Game 110: Reds at Nationals
Cincinnati Reds @ Washington Nationals

With a win tonight, we will move a game over .500 in the post-Ken Griffey Jr. Era. That is something!
Junior makes his debut in center for the White Sox at 8 tonight in Kansas City.

I'm sure
the point is to rest Votto. Might as well be against a lefty.
Though I wonder if Dusty’s noticed that Andy hits righties a lot better than lefties.

That's a pretty crappy reason...
but by all means, we should bench a guy who was 3 for 4 with a walk in the last game, even though he hits lefties better than the guy replacing him, not to mention at least one other player we could bench instead.

Why?
It’s not like the Reds are headed to the post-season. Why push young players who aren’t used to playing full seasons?
I think it’s probably good for him to get two days off in a row.
Or one and a half. He’ll probably pinch-hit later in the game.

Does this battingorder/line up scream LOSS to you?
Why is Kepp at the 2 spot
Why is Bruce #3
Why is BP still at clean up
And for God’s sake why is EdE batting sixth!!
Andy Phillips gets a start befor being sent back to the minors?
Geez I hate to always be so negative but Dusty is really bad at this part of the manger’s job. Plus he’s to Laze Fare to have anybody worrying about their jobs or be inspiried to work harder.
Good to Jerry Jr. Back. and to have David Lee in the line up, what’s wrong with Votto, he must have gotten too many hits last game.
Jerry Hairston Jr. cf
Jeff Keppinger ss -8th
Jay Bruce rf – 2nd
Brandon Phillips 2b -5th
Adam Dunn lf – 3rd
Edwin Encarnacion 3b – 4th
Andy Phillips 1b – Votto 6th
David Ross c – 7th.
Homer Bailey 9th
Is this so difficult for Dusty to grasp

I got to hear sMarty and clownboy’s excitement as they began to already crown Brandon Phillips as the new leader of the team. Make him captain and everything will be grand,,,then in a year or so Jay Bruce will take over as the new KGJr…blah blah blah belch.
Jerry Jr. is not fully recovered. Kepp only had 1 hit. Bruxe 1 hit (HR) BP looked like he was in another time zone. Dunner was OTL too. EdE hit the ball hard and had nothing to show for it, Ross nada
Methinks Bailey will be on the next bus to Louisville, hopefully along with Andy Phillips. I think we’ll see Corey in the line up tomorrow, Unfortunately Dustbag will lead him off.

I dunno
They played in Louisville together, and both Andy and Corey hit a hell of a lot better than Dickerson. Dickerson does have good speed and a good glove, but I don’t think he’ll hit better than Andy or Corey. Plus he’s another lefty. (He also seems a bit injury prone. Seems like he’s always on the DL when the Reds have an opening.)
Also, they may want Dickerson to play every day rather than warm the bench.
I think I would rather call Janish up, because he’s a good SS, and the Reds currently don’t have one. And he’s right-handed, and actually does hit lefties pretty well. But again, the Reds may prefer that he play every day in the minors.
Rosters expand soon. They could call them all up.

Groan ...
I’m a pretty unabashed Phillips apologist, but I don’t like to hear this:
“It’s not about what I want, it’s about what the Reds want,” Phillips said. “Of course, I want it to be my team. Regardless of what I do or what I say, it’s really how they want to present it. It’s all about promoting. We have a guy named Jay Bruce on this team. If they want it to be his team, it’ll be his team. They’re promoting it like it’s his team, so they might as well say it’s his team. If you want to keep it real, that’s real talk. He’s hitting third.“Plus, it starts with you guys [in the media]. People read what you say. If you say ‘Bruce Almighty,’ they’ll say ‘We want to see Bruce.’ It’s the truth. When people see Griffey, it’s ‘The Kid,’ and it’s catchy. Griffey is the man. He still is the man.”
Maybe if BP hears about the “Gay for Jay” campaign he’ll be more reluctant to want “the man” status.
More “real talk”: the Reds will pay BP at least $23mm over the next three years and have yet to make the same committment to Bruce, despite the new trend to lock up pre-arb stars.
The article itself is pretty amazing for barely mentioning Dunn, Encarnacion and Harang as leaders of the post-Griffey Reds.

This is especially disappointing in light of the Hamilton rumors
I don’t get the whole “It’s so-and-so’s team.” schtick. This isn’t basketball. Besides, the players will determine whose team it is. If somebody steps up and takes a leadership role and the other players listen, then there is your answer.

This is the kind of thing that makes me believe Trent’s reports. If he’s right, BP will never be the team leader. And it has nothing to do with the media.
I mean, WTF? He did this to Hamilton last year, too. Why pick on rookies? That’s not the kind of thing a team leader does.

I did notice that someone brought Phillips his glove last night
after he made the third out. Still, it’s a really dumb thing to say. “He’s hitting third.” Yeah, and you’re batting cleanup, despite the fact that you’re not a slugger, and despite the fact that you have the major league home run leader on your team.
Sorry we haven’t come up with a catchy nickname for you, BP. “GIBP” and “Cancer” do have pretty negative connotations, I suppose.

