Pants Takes Time Out from Molesting Collies...
to play a few more childish games with Reds before he's finally jettisoned into outer space (no link on this).
According to his C-ness, Micah Owings, who was reported earlier in the evening to be one of the PTBNL in the Dunn trade, didn't make it through waivers to the Reds. One of the four teams below us made a claim. Trent won't go on record as saying it's Leatherpants but he has heard that from what he claims it's a reliable source:
If true this is of course annoying, but hardly surprising. All it means is that the D'backs would have to pull Owings back from waivers until after the season is over and complete the trade then. Even with his shoulder soreness, it would have been nice to have Owings here for the remaining 40 games or so. But considering the Reds' history with pitchers and injuries, he might be best left in Arizona's care. Less poking. Less Poling.
I guess we could use this space to continue discussing the trade now that another piece of it has been revealed. Of course, any colorful epithets you'd like to add to your fondest memories of Leatherpants would also be welcome below.

So what happens now?
Will they try to pass someone else through waivers to send to us? Owings was probably the better of the Ps to be NL so this is a real kick in the knickers.

Owings can still come to the Reds
but we’d have to wait until the offseason when waivers no longer apply. Annoying, but not the end of the world.

wow
So the Best D_ Sports Show is doing some sort of Best D_ All Time Baseball Team thing where their panel of brilliant minds chooses a player at each position. I tuned in just in time for second base where their pool of choices consisted of Joe Morgan, Ryan Sandberg (!), Robbie Alomar (!) and Jackie Robinson. Zero mention of Rogers Hornsby. So I turned it off and rushed to the internet to complain to anyone who will listen.

I know, right?
The funny thing is they had a scroll bar at the bottom showing the top second basemen by various statistics and of course Hornsby was rocking the shit like Michael Phelps. By the way I tried to George Grande the show’s title above with asterisks and I ended up with that weird italization. Let that be a lesson to those who want to mark the steroids era. Imma get some more beer.

Yeah, Hornsby was dominant
But let’s not overlook the important legs provided by Jim Bottomley and Howard Freigau, and particularly the amazing work done by Jimmy Cooney to anchor the team. Hornsby couldn’t have done it without those guys.

Dear Jim Bowden
What, really, is the point of your existence on this earth? To annoy us already pathetic Reds fans? Go away, permanently.
As for Owings, meh. We’d probably screw him up much worse if was here. Let him get healthy. ain’t really gonna matter the rest of the way and maybe we can get some guys in Louisville more work up here.

I'm not going to pull out the CBA or anything, but
I think Trent is wrong here. The waiver order is set by order of finish last season. There were six teams with a worse record than the Reds last season. However, the waiver order is by league, so a player would have to clear the entire National League before an AL team could be awarded a claim. The NL teams with a worse record than the Reds last year were the Marlins, Pirates, and Giants. One of those teams is the culprit.
Unless I’ve misunderstood the rules or they’ve changed recently.

I don't think that's correct
Last year’s standings are only used during first month of the season.
After that, the current standings are used.
At least, so sayeth Wikipedia:
If a player is waived, any team may claim him. If more than one team claims the player from waivers, the team with the weakest record in the player’s league gets preference. If no team in the player’s league claims him, the claiming team with the weakest record in the other league gets preference. In the first month of the season, preference is determined using the previous year’s standings.

Leatherpants
For someone who is facing impending unemployment and is already hated by most of his industry, pulling stunts like this is probably not the greatest idea.
But you know what, that’s why he is who he is.

Go figure
If he were president, John McCain would have gone to war with Russia three days ago. Apparently that is not sufficiently scary for enough people.

I think McCain would rather, he if could, go to war against Georgia...
Not the former Russian state, but Georgia as in Ray Charles. That way he could actually win.

This doesn't relate
Here’s why I’m an idiot.
My wife scored tickets to obama’s acceptance speech in the DSCC box. pretty sweet. I’m a supporter, but beyond that, I’m a history/government/political buff.
I am looking at an out of town job that I’m pretty excited about. So, thinking that his speech was on the 21st (next week), I scheduled the interview for the 28th.
Come to find out today, the speech is the 28th. Instead of seeing somethign that people will be talking about for a generation or so (well, hopefully, from my perspective), I’m going to be wedged between two fatasses on an airplane back to Denver.
Sorry. I just had to share.

You have to give an interview so great that it will be remembered for a generation or so.

I just realized that you were talking about looking for a 3 BR house for $175k a couple of days ago and I never tried to sell you my 4BR/2bath house with a 2-car oversized garage. Do you want it?
I’m more a hello man and a welcome man than a good-bye man. And to me Adam Dunn was more a person than a player.

"scored tickets to obama's acceptance speech"
this made me laugh. when i think of “scoring” tickets, i think of something like bad brains or the shins. this just further bolsters obama’s mythological status as a rock star.

Last year, MLS had bands from each town record a song for their team
They picked Bad Brains to do DC United’s. I listen to it before every game. “What’s the dealio with Luciano Emilio?”
Ok, they’ve had better lyrics, but it’s still cool.
