Adam Dunn continues to be gone
Threads are getting clogged, much like Adam Dunn used to clog the bases for the Reds. *sniff* For old time's sake, lets take a walk down memory lane for some great Adam Dunn threads in history. I'm sure I've missed some, so please drop a link in the thread and I'll add it to the list.
More than anything, Dunn brought out the sabermetrician in each of us. That's evident here, here, and here. Menace adds this one to the list.
Few were as passionate about the subject of Adam Dunn as BLee2525. His fun with numbers series bears that out (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3).
No list about Dunn would be complete without mentioning the entire set of Michael Diaries. There are over 20 classic diatribes by our old buddy, and all have been bundled up in this beautiful set.
Here's a thread about the day Brandon Phillips signed his contract this year. Surprisingly it devolved into a discussion about Dunn. That's unusual.
There are obviously others, but that's a start. What's your favorite?

And on the day I turn into an officer on the FB app, the player I spend 90% of my time there defending gets traded. Irony.

I honestly do not know why I should watch the Reds the rest of the year
Dunn is my favorite Red. I’m not willing to use past-tense yet. I can’t imagine why the Reds would trade their only offensive threat, let alone one who actually seemed to like it here. They better get the Jesus twins (Cool and Gay) in return or this is absolutely worthless.
As I said to my friend who broke the trade to me: “I mean, from a purely fan position, Walt Jocketty has just joined Vladimir Putin on the “people I want to waterboard” list.

My favorite, too
But given that Jocketty clearly wasn’t going to sign him, and didn’t seem interested in him going to arb, this trade probably won’t be that bad. Certainly not in the league of the Trade. Depending on who the super-secret additions to this deal are, it’s probably better than the two comp picks.
The Reds are running out of bogeyman to blame their losing on. Dunn gets a shot to prove he can help a winner. I am dismayed at the glee and tastelessness from the Reds and assorted media that accompanied his going, but this trade will probably be one we could reasonably defend.

I'm wondering when we get to know the other players too.
And, why nobody in the media has mentioned this. None of them give a flying fuck about who we’re getting in exchange for Dunn. They’d rather dwell on the past when he was here, and talk about his contribution to Arizona than talk about where the team goes from here. Typical WLW/Enquirer.

ESPN

Oh, and Jocketty got Dan Haren-ed on that deal. Dunn would have been a type A free agent, and Dallas Buck’s minor-league numbers are entirely unremarkable. The two PTBNLs can’t be that good. So, Jocketty gave up two first-round picks for three dubious prospects, instead of just keeping the high picks. AZ gives up nothing, keeps Dunn, and gets the picks if he walks.

Specifically, shutting down Harang for the rest of the season. Perhaps going to a 6 man rotation to reduce Volquez and Cueto’s innings?

Bring back Tom Shearn.
It seems universal that the guys who hated Dunn really liked Tom Shearn. Let’s just show ‘em how winning a Shearn-y Dunn-less team can be.
Everybody's a jerk. You. Me. This jerk.
September's not too far away
Who can come up? Homer. Shearn and Lehr can show us the stuff they used to not get out Korean minor leaguers. Livingston? Is Belisle around?
I don’t know if you need to go to a six man rotation. I would advocate keeping Volquez and Cueto on pitch counts. Since we’ll have relievers like Herrera and Roenicke up, that should help out any additional stress on the pen. Dusty will never go for this, so whatever.
by Brendanukkah on Aug 12, 2008 12:11 AM EDT up reply actions
If he's available, why not try him out
Everyone here has been curious how his stuff will do against major league hitters. Now’s as good a time as any to find out. But if I were to bring him up, I think I’d only want to give him one start. Give him a taste of the bigs. I really don’t think he’s ready yet, but give him a taste and see exactly where he’s at. Then work him hard in Spring Training, and maybe we’ll have ourselves something.

