Game 120: Reds at Pirates
Cincinnati Reds at Pittsburgh Pirates, Aug 12, 2008 7:05 PM EDT
|
|
|
Karstens came to Pittsburgh as part of the Xavier Nady deal with the Yankees and has yet to give up a run to the inferior National League. Volquez came to the Reds in a deal for Josh Hamilton. Hamilton > Nady, therefore Volquez > Karstens, right?
As a team the Reds are batting .218/.279/.380 in August, but they just traded that do nothing cancer Adam Dunn. Small ball will rule the day and the Reds will score 10 runs tonight. Bank it.

DC United was hosting the New England Revolution
in the semifinals of the US Open Cup. It’s the oldest tournament in American soccer, and the winner gets a berth in the regional Champions League. DCU beat New England 3-1 behind a brace from Luciano Emilio. Good to see the Reds won, but I had a great fucking time at the game, and feel like I made the right decision.

You probably did.
The U.S. men’s team lost this morning too. Orozco got a red card in the 3rd minute, so we were playing short the whole game. It felt like watching a Reds game! (Zing!)

- Dickerson leading off in his ML debut.
- Kepp still at the top of the order.
- BP still cleaning up.
- LLM BATTING 5TH.
- “K”orey in the lineup.
- Maybe we’ll get good Wagon? Maybe not?

Seeing that lineup
Blech. Seriously.
How can such a good looking man be so bad at getting to first base?
I guess playing Hanigan again would have made too much sense.
At least this lineup has a good righty/lefty flow, which, as we all know, is the key component to winning baseball.
this lineup would be so all up ons
if they could get rid of EdE. dude is just not clutch.

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
A serious question for the braintrust
With the money the Reds cleared (in theory) by making the moves they have, what do you guys think happens?
Do you think they make a run at one of the big fish and horribly overpay (CC, Tex), do they overpay for a middle-of-the-road guy (Burrell), or do they sign low-level free agents to plug the holes and hope for the best?
How can such a good looking man be so bad at getting to first base?
They'll probably have to overpay
to get a big name free agent.
If they pay big bucks for Pat Burrell, we’ll only have one question left for Walt Jocketty: whether he prefers Sartre or Camus.

I don't see them going after Burrell
or any other name FA. None of them feel like the kind of guy that makes our leadership drool.
am i mistaken
in remembering that a few years ago, Burrell was only interested in going to Boston or NY? maybe he’ll follow the dollar signs this offseason, but the Mets look like a good fit for him. just my opinion.
by Charlie Scrabbles on Aug 12, 2008 6:49 PM EDT up reply actions
Haven't heard that before
Though it’s certainly possible he said something like that. The Mets would be a good fit for sure. Over the past year or so he’s really sounded like he wants to stay in Philly, a few grumblings about defensive replacements aside. It could all be fluff to help get the fans and media off his back, but Philly is also one of the few teams that will be able to afford him this winter and have a need for him. Plus he’s played with the core guys for several years and gets along well with everyone. The devil you know ….
Camus can do, but Sartre is smarter

I don't think this was intended to make Dunn look bad
Asking for $100 million for player like himself isn’t out of the question for some teams.
But it clearly is for the Reds and given that Jocketty doesn’t do contract negotiations in season AND knew he’d never sign him, the trade makes sense. The timing seems odd, but I think it makes some sense.
i think its a tad high, but not exorbitent
i mean, he’s all of 28 years old. Carlos Lee is a decent comp and he was 3 years older when he got his big cash deal. 120 is too much, but i wouldnt be surprised if he got 100.

We're getting Owings
So sayeth The Arizona Republic:
DENVER – Right-hander Micah Owings is one of the players to be named later in the deal that brought Adam Dunn to the Diamondbacks on Monday.
It’s unclear if Owings has yet to be placed on waivers. He will have to clear waivers if he is to be traded before the end of the season.
It’s possible that Owings has been placed on waivers already and was claimed by another team, at which point the Diamondbacks would have pulled him back off waivers. That would mean he would not be able to be traded until the conclusion of the regular season.
It’s also unclear is Owings’ physical condition could be a factor in the deal. He is expected to miss his start Wednesday with shoulder stiffness.

I can’t say I’m blown away. We’ve got Ryan Hanigan already (who just came up from AAA) who’s hit just as well or better at about every level, and walks more. I think if Hanigan wins the starting job, and Bako and Valentin hit the road, I’ll take Castillo as a backup, but I’d rather have a pitcher.

Anybody got a quick scouting report?
Stats don’t look too bad for a young guy.
He's gotten the label of a thrower
the guys at the Backs’ SBNation site seem to think he lacks a legit 3rd pitch, so they weren’t hopeful about him sticking at SP for too long.
As for his ballyhoo’d offensive prowess, he’s really just a free-swinger who sometimes makes contact. App’tly

From a sound source: One of the two yet to be identified players coming to the Reds in the Adam Dunn deal is Arizona pitcher Micah Owings.
The third-round pick of the Diamondbacks in 2008 was 8-8 with a 4.30 ERA in 27 starts last season, his rookie year, but has fallen on rough times this year — 6-9 in 18 starts with a 5.93 ERA.

Owings
was the player it was rumored the Yankees were getting for Randy Johnson two years ago. They really wanted him, and offered to throw in a few million extra to make it happen, but Arizona wouldn’t give him up. So they settled for Ross Ohlendorf. Who was recently dealt to the Pirates (along with Karstens and others) for Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte.

Island Update (Post Dunn, not done posting)
Back home in Santo Domingo and it is hot. I mean hot, hot. My toothpaste is runny, hot.
I have a new laptob and internet in my house. I know, it’s ridiculous. Will try to get back to updating y’all more often with a perspective from the DR. Here goes…
Hoy and the Listin Diaro both ran the same AP story on the front page of their websites this morning about Vólquez winning his 14th on the season. Nothing special really in the article but the first sentence kind of sums up things these days:
Edinson Vólquez trabajó hasta la séptima para salir del estupor en que se encontraba luego del Juego de Estrellas, para llevar a los Rojos de Cincinnati a una victoria de 5-1 sobre los Piratas de Pittsburgh, en su primer partido desde que canjearon a Adam Dunn.
Edinson Vólquez worked until the seventh to leave the stupor he had found himself in after the All-Star game to carry the Reds to a 5-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates in their first game since they traded Adam Dunn.
The big sports news around here is olympic boxing though. Juan Carlos Payano is a big medal hope for the DR. He beat Frenchman Jerome Thomas yesterday and is up against an Italian in the second round. Two other Dominican boxers, Félix Manuel Díaz y Argenis Núñez, are also potential contenders for medals. It is a bit different when your country is pinning its hopes on two or three athletes to bring home a few medals. In the United States it seems you have to be trying to win 8 gold medals for anyone to care about you.
Tanzen!
