Game 121: Reds at Pirates
Cincinnati Reds at Pittsburgh Pirates, Aug 13, 2008 7:05 PM EDT
|
|
|
Maholm has given up 2 or fewer runs in 4 of his 5 starts against the Reds, although he's never gotten a win against them. Josh Fogg has given up 18 runs in 3 starts against the Pirates. None of those "stats" mean anything, but it doesn't look like a good matchup for Cincinnati in any way.

No, you don't.
You aren’t thinking like Dusty.
Andy Phillips and Corey Patterson both hit better than Chris Dickerson and Adam Rosales in Louisville.
If you’ve given up on the season, then sure, let the kids play. See what you got. (I would call up Janish, too.)
But if you haven’t given up…you play the guys with who have hit better, not who might one day hit better.

I thought there was a rain delay or something, but Gameday says otherwise.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
In all seriousness
I have no doubt that Dusty’s reasoning behind tonight’s lineup is that he wants “to ease the young guys” into the majors, “make sure guys have established roles,” etc etc. To that end. we’ll see pretty strict knifey-spoony splits. Against a tough-ish lefty like Maholm, okay, fine, whatever.
I will say that if Jocketty is calling the shots on starters, I’d like to see him also force Dusty to give dudes like Dickerson, Hanigan and Rosales as many ABs as possible vs. both LHP and RHP. Baker’s devotion to Patterson, as we know, is beyond human reasoning, but guys like Cabrera, A Phillips and Valentin shouldn’t be taking many at bats away from the younger guys.
In conclusion, why am I thinking about this?