I agree on pitch counts
IMO either keep them on 5-days or shut them down completely with a detailed program for the next month and half. The latter is only preferable if either of them has a small, nagging injury of some description.

We'd have to trade for him
Shearn signed with the Twins when he came back from Korea, and is currently playing for the Rochester Red Wings.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
innings barriers
I don’t see a pressing need to shut down Volquez or Cueto. Volquez threw 178 professional innings last year. He’s at 138 now. Cueto threw 161 last year and is at 140 now. The thinking now is you don’t want a player to throw 30 innings more than he has previously. Of course care should be taken all around.
I have no idea as to Harang.
I want to use Harang
to see if it is muscular or if it is his tendon. If he does have a torn tendon the sooner he goes under the knife the sooner he will be back, and at this point that would be 2010, maybe some relief work next year. I am not predicting he needs surgery, but I would rather know now than next Spring.

Getting Dunn a smart move by Diamondbacks
Monday, August 11, 2008 | Feedback | Print Entry
Arizona ranks 10th in the National League in OBP, 10th in slugging and, not coincidentally, 10th in runs scored, despite playing in a pretty good hitters’ park. Their left fielders have hit .235/.308/.387 - but hey, Eric Byrnes has just two years left on his deal! - and their right fielders have hit .252/.339/.418 (including Justin Upton’s outstanding start to the season).
I understand the Diamondbacks were looking to add a left-handed bat, but really, they just needed to add a bat, period, and they did it in a way that will address one of the weakest spots in their lineup by acquiring Adam Dunn from the Reds. The pickup was a no-brainer, and unless one of the players to be named later turns out to be right-handed pitcher Jarrod Parker, the price doesn’t appear to be too high for a seven-week rental.
In the short term, Dunn fills the right field hole vacated by Upton, who has been out for a month with an oblique injury. When Upton returns, however, the D-backs will have to choose between sitting Upton or Chad Tracy. Upton has been an offensive zero since mid-May, but is going to be one of the top hitters in the game in a few years and needs to get his at bats in at the big league level. Tracy has outhit Upton this year, but is 28 and has no upside and a below-average bat for first base. Sitting Tracy would allow Arizona to return Conor Jackson to first base, creating a better defensive alignment.
The one prospect we know of who is going back to Cincinnati is Dallas Buck, who was the best prospect in the Cape Cod League in 2004 as a rising sophomore, but who saw his stuff slip under heavy usage at Oregon State and ended up having Tommy John surgery in 2007. Buck is 10 starts into his return, too early to make any judgments about whether he’ll be the 87-88 mph sinkerballer he’d become by the time he was drafted or the 91-94 mph sinkerballer he was before he wore down. He’s still generating groundballs and throwing strikes, so even throwing in the upper 80s he has big-league value, and makes sense for the Reds as a prospect with some upside due to his injury status.
The Reds were looking at getting two draft picks for Dunn if he departed as a free agent, with zero risk of him accepting an arbitration offer; at the least, they will end up with three prospects rather than two, all of who are already in pro ball and closer to the majors than the two players they might select in next June’s amateur draft.
But those two draft picks
could both be of better quality than the three we get from Arizona. Actually, I kinda like Dallas Buck’s potential, but if he’s the best guy the Reds get in this deal, than that sucks.

I have a little theory
I think the Reds suffer from limiting the team to local ownership.
When Marge Schott had to sell the team, she had a pretty good offer on the table from the Dolans, who ended up buying the Tribe (right?). But Carl Lindner swooped in, because, OMG we couldn’t have our beloved Cincinnati Reds owned by an outsider. Never mind the fact that an outsider would have invested much more in the franchise than Lindner ever did. Don’t doubt the fact that we’re still digging out of the hole he dug.
Then Lindner decides to get out of the game and, lo and behold, he sells to another local group. A well-intentioned group, nonetheless, but another small-thinking local group.
Personally, I always thought in those situations the franchise could have really benefitted from someone who came in from the outside. Ideas tend to be a little stale in Cincinnati, especially in the pretty small boys’ club of guys rich enough to own the Reds.
Owners matter. I sorta wonder if we’d have a better team if we had a really smart owner from somewhere else.
if only mark cuban had bought the reds....

