Report: Dunn Traded to Diamondbacks

From 620 KTAR

Sports 620 KTAR's John Gambadoro reports the Arizona Diamondbacks have acquired outfielder Adam Dunn from the Cincinnati Reds.

The Diamondbacks have Monday off, but start a NL West series in Colorado on Tuesday night.

Dunn is expected to start in right field.

The Diamondbacks are giving up three prospects in the deal, minor league pitcher Dallas Buck and two other players to be named later.

Dunn has 32 home runs in 2008 with 74 RBI. His average this season is .233. He has 270 home runs in his career, currently in his eighth Major League season, spending his entire career in Cincinnati.

Dunn has hit 40 or more home runs the past four seasons and is on pace to eclipse that mark again this season. He has also struck out 165 times or more in those seasons, currently with 120 this season.

The Diamondbacks will now have three of the top five strikeout leaders in the National League. Mark Reynolds is second with 147 and Chris Young is third with 122.

Throughout his career in the big leagues Dunn has played either corner outfield position while also getting some time in at first base. He has not played first base since the 2006 season and that was only in two games.

Wow. I'm stunned.  I know I shouldn't be, but for me Adam Dunn was the only reason left why I wanted to watch when I made the 3 hour drive over.  Looks like the one player we know we got hasn't played much this year.

Let's hope we got 3 good prospects.

by Pops Daniels on Aug 11, 2008 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sure

Once he goes through waivers, if a team puts in a claim, he “belongs” to that team unless the Reds pull him back. They can’t then make him available to someone else (that would be termed “shenanigans” in the CBA).

Often wrong, never uncertain.

I think we had to.

Once Arizona (or any team) claims him off waivers, either (1) they have to trade him, or (2) pull him back. There is no (3).

You Gotta be kidding me...

I am all about sending Dunn away for an Ace pitcher. Somebody to anchor our staff with Volquez in the future.

BUT, we get a fucking pitcher who has already had Tommy John before he was even fucking drafted?

by blark0202 on Aug 11, 2008 3:12 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

The problem with that strategy is that you have to find another club willing to give you their ace pitcher

When you’re in the toilet, everyone knows you’re looking to start over and the guy you’re trying to deal is about to walk, those offers are really hard to find.

by bengalred on Aug 11, 2008 3:14 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

True. Maybe not an Ace as in already established. But you can’t tell me Dallas Buck is a future ace. He may be, but I don’t see how you can make it even with Dunn.

Unless those two to be named are something great, we got hosed. For somebody with the output in homeruns he is putting out this season, we should have got more, imo. Dunn’s trade value was at it’s peak right now.

by blark0202 on Aug 11, 2008 3:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This trade, coupled with the Griffey trade,

indicates that they’re just dumping salary to be players in the FA market. I’m sure they’re disappointed Juan Pierre won’t be out there.

Let's call a spade a shovel here.

Marty isn’t a big time announcer. Otherwise he wouldn’t work for a shitty AM radio station and call games for a lower-tier shitass baseball organization. You can compare Dunn to Carlos Lee if you want, but for my money, Vin Scully is a big time announcer. Marty Brennaman is no Vin Scully.

I’ve listened to Marty since I was a kid and I’ve enjoyed most of it, but it’s like when you become an adult and realize your parents are full of shit. That’s how I feel right now.

holy crap
Dunn, making $13 million this season, will be a free agent at the end of 2008, and it appears unlikely that the D-Backs would bid for his services since Byrnes is expected to reclaim left field in 2009, the second year of his three-year deal.

Dunn is owed about $4 million for the rest of the year, and the money is expected to be split between Cincinnati and the D-Backs.

Dallas Buck, from John Sickels's book
Elbow troubles dogged Dallas Buck at Oregon State in 2006. He pitched through it, earning a spot as a third round pick. He took the mound in 2007 and pitched well in the first half of the year, but the pain returned and he eventually capitulated to the inevitable and had Tommy John surgery. When healthy, Buck has a 90 MPH fastball, a good slider and a changeup, though the injury cut into both his velocity and command last year. We need to see how rehab goes. Grade C until we find out.

He’s pitched 50 innings in 10 starts this year with a 3.55 ERA. He’s struck out 4.97 per 9, walked 1.95 per 9 and allowed 1.07 HR/9 this season in low A ball, with one start in high-A.

All I’ve ever done was be Juan Pierre," he said. "I don’t know why, for some reason, they’re just sticking it to me this year."

I can't imagine it will be anything good

It can’t be their first-rounder this year, since draftees can’t be traded for a year, and PTBNL’s have to be named in 6 months.

