was playing too, and I was bummed. Then I realized that the alternative was that Jolbert Cabrera would be playing, and I got confused, then disheartened, then resigned.
Can’t we at least play Hanigan over Bako?

Dusty say Hanigan's never caught Cueto
Similar to Dickerson sitting out last night because Dusty wanted to “protect his confidence……”
…..in his second big league game.
I think Dusty said C-Dick was not very good against 'tough lefties"

Yeah but
Corey Patterson hit 386 points higher than Corey Patterson vs. lefties in AAA.

I guess they can still get crappier.
Things will be slightly better whenever Votto returns. He is coming back, right?

Do you consider Valentin or A. Phillips to be the better 1B option?
by Brendanukkah on Aug 14, 2008 5:50 PM EDT up reply actions
I would argue putting Cabrera at SS over Keppinger would make it slightly more crappy
Beyond that, I’m pretty much in agreement
If he was bereaved about the Reds' season
then I don’t think he can come back yet.

I just don’t really care that much about winning the rest of our games.
I’d rather be seeing what young guys can do, protecting our pitcher’s arms, and maybe trying to raise the trade value of some guys.

Owings vs. waivers
There are conflicting reports on Owings. He is either:
1.) Injured, and thereby cannot be put on waivers
2.) Claimed already by another team (likely Washington), thereby not allowing him to be officially named as the PTBNL until after the end of the season.
3.) All of the above (I suspect this is the true answer)

What helps C-Dick most?
Dusty is “protecting” C-Dick against a tough lefty…a move that sort of made sense to me at first; Let C-Dick succeed a few games against easier pitching. But along with that “protection” comes a giant, nationally-published quote from your manager saying that you have “trouble with lefties.”
What in the name of Schottzie 02 does Dusty expect to come from that vote of confidence, that on a player’s second day, his weakness is defined and explained to the press?
I wish I would have worded all that better. I also wish Angelina Jolie was in my pants.

don’t they?

There's a game going on?
This is the point of the season where we get to know each other and meet up to drink away our sorrows while harassing Cubs fans.
C you there!
How can such a good looking man be so bad at getting to first base?
which bandwagon will you choose then?
I’m more a hello man and a welcome man than a good-bye man. And to me Adam Dunn was more a person than a player.
yeah, but I figured he's always a threat to change loyalties

Hmm... Majewski...1 run game... bases loaded... one out
How we looking? Not too good.

september blahs
i think the pitching staff can do well in Sept after teams call up rooks. Cueto and V finish strong. Arroyo also. Will Harang rebound? and can we punt Fogg soon?

Really good
A lot better than I expected. Apparently the two biggest Loved Ones fans in the world were standing right next to me (right front and center! kick ass!), so the guys in the band kept coming over and playing basically for them. Tad and Franz of the Hold Steady came out and joined them for their last song while Craig Finn was enjoying them thoroughly from the balcony above the stage. I bought a shirt of theirs, which says “We’re Gonna Grille Something This Summer.” If you’re familiar with the Hold Steady’s song, “Constructive Summer,” then you’ll find that as hilarious as I do.

are you using Safari? It can throw your shit around when the thread gets long.
I did enjoy 24 Hour Party People. And I just really like him in general. His interviews are great and he almost killed Owen Wilson.
I’ll look for your response elsewhere

Owen Wilson …How can the guy that wrote the great stuff with Wes A. be the same guy that was in Drillbit Taylor…No wonder he wanted to kill himself.

Screw NFL preseason
The fact that they charge full price for preseason football is borderline criminal.

ruined by that bs by the way

One of my favorite fantasy draft moments
Live draft, guy takes Vick #3 or so overall. (“gonna have a HUGE year”)
The Falcons preseason game is on in the background and no more than ten minutes later Vick breaks his ankle. Hilarity ensued.
How can such a good looking man be so bad at getting to first base?
His year for Bad Newz Kennelz
was amazing though.

Insider Scoop
from a Reds employee;
Dunn was a bit of a clubhouse cancer. Addition by subtraction, glad to be rid of him.
Alonso “should” be signed tomorrow. (i was AGAINST selecting him, fyi)
the comments arent mine, fyi.