For $200+ Million
Seriously. That’s what Boras is looking for.
How can such a good looking man be so bad at getting to first base?
Which players?
I know many of you have posted your opinions on this but, if by miracle, the Reds get Scherzer out of this, in addition to Castillo or Whitesell, I can handle this trade. If the Reds only manage to get Buck, Castillo or Whitesell, and Owings…......I can still swallow the trade but not as easily.
I’m praying it’s not Peguero or Brito….........neither impress me….....and Whitesell doesn’t make sense unless we don’t sign Alonso.
I can swallow this trade if Buck continues to improve in his comeback, if Castillo is as good as that MILB article indicates, and we could get Scherzer (this would be a good return), or Owings (this would be an okay return).
We’ll see…..
Now….....on another note: does Jocketty trade Encarnacion or Phillips as well? Obviously, he doesn’t like this team’s makeup. We’ll have to wait and see, I guess.
i think Arroyo and EdE are as good as gone
i wouldnt be surprised if they pushed Cordero to accept a trade as well. i dont know about BP though. he seems like just the kind of player they would keep ahold of. this is certainly going to be an active off-season.

What's sad to me is the belief that the Reds can't afford Dunn
when they spent $48 million last off season on a player who has significantly less impact.
I’d be willing to bet by next off-season, fans will be incredibly frustrated with the offense and crying for Cordero’s head.
I’m more a hello man and a welcome man than a good-bye man. And to me Adam Dunn was more a person than a player.

Daugherty on Dunn
There are too many errors to properly fisk, but here’s a few lowlights:
Dunn was who he was: a guy who could hit a baseball 400 feet more often than almost anyone else, but couldn’t produce a two-out RBI single.
Actually, Daugherty is technically correct: Dunn hasn’t had an RBI single with two outs this year. Instead, Dunn’s been slugging in high leverage situations: .222/.462/.750/1.212 in two-out, RISP situations. Hence the lack of singles. By score, Dunn’s highest OPS comes when the Reds are two runs behind or in the lead. His other clutch stats show he’s doing as well or better than in normal situations.
Any other club could have claimed him and the trade would not have been made. None did.
FAIL. Teams with records better than Arizona, which is most contenders, did not get a chance. It should be obvious that it makes no sense to pick up Dunn if the improvement means you reach 72 rather than 70 wins. You can only question the Dodgers here, and even then a claim would’ve been strictly for defensive (block AZ) purposes.
Regardless, Dunn’s tax bracket didn’t match his production, at least not here.
I realize that this is a throwaway comment, but the highest federal income tax bracket starts around the league minimum. So all MLB players are in the same “tax bracket.”
Even with all of the bashing Daugherty is careful to never say that the Reds will be better. The seven-word summary is “Dunn sucks; we’ll see if they’re better.”
My favorite line is...
“As insignificant as Dunn was to winning here”
I love the twisted logic of Daugherty. These guys need to be more of a team. This guy sucks because he can’t do it all.
BTW, from the day Dunn was brought up until yesterday, only 4 teams allowed more runs per game than the Reds – KC, Texas, TB, and Colorado. Damnit, Dunn, why are you so insignificant?
All I’ve ever done was be Juan Pierre," he said. "I don’t know why, for some reason, they’re just sticking it to me this year."
This sounds so damn ominous, unintentionally
The standard argument was, and is, “How do you replace numbers like those?” We’re about to find out.
and
Griffey and Dunn are elsewhere. Will the Reds be better without them? Could they be any worse?
by Brendanukkah on Aug 12, 2008 10:07 AM EDT up reply actions
uh, yeah
how do 100+ losses sound, Doc?
Seriously, when 2009 Reds lose 107 games, this year will look like the fucking miracle on ice.
i dont think the Reds will be THAT bad next year
i have to believe that the likes of Voltron/Cueto/Bruce/Votto wont let it happen. Adam Dunn was the best hitter on this team, but he wasnt the difference between this 90+ loss team and a 105+ loss team. they certainly wont be good, but i dont think they will be historically bad.

