Bailey Optioned, Ross D-F-A
8-10-08 Returned RHP Aaron Harang from a rehabilitation assignment and reinstated him from the 15-day disabled list. Optioned RHP Homer Bailey to Triple-A Louisville. Designated C David Ross for assignment. Recalled C Ryan Hanigan from Louisville.
Ryan Hanigan will wear Mike Stanton's old #29.
I am really suprised they sent Bailey down. Let's get him right up here and work toward to 2009. He shows at times he is beginning to get it, and has not been any worse than Josh Fogg. If we are gonna eat Dave Ross Money, we might as well eat Josh Fogg, Paul Bako, AND Corey Patterson money.
Congrats to Ryan Hannigan, he deserved his promotion. Too bad Chris Dickerson didn't come with him, but I am still not all sold on him being a MLB Ready player.
Good luck to Dave Ross, he was a good guy with fans and had a great 2005. Injuries slowed him down the last 2 years, lets hope somewhere he can regain his '05 form.

Makes sense
Ross is a better hitter and five years younger than Bako.

ugh
this team cant do anything right can they? Ross was the best of a group of terrible catchers (and the most expensive) but he gets the DFA. Bako stays because “he handles the young guys well” and LLM stays because “who else is gonna play 1B?” i sincerely hope he catches on with the Marlins and gives them a monster month.

He'll be back to pay his respects to Dusty, Walt and Billy when he has his 'monster month'.
Bailey seemed to be improving. What is going to AAA going to do for him,

in what way was homer improving?
he’s given up 38 hits iand 18 runs in his past 4 starts —and in all those, he has given up one more earned run than he did in the previuous start. Remember the 15-hit outing? 3 starts ago. Or the 7 hits and 5 runs in 2 innings? 2 starts ago. Are you basing his “improvement” on the last start, in which he gave up 6 runs, 8 hits and 3 walks in 5+ innings?

Ross
Bako works well with the pitchers and he’s a left-handed hitter and Ross makes more money. That’s why he’s gone. Hanigan had been playing well at Triple-A. He’ll probably see alot of action with Bako and Valentin riding the pine. Patterson, Affeldt, and Weathers are probably next. They need to take a look at Chris Dickerson, Dan Herrera, and Josh Roenicke. They have played well at Triple-A and deserve a shot soon. Daryl Thompson deserves another shot and Matt Maloney, as well.

unless a team claims Ross on waivers or trades for him within the next 10 days
the Reds are on the hook for his entire salary.

why wouldn’t they just let him go? I feel like he wasn’t claimed.

Yeah
He’d be with another team by now if someone had claimed him, whether a trade was worked out or not.

They can pull a player off waivers, can't they?
IIRC, that’s what the Red Sox did last year with Manny. They put him on waivers. Of course he didn’t clear, but they couldn’t work out a trade, so they ended up keeping him.

But if they are willing to dump him for nothing anyway
What’s the point of pulling him off waivers just to DFA him?

I meant to add
because he still has to go through waivers anyway after being DFAd. So it’s not like they can just open up a trade route to anyone by DFAing him.

Just a negotiating tactic
To try and force a trade rather than a waiver claim.
If he cleared waivers, wouldn’t he be assigned to Louisville by now?

Not if he wasn't previously designated for assignment
A player can be placed on waivers without being designated. If he clears waivers, he is free to be traded to any other team. If he is claimed by a team while on waivers that’s when they can trade him or pull him off of waivers.
As boobs said, he cleared waivers though, so he could be traded to any willing bidder. So, the Reds have chosen to designate him, which means they could still trade him, but they have much less leverage now since he has already cleared waivers and if he chooses to refuse his assignment (likely), he’ll be a free agent.

Then we'd keep him
Similar thing with Brian Giles. Red Sox claimed him but no deal could be struck (because of Giles’ no-trade clause), so he’s still with the Padres. If the Padres put Giles on waivers again, it’d be irrevocable.

but what if we put him on waivers pulled him back then put him back on waivers and wanted to pull him back again only to dfa him and not work out a trade, and then he accepted an assignment to louisville, and we traded him to the marlins in a three team
deal that included the yankees and netted us a-rod and giambi, whose contract expires after this season and should be worth two draft picks if we offer him arbitration, but we may want to keep him long term if he clears waivers

why DFA him if he's already cleared waivers?
It sounds like Dusty think there might be a chance they can work out a trade, but would anyone really be interested in trading for a player that they weren’t interested in putting a waiver claim on?
I suppose salary might make a difference, but it’s not like Ross is getting that much.

completly unrleated
but i listened to Doc Rogers for the first time tonight. Does that man have a pulse? Like atleast Tracy is loud and obnixous. Doc is just like well I odn’t like going to teh ballpark because i am used to the exexcute treatment, and i don’t like the fan experiance, because when i am there i am evaluating players. Like you know, no fans evaluate players ever.

Doc is Dull, Self absorbed and is a perfect example of why the Reds have had such a dynamic executive corps(e).
Personally, I like to listen to Doc. I tape his show and play it at bedtime. His moronic droning puts me to sleep every time. Photograph of an average doc Rogers listener included:

Homer's lovin' Louisville
From Hal:
Pitcher Homer Bailey had some eye-opening things to say after he was optioned to Class AAA Louisville Sunday, about how he almost prefers it there. When somebody said going back to Louisville again had to be a bummer, Bailey brightened and said, “It’s not the big leagues, but honestly I’m looking forward to it. They are seven or eight games up and in a playoff race. When I was down there before the guys were winning and there is good morale.
“Hopefully, I can help those guys win,” Bailey added. “I hope I can’t screw ‘em up too bad. I don’t know if they really want me. I haven’t had a win since April. Maybe they’ll say, ‘Hey, no, we don’t want Homer.’ “
They could even change their name to the NoHomers.

Probably not politic for him to say that
But it bet it’s a real drag being in the Reds clubhouse these days.
Fay says they’re all looking at each other, wondering who’s next.

Nah they've got to trade Arroyo, Harang and EdE
I wouldn’t be surprised to see Joey Votto traded as the Reds are probably headed for some kind of VP reclamation roster interspersed with rooks.
