Carlos Guevara
I was going thru the transactions on MLB.COM and noticed the Padres have Outrighted Carlos Guevara to Triple-A.
San Diego Padres
Outrighted OF Paul McAnulty and RHP Carlos Guevara to Triple-A Portland; Purchased the contract of OF Chip Ambres and also recalled INF Brian Myrow and LHP Joe Thatcher from Triple-A Portland; Placed RHP Brett Tomko on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 1, with a right elbow strain.
As many of you know, Guevara was a Rule V Pick from the Reds Farm System last year, but struggled with an injury this year and posted a 1-0 record with a 5.84 ERA in 12.1 IP, allowing 2 HR, while striking out 11, and walking 9. If I recall, his out pitch was a screwball.
Don't the Padres have to keep him all year on the 25-Man, or we get him back or a PTBNL??

Word is that the Padres offered him back to the Reds
and the Reds refused. The Reds will likely either receive money or a PTBNL.

I just remember a whole lot of people here were super pissed we did not protect him from the Rule V.
Where are those people? and the high horses they rode in on?

I was pissed
but mainly because they gave up on a player who had never had anything but success. And I’ll admit that I’m wrong as much as the Reds are, which is why neither of us have won a pennant in a long time.

Could this possible be a case of scouting vs statistics???
I agree Guevara’s numbers looked great, but the Reds never deemed him more than a one-pitch pony, and a screwy pony at that. (I’m too lazy to look it up, but I’m pretty sure they never even gave him a shot in L’ville)
Then we take in the Rule V some dude with nasty(the bad one) stats, but with an arm the scouts are crazy about. Kur-plunk!

absolutely
sometimes the scout guys are right, sometimes the stat guys are right, and sometimes it takes both to really put it together.

I was pissed
We could be seeing a stat/scout split. In my opinion teams have an undue prejudice against “trick” pitchers and I’d like to see them given more of a shot (in relief, not starting).
Like Slyde I haven’t won a pennant, but I do have as many home runs as Victor Martinez this year so I must know something about baseball.

I was a little pissed at the time.
Guevara had put up great numbers in our system, and was projecting to be a future piece of the bullpen, and we let him go so we could give a roster spot to Jorge Cantu. Look how that worked out. I’d still take Guevara.
As far as his numbers this year go, 12 innings is a small sample size to be making conclusive decisions about the kid’s future. I don’t see why the Reds didn’t take him back, especially when the arms in AAA keep leaving to go to Korea (not that Guevara’s a starter, but those innings need to come from somewhere). I’d rather have taken him back than getting a PBTNL or cash, certainly.

im still pretty high on him
and im pretty pissed the Reds didnt take him back. he still needs some time in the minors, obviously, but he wasnt exactly healthy this year either. like BK said, its not like Louisville is chock full of stud relievers right now. this isnt Chris Michalak or Tom Shearn or Adam Pettyjohn here, this is a kid with some potential, even if it is gimmicky. i will take a long-shot over a never-was every day of the week.

I objected at the time
Simply because we acquired the exact same pitcher in the RuleV draft; why not keep the one we had, and had shown some promise?

Rule V vs. trade
I thought they got someone with terrible stats in the Rule V who they later released (made maybe 1 spring appearance?)
Herrera (from the Hamilton trade) is the one like Guevara, no? Good stats, trick pitches.
If the Reds would have taken him back, could they have done it off the 40-man roster? He’s had nothing but good numbers in the minors, but until this year never pitched above AA. I still can’t understand why he didn’t get promoted to AAA while with the Reds.

Yes, he would have to be on the 40-man roster
or he would have to pass through waivers.

Rosters
He’s still on the Padres 40-man?

according to their website, he's not
but then I would think he would have to go through waivers in order to be taken off of the 40-man roster.
