Edinson Volquez vs Jeff Karstens

Partly cloudy. Winds blowing out to center field at 5-10 m.p.h. Game Time temperature: Around 75.

Complete Coverage >

W-L ERA WHIP K BB
2008 - Edinson Volquez 13-5 2.93 1.33 141 63

W-L ERA WHIP K BB
2008 - Jeff Karstens 2-0 0.00 0.80 6 5

Karstens came to Pittsburgh as part of the Xavier Nady deal with the Yankees and has yet to give up a run to the inferior National League.  Volquez came to the Reds in a deal for Josh Hamilton.  Hamilton > Nady, therefore Volquez > Karstens, right?

As a team the Reds are batting .218/.279/.380 in August, but they just traded that do nothing cancer Adam Dunn.  Small ball will rule the day and the Reds will score 10 runs tonight.  Bank it.

lucky you

I’m more a hello man and a welcome man than a good-bye man. And to me Adam Dunn was more a person than a player.

i know!

I get to miss the Pirates and reds. I don’t want to watch, but I know that if I’m home, I’ll wind up watching it.

Fuck this noise

I’m going to go watch soccer.

Who's playing?

US men’s team doesn’t play until 5AM tomorrow morning, I thought.

DC United was hosting the New England Revolution

in the semifinals of the US Open Cup. It’s the oldest tournament in American soccer, and the winner gets a berth in the regional Champions League. DCU beat New England 3-1 behind a brace from Luciano Emilio. Good to see the Reds won, but I had a great fucking time at the game, and feel like I made the right decision.

You probably did.

The U.S. men’s team lost this morning too. Orozco got a red card in the 3rd minute, so we were playing short the whole game. It felt like watching a Reds game! (Zing!)

So, I guess Dickerson gets first this thread.

In case you were wondering

the hotheads at Fay’s blog have already turned their ire to EdE. They won’t stop until the entire team is made up of Jeff Keppinger.

I really hate sharing my rooting interest with those dolts.

Why can’t they find a team that isn’t the Reds?

And they LOOOVE them some Rosales. Ugh.

So take a good look at this lineup

... and then tell me what the 2009 Opening Day lineup will look like. This isn’t it, is it?

Wow.

This could end up being pretty damn unwatchable.

- Dickerson leading off in his ML debut.
- Kepp still at the top of the order.
- BP still cleaning up.
- LLM BATTING 5TH.
- “K”orey in the lineup.
- Maybe we’ll get good Wagon? Maybe not?

But good for him. I’m glad someone in the Reds clubhouse is happy to be there.

Seeing that lineup

Blech. Seriously.

How can such a good looking man be so bad at getting to first base?

by jch24 on Aug 12, 2008 5:25 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I guess playing Hanigan again would have made too much sense.

At least this lineup has a good righty/lefty flow, which, as we all know, is the key component to winning baseball.

A serious question for the braintrust

With the money the Reds cleared (in theory) by making the moves they have, what do you guys think happens?

Do you think they make a run at one of the big fish and horribly overpay (CC, Tex), do they overpay for a middle-of-the-road guy (Burrell), or do they sign low-level free agents to plug the holes and hope for the best?

How can such a good looking man be so bad at getting to first base?

by jch24 on Aug 12, 2008 5:30 PM EDT   0 recs

They'll probably have to overpay

to get a big name free agent.

If they pay big bucks for Pat Burrell, we’ll only have one question left for Walt Jocketty: whether he prefers Sartre or Camus.

I don't see them going after Burrell

or any other name FA. None of them feel like the kind of guy that makes our leadership drool.

by ken on Aug 12, 2008 6:37 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

am i mistaken

in remembering that a few years ago, Burrell was only interested in going to Boston or NY? maybe he’ll follow the dollar signs this offseason, but the Mets look like a good fit for him. just my opinion.

by Charlie Scrabbles on Aug 12, 2008 6:49 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Haven't heard that before

Though it’s certainly possible he said something like that. The Mets would be a good fit for sure. Over the past year or so he’s really sounded like he wants to stay in Philly, a few grumblings about defensive replacements aside. It could all be fluff to help get the fans and media off his back, but Philly is also one of the few teams that will be able to afford him this winter and have a need for him. Plus he’s played with the core guys for several years and gets along well with everyone. The devil you know ….

by ken on Aug 12, 2008 7:02 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Camus can do, but Sartre is smarter

Well, Scooby-Doo can do-do, but Jimmy Carter is smarter.

by RedHotHollywood on Aug 12, 2008 6:36 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Honestly

what they do with the money “saved” by the recent moves will say a lot about whether this is a real rebuilding project or a half-assed one.

This is where Castellini would worry me. I hope Jocketty plans on a real rebuild and that Bob and the ticket office stay out of his way.

and that’s a biiig “IF,” then I think he might be a little out of whack for the market.

But if he let that be known to the club, then there might be a decent reason to trade him. But why after the deadline?

Everybody's a jerk. You. Me. This jerk.

by andromache on Aug 12, 2008 6:49 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

my thoughts exactly

he thinks this rotation with its +5.00 ERA is a backbone of a good team? i guess we can be thankful we pay him to pitch and not manage.

by Charlie Scrabbles on Aug 12, 2008 6:51 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I don't think this was intended to make Dunn look bad

Asking for $100 million for player like himself isn’t out of the question for some teams.

But it clearly is for the Reds and given that Jocketty doesn’t do contract negotiations in season AND knew he’d never sign him, the trade makes sense. The timing seems odd, but I think it makes some sense.

by bengalred on Aug 12, 2008 6:50 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

i think its a tad high, but not exorbitent

i mean, he’s all of 28 years old. Carlos Lee is a decent comp and he was 3 years older when he got his big cash deal. 120 is too much, but i wouldnt be surprised if he got 100.

by Charlie Scrabbles on Aug 12, 2008 6:55 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I wasn't speaking to this particular article

but more generally.

Quotes like Arroyo’s will be used to say that Dunn was just another of those money-grubbing modern athletes who don’t know how to play the game with passion, blah, blah, blah