I mean, I’m not William Safire here, but that nickname sort of connotes “It’s your team”, yes?
Bruce Almighty is a pretty shitty nickname, too. Hova needs to catch on.
re: folks from earlier in the thread. Masset looked nasty, and I am absolutely, positively, sure that he isn’t Randy Keisler v4.0 (Michalak was 2.0, Shearn: 3.0). I’m glad Homer is keeping his head up…it looked like he really got hosed by shitty defense, which has got to be frustrating. I’m certainly glad God put Homer in our plans, so to speak.

Eyewitness report
Driving into work this morning, they were talking on the radio about how the Nationals were in a 9 game skid. I had a feeling that the Reds might be the cure for what ailed them. After all, the Nats swept the series in DC last year.
As I walked to my seat, I took the stairs which look over the Anacostia River. It was the first time I had gone that way, and the combination of a ballpark on a riverfront made me think of Cincinnati.
I had thought that my seat had a sweet view of the Capitol dome. However, there is a big building directly in the sightline, completely blocking the dome (though you can see it from some other seats). A guy in front of me said that the building was owned by Ted Lerner, the same guy who owns the Nats. Nice job, Mr. Lerner.
I met up with Cy Schourek, and continued my streak of finding out that Red Reporters are actually good people in person, and not just nerdy basement dwellers like Slyde.
The game started with a 7 pitch inning for the Reds. Pretty typical, we agreed. Then Homer took the mound. He didn’t look terrible, and the stadium gun was showing him hit 95 a couple times. The Nats weren’t hitting him hard, but they were blooping him to death, and the defense wasn’t helping out at all. The old man next to me kept saying how Homer couldn’t find the plate, and I calmly told him Homer needed an MRI. And in the second inning, Homer actually did start to get hit hard.
The Reds actually hit some balls hard themselves. Jay Bruce especially was robbed a couple times on nice plays by first baseman Kory “With a K” Casto. Cy and I couldn’t have had more fun with that name. The Nats infield was a bunch of “who-dats,” but their defense was waaay better than the other times I’ve gone to the games (when you’re not featuring the fattest infield in baseball with Dmitri Young, Ronnie Belliard, and Christian Guzman, you play better).
Masset pitched really nicely in his debut. Sounds like Griffey did well his first day as a Sock. Hamilton-Volquez trade, part deux! Masset’s bunting was painful to watch, and I had to remind myself that this was probably his first at-bat. The old man behind me was irate that they don’t teach bunting down in the minors, because you never know where you’ll end up. I don’t like bunting, but he might have had a point. If Dusty wants to bunt as much as he does, maybe he should have Jacoby work with the hitters to polish their bunting techniques. Instead, he keeps asking guys to bunt who never really have before. Edwin, Dunn, Votto, Bruce, and now Masset. Inexcusable.
Homer’s bunt was really nice though.
There’s not a lot of positive things to take away from a game where you get 3-hit by Odalis Perez. But it turned out it was worth it when Bruce made an excellent diving catch for the final out of the 8th inning, then turned around and hit an absolute rocket of a home run. Most of the fans were booing, but I was saying “Bruuuuuuuuuu-ce!” Cy and I were throwing up the Jay Hova dynasty signs.

So kind of a crummy game. There were a ton of Reds fans at the stadium though, which is cool. Washington is a city that everyone moved to and no one’s actually from, so most the Nationals “fans” are really only there to see their actual team when they come to town. Sort of like what I was doing. And I’m going back tonight!
Oh, and the best part of the game was when a big fat guy came into the row in front of me holding two ice cream cones. Sadly, he gave one to his girlfriend.
There’s not a lot positive

the old guy Brendan refers to had a definite man-crush on Brendan
I kept waiting for the dude to slip ‘nukkah his number.
Outside of that, I learned a lot about infield defense this game. Nats had it, Reds didn’t. I have faith in this Bruce kid, though. Also, I got to the game early, so I had the chance to watch the Reds take BP. LLM made a diving catch in the outfield shagging flies, which got a standing O from all of the Reds pitchers and made Weathers laugh so hard he cried. I also hung out with a bunch of Dominicans and took pitchers of them with Edinson. Interesting fact: Volquez is pronounced “Vol-KAY”. And the 4 Dominicans on the Reds largely hang out by themselves, with Encarnacion the only guy who seems to be on both sides of the language barrier.
But a shitty game. May go back tonight, may go back Sunday, who knows?

Interesting
What about the other Latino players, like LLM and Jolbert?
It being Old-Timers Day at Yankee Stadium (the last one in the Stadium), I’m thinking about Bernie Williams. He used to tell young Latino players that it was important to learn English. He said you should be able to give interviews in English, and represent your country to Americans.