It can’t be Scherzer, since he’s on the ML roster.

If it was somebody like Jarrod Parker, why wouldn’t he just be announced?

Upon further review

it might be Parker.

Apparently, he didn’t sign until the deadline last season, so he wouldn’t be eligible to be traded until August 15th. If that’s the case, I’m slightly less pissed that I was. Parker’s a stud.

I think this NEEDS to happen now.

Pay him Pat Burrell money. Fuck it, we need Yonder ASAP.

I think at this point

its not necessary that it happens now. This year is a lost cause. next year seems to be shaping up that way too. Prospects are such a crap shoot if he wants a ton of money id let him go back to school. id prefer to spend it on major league talent to fill out our roster opposed to a guy who has never seen a professional pitch. and your only losing out on time because you get the pick back next year. this team doesnt look like it has an ability to win anytime soon anyway. Im praying for a HUGE offseason

My initial reaction was, "aw, crap."

Unless the two PTBNL are stellar, I don’t like this a bit. I’d just as soon have had two high draft choices. I’ll reserve my opinion until the deal is complete. Arizona as a stacked system, so the potential to land two strong players is there, especially since the Reds kicked money in on the deal.

As for Dallas Buck, I never particularly was a fan of his, but this might not be as bad as it looks. TJ isn’t nearly as dooming as what it once was and it Buck has learned how to become a better pitcher since he lost some of his velocity. His fastball has more sink than it once did and his slider and change are average. I’m not saying he can get by throwing in the mid-80s by any means, but upper 80s and knowing how to pitch can go a long way.

Buck’s numbers, other than Ks, are impressive in the minors. Even though the Midwest League is a pitcher’s league, remember, he was outstanding in the High-A California League, which is a hitter’s paradise.

Buck was a certain first-rounder until he came up with dead arm his final year at Oregon State and slipped to the third round. He’s athletic (played safety at Oregon State) and is a competitor.

Unfortunately, he can’t hit 40 HRs or drive in 100 every year. I don’t see anyone out there available who can.

Buck

Where would you rank him right now in our system? Outside the top 10?

How to have a fire sale.

Note to Jockety:

Usually when you have a fire sale and decide to start over, you get quality players in return. Like the Marlins. Not crap, like you just did.

The round table of idiots appearing on WLW this afternoon:

The Fay, Grande, Daugherty.

Stay tuned, kids.

George Grande?

I’m sure we’ll hear about how great of a guy Dallas Buck is, and how catchers love to catch him, and how Dallas Buck’s parents are standup Americans or some other such Leave It To Beaver horseshit.

Phone's ringing, Dude.

Dallas Buck

would have been a first round draft pick before TJ surgery.

He probably isn’t to Max Scherzer or Jarrod Parker’s level, but he WAS one of our better young pitching prospects.

Pilgrimage

Should I still make the effort to fly to Cincy for a 3-game series next year?

Hmm...

They’re saying on WLW that the other two players may need to clear waivers before they’re traded, which means they’re on the 40-man. Interesting if it’s true.

No and No

I’m sure our GM knows the rule book and understands where the picks would have been had we let Dunn just walk. So we wouldn’t settle for that cheap. However teh DBacks know the rules too so they know any Prospect they give up can be replenished by those picks.

Only an idiot would reach for what he is given

Jocketty is not an idiot so he can clearly not choose the PTBNL in front of him. But Byrnes knows that Jocketty is not an idiot. He would have been counting on it. So Jocketty clearly can not choose the PTBNL in front of Byrnes.

Inconceivable!

Jocketty should never have started a land war in Asia.

What were they thinking?

I can’t believe they couldn’t even get Micah Owings for Dunn.

I mean, they got rid of Griffey for anything they could get. I understand that. But Dunn is still productive, in spite of the strike outs.

by MyScreenNameIsKevin on Aug 11, 2008 4:00 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

He would have

had to pass through waivers, theres no chance of that

by kennythered on Aug 11, 2008 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Why not?

If Dunn could pass waivers, why not Owings?

And if that’s the case, why not make the deal 12 days ago when he didn’t have to pass waivers?

Just read a rule book

He is cheap, teams would want to block the trade, and maybe even some teams would claim him and try to trade for him.

Besides

Owings sucks, there whispers of Ankiel going around.

He's a good hitter for a pitcher.

But he’s not a good hitter for an OF. Ton of power, super-competitive, but a true free-swinger. Especially at the first pitch.

True.

I know a lot more about Dusty’s smallball and pitcher management than his lineups.
