i disagree

the reds knew going in he was going to have those demands. if they didnt want to meet them, they shouldnt have drafted him, unless they never planned on signing him in the first place. I dont begrudge alonso at all for trying to use the market for his advantage. he’s a very talented player who is worth a lot of money. he should do everything he can to get it.

yeah, but....

The Reds may not have imagined that A-Rod would take him in and encourage him to play in the independent leagues.

A-Rod probably has lots of space, now that his family’s moved out, and lots of time, since he and Jeter don’t do sleepovers any more.

It's posturing

I wouldn’t expect Alonso to say that he’d settle for less than what he’s seeking, especially at this point. Plus, Fay asked him if he’d settle for $3mm – less than half of his demand. It’s more likely that they’ll settle somewhere around 5.

But I would be careful about taking ARod’s lodging offer.

I have no idea what the plan is

at least for the starting eight (or if there is one). The future starting pitching seems OK – Harang, Volquez, Cueto, Arroyo, Thompson/Baily. The future relief staff seems to be Cordero, Burton, Bray, Roenicke, etc. The set 2009 starting eight are Votto, Philips, Encarncion, and Bruce. What their positions are is a question mark. The rest are Kepp, Gonzales, and Stubbs/Dickerson? No clue.

I thought it had a chance to get through

typical Dunn at bat. Check swing to work it to 2-1. Be takes a Fuentes fastball on the outside corner. And he takes another just off the outside corner. On full count he connects on a low and away fastball for a grounder that is fielded behind second.

I gotta wonder if Bailey doesn't have Steve Blass disease

A milder form. Basically Blass disease is your mechanics become so bad, you can’t get it over the plate and walk guys at will.

Bailey’s mechanics aren’t that bad, but they are bad enough he looks sub-par against AAA hitters as he throws junk at times. This is from a guy that was a mechanics perfectionist in 2005-06(he yelled at Dan O’brien that the tandom system was “killing him” in 2005). Tonight was another example. His mechanics were very good in the first 2 innings and then bam, he fell apart. Started coming off balance, gave up hits, runs and didn’t strikeout as many guys. I don’t get it. Pole attempt to “stabelize” him with a more compact delivery hasn’t worked either. It seemed to all begin his last start in 2006 when he gave up 3 hits and 4 walks and didn’t get anybody out. He has never been the same sense except for his late 07 appearences when he was about as close as we have seen him to his 06 prime. That +curveball is still somewhere in that mind.

It is just sickening to watch this kid throw his career away. Somebody has got to have the magic touch to get him stable again, get his mechanics back on track. He needs the help bad.