Those 2-out RISP numbers are actually pretty astonishing
24 of 52 plate appearances he reached base (.462 OBP)
6 HR’s, 1 2B -> .750 SLG!
I think that the late and close line of .180/.406/.380 is what was hurting him in the public’s eye this year.

the slow death of newspapers continues
My dad emailed me the other day to say that his home delivery of the Enquirer in Portsmouth was discontinued on the 10th. It’s no longer economically viable. He tried to pick it up at a store, but no place carried it anymore. If this is the type of analysis he’s missing out on does it even matter?
Kill em all
Newspapers (especially the Enquirer) suck
People will still want information, so they’ll find different ways to get it. I say that can only be a good thing.
After a night of sleeping on it...
I’m a little more upbeat about the situation.
Yes, it pretty much defeats any chance of winning for the next 2 years or more… but it is typically easier to attain offense than pitching and Reds are finally getting a decent rotation fitted together. (assuming they remain healthy… but don’t remind me of that right now)
With no good FA PPs this offseason, I’m hoping they’ll focus more on trades and plugging holes with youth rather than blowing it all on Tex or something similar. (although a CC would be nice)
I need to take a look at the 2010 FA list now…
I'm not that upset that he was traded because I didn't think he would sign with the Reds anyway
I’m just sad to see the big guy go so suddenly. And given the frustrations that have surrounded this team for the last two weeks, it’s been like one gut punch after another. I’m actually kind of glad the Reds got a little volume out of the deal because I’m not sure I trust Jocketty’s draft history.
The thing that bothers me the most about the deal is the joy that so many outside of RR are taking in the fact that he is gone. I feel like so many people don’t have a very good perspective on the struggles of this organization. I don’t think many people realize how bad this offense will be if they can’t replace Dunn with a significant bat.
I’m more a hello man and a welcome man than a good-bye man. And to me Adam Dunn was more a person than a player.

They don't have a clue
Our offense is nowhere close to sufficient… It was already league worst as it was… and they somehow think that playing MORE small ball will get us back to winning baseball?
That’s why I hope that WJ (who has a history of getting some big bats) will be able to pick up guys to make up for the loss of Dunn… but it’s not happening anytime soon for a price worth paying.

My problem
(actually, I have many, but only one pertaining to this deal)
Once again, it’s not the trade, but the return.
It wasn’t just that Kearns and Lopez were traded, but that we got zero in return (and don’t throw Thompson at me – it’s now been 2 years, and he’s still had zero impact on this team).
I wasn’t disappointed at all to see Jr. go – no one in this organization had the balls to stand up to him and tell him he wasn’t any good any more, so it was better to move him. However, everyone thought the Reds would either get a decent prospect or salary relief; they got neither.
Now this – the DBacks needed Dunn; absolutely had to have him to hold off the Dodgers. We get a guy coming off TJS (to answer my question from the previous thread, Mo Rivera looks like the only pitcher to have a good career after TJS), plus 2 PTBNL…but we have to throw in cash. Were they that desparate to get rid of him? What’s worse, is that enough people will forget about the deal that in a few months when those PTBNL are actually N’ed (and found to be non-entities), there will be no big uproar that we traded away one of the best hitters in the game for 3 crappy prospects.
In sum, it’s just furthers my frustration with this team. I now know what my buddy the Bengals fan has gone through the past 15 years.

Returns
Definitely agree about The Trade. With Dunn I think we need to see who the PTBNLs are first, but you’re right that we should’ve been bargaining from a position of strength given Arizona’s tenuous hold on the West. As for Buck, I’m not worried so much about TJS. Tom Gordon, Joakim Soria and Jon Lieber come to mind as other guys who’ve had success post-surgery, and I’m sure there are plenty of others. Mo may be the only pitcher with a HOF career post-TJS, but plenty have resumed decent careers after the surgery.
With Griffey, I’m not sure we should have expected a decent prospect given how he’s played this year. We did obtain some monetary relief, even if it wasn’t a complete offloading of his contract.
I believe sidnancy
was referring to his original post about pitchers who had TJS before their major league careers actually started. I’d bet there are others besides Mo Rivera and the Mexicutioner, but Lieber and Gordon wouldn’t count in this instance.
I think we’re likely to see more as younger pitchers come to view TJS as a boon to their careers rather than a last resort.

Are you serious?
A boon? The road is littered with quality prospects who had TJS and were done, while we’ve mentioned 2 who’ve had success (one for what, 3 months?).
Often wrong, never uncertain.
That wasn't the article I was referring to
but it says the same thing essentially.
So now, that I’ve read two “light interest” articles and part of a book on this subject, I’m a damned expert. Watch out.

I had heard the same thing
From a couple of people here and there. Parent of teenagers inquiring about TJS in the hopes it propels Lil’ Johnny to baseball stardom. Insane.
How can such a good looking man be so bad at getting to first base?
Of course I'm serious
But I wasn’t mentioning it approvingly.
There was an article in either SI or NYT last off-season discussing the rising number of high school pitchers, their families and coaches inquiring into TJS surgery and other ligament work. The surgery is also being performed with more frequency in Latin American countries.
The much publicized success of the recovery and the breathless testimonials from certain players about increased velocity and feeling better than before (both fishy) leads to false impressions about its efficacy. In a medical climate in which high school girls are getting boob jobs, it can hardly be surprising that some overeager athletes (and their parents) are getting this surgery.
Anecdotally, a friend of mine whose brother is a head coach at a juco in Alabama has had 2 pitchers in his short time there that have had TJS (both 20 years old). So, we are bound to be a few more Joakim Soria’s, for better or worse.

Just catching up on C. Trent's blog
He notes something that I had not heard, and that is that Jocketty is in the Dominican Republic right now. I find it interesting that the GM is away when the biggest move of the season goes down. I have nothing at all to support this, but it seems an awful lot like an initiation rite for Bavasi. “Welcome to the Reds, son. Now axe the best player on the team.” Again, I haven’t read anything to support this, or seen Bavasi’s name even mentioned during any of this; I’m just looking for goats and reasons to hate.
Oh, and there’s this illuminating quote from Dusty:
“David slew Goliath, you know. We just have to see. You guys ask me questions, I don’t really have any more answers to,” Baker said.
I think the fact that Dunn gets traded two days after Bavasi got hired is a pretty ominous sign.

So
It looks like Dickerson is getting the call – no surprise there – but Doug Gray also sees evidence that Drew Stubbs is getting bumped to Louisville. Makes sense since Stubbs is next in line for CF. He’s hit well in Chattanooga (.315/.400/.402), albeit in just 92 ABs. I wonder if we’ll see Stubbs in Cincinnati in September? Not that he deserves it, but it could give an indication as to whether they need to seek a CF in the off-season.

Given the trade of Adam Dunn for three minor leaguers, it may look like the Reds in full long-term, rebuilding mode.
But Bob Castellini didn’t hesitate when asked if he thought the team could win next year:
“Absolutely.”
That’s going to take some doing. Because the only thing the Reds have done so far in the rebuilding job is demolition. Ken Griffey Jr., David Ross and Dunn have been jettisoned. The Reds have gotten role players and minor leaguers in return.
Castellini said the Dunn trade was not a reaction to the way the team has played lately.
"It might look that way, but we’ve been trying to improve the club constantly,” Castellini said. “This was a very hasty process, this trade came together in the last couple of days. We’re doing the best we can to get better."
The Reds have lost nine out of their last 10 games.
“We’ve been terrible,” Castellini said.
Is he out of his fucking mind?

I think in the offseason
the Reds will end up signing Pat Burrell, whoi s basically a four-years older, righthanded version of Adam Dunn. And then when the Reds lose 90+ next year, Burrell will be the new whipping boy for all the yahoos at WLW.
We should be proactive in this.
RR should send Burrell a message stating all the reasons why he shouldn’t sign with the Reds. Include in it all of the Marty rants and that atrocious WLW sendoff. He signs with someone else, everybody wins. If he signed here, it would be bad for both sides.

JAYYYYY TEEEEE EMMMMMMMMMMMM
I’m more a hello man and a welcome man than a good-bye man. And to me Adam Dunn was more a person than a player.
Let’s face it.
The blame for this team’s poor performance doesn’t lie with Griffey’s lack of production, or Dunn’s high strike out numbers.
To me, it’s Dusty Baker.
Why did he insisted on batting Cory Patterson leadoff with an OBP less than his weight?
Why did he insisted on living in the past by batting Griffey third or fourth? You can live with that kind of production from an outfielder in the 7 hole, not in the 3 or 4.
Why did he refuse to teach Jay Bruce a lesson and sit his ass on the bench the game after he half-assed it in the outfield and dropped a ball and also stupidly ran the Reds out of an inning on the basepaths? (He should have pulled him from the game immediately.)
Why would he put Dunn in the outfield if the guy has no earthly idea what a glove was used for? (Remember a few years ago, the Rangers were too afraid of Soriano to ask him to move to the outfield since he sucked at 2B, so they traded him and it took someone like Frank Robinson with the balls to say, “son, you play outfield or you don’t play.)
You can trash Jockety all you want, but the man has rings. He’s built a winner. Who’s to say he won’t build another one here? Jockety didn’t sign Eric MIlton. Jockety didn’t sign Bronson Arroyo. Jockety didn’t sign Cordero.
The Dunn trade pisses me off only if the players we get back are Dallas Buck quality and less. But we don’t know who the other two players are.
It’s not THAT hard to replace a guy with his production. Carlos Quinten was had for a song last off season. So was Milton Bradley. They are out there. And cheaper.
It was different with Griffey. I mean, Jockety didn’t trade the 2001 Griffey, He traded the 2008 Griffey. And, as painful as it might be, that Griffey was worth just about what they got for him.
I’m not a Jockety apologist. I just say, let the thing play out.
This team wasn’t going anywhere this year with Dunn. It’s not going anywhere without him.

We Received Nothing...
..in return. A 23 year old A pitcher? This is not a trade. It is an insult.
The front office and ownership caved into the local double-digit IQ sports radio callers and their mandarin of baseball illiteracy Bill Cunningham. These people wouldn’t understand the difference between on-base percentage and slugging percentage if it hit them over the head. But Ryan Freel tries so hard. He “plays the game the way it’s supposed to be played….[with a trailer park drawl] If only left fielders were gold glovers and didn’t strike out 180 times and hit for a high average. We’d win a world championship. 900 OPS? Never hurd of ‘dat!”
I cannot believe I have followed this team my whole life, to watch it come to this. I still remember these people calling the shows back in the late 1980s, angry that Eric Davis was hurt or not hitting over .300 or playing as well as Willie Mays. I hate to say it, but this organization and fan base have become a palace of fools.
Well, Adam Dunn Haters...
You got what you wanted. Now enjoy the slide, as our team continues to lose. Oh, but they’ll have good fundamentals and will hustle, and they’ll ground out, instead of striking out, in between the 40 home runs, 100 walks, 100 RBIs a year. Ignorance is bliss. Who knows, maybe we can re-sign Paul Householder or Duane Walker. They played the game with passion, you know.
