This team needs a real hitting coach and a functional pitching coach
The more I see this team struggle offensively, the more I wonder why Chris Chambliss is no longer the hitting coach. The more I see Aaron Harang struggle, the more I wonder why Dick Polehead is still the pitching coach. I am reasonably convinced that strong direction from either areas of coaching could engender positive results from the offense and pitching. Yet the present coaching staff seems at best inert. With, of course, the exception of the little gnome guy, Chris Squires who has won both of his games when called upon to run the team. I agree with Kent Murker - This team has all the components to win. Once again I turn to the manager and his coaching staff and ask - what have they done over the course of the season to improve this team's individual performance? The Answer - not much. This series with the Cubs is vitally important. Yet again the Team plays like they're on downers - Quaalude's - Soapers - Heroin....maybe even BEER! I I totally believe that at least 9 - 12 games this season have been lost by the manager and his staff. And - Where is the Veteran leadership ?...cause it sure isn't coming from Dusty Baker and crew. I just hate to see this season lost to incompetence and 'right way' bullshit. AAARRRGGGHHHH

Its been a long time coming. It seems to me that a lot of what you say has been true for as long as a few left-handed outfielders have been the dominant on-field personalities. Get some more youngsters and you might have a change in attitude and effort that can make up for some of their production. I suppose at least Toothpick gets another year though.

Yeah...
I’m sure Dunn and Junior’s apathy for the game has let the air out of this season for the Reds. Like last night, who couldn’t see that Dunn’s indolence clearly affected Harang to the point that he walked 7 and continued to generally pitch as though he had been over-worked in the last few seasons? And look how they have corrupted our great hope in center; that golden sombrero was clearly a side effect from Bruce having played next to those selfish homer-or-bust outfielders.
I don’t get where so many fans see a lack of effort from this team. Have the results been lackluster? Of course. But really that is to be expected. We are starting two rookies and two or three journeymen EVERYDAY. Which leaves us three or four established starters a night (EE. BP, Dunn, Jr), of which only two are in their prime. What team scores consistently with that sort of lineup?
And the starting rotation is equally flawed. Our two established "prime" pitchers have had ridiculous inning loads the last few seasons and it is showing in their spotty performance. Voltron and Cueto are cutting their teeth, and the fifth spot has been a grab bag of suck.
Seriously, what do people expect of this collection of players? There is no quick fix for this team; BS like "getting younger" and "blowing it up" actually further exasperate the real issue, a lack of established talent.

Rambling Madville Diary
DRINK!!
He's doing it. He's eating a tire!
by Man Mountain on Jul 9, 2008 11:53 AM EDT 1 recs
Doctor Mountain:
Truly drink was an impetus for said rambling. After several shots of Jack, a few Buds and a Killians, I was sufficiently focused to bowl at a very high level.(and we crushed our competition) The downer was watching the Reds game…the more I drank the obvious it became that this team isn’t THAT bad. I therefore looked for the nearest and most incompetent area of management and immediately placed the blame there – Mr. Toothpick, DickPolehead, and Brook, by the book, Jacoby and of course the inimitable Mark,’send them anyway’ Berry.
I apologize for excessive profanity in the Diary, using words like AAARRRGGGHHH and Beer…well I was feeling my hops! But I stand by the post. The present field management would need a BRM roster to successful and even then they’d probably screw it up.

Lineups
One thing that’s bothered me is how EdE’s been (not) used.
On a team starved for RH power, Dusty’s been sitting him to play Kepp, who has as many XBH (13) than EdE has HRs (granted, in 81 more AB, but EdE has 17 more XBH in those AB). In fact, for as much love as he gets (with cries of “We need his bat in the lineup!”), Kepp’s OPS+ is only 94 while EdE’s is 103.
I know the OF is a mess – Jr really should be benched, and it now looks like Bruce really could have used some more seasoning in AAA – and Hairston does need to play everyday until the witch’s potion wears off, but I don’t see how sitting EdE for Kepp is a good move.
Often wrong, never uncertain.
by sidnancy on Jul 9, 2008 1:16 PM EDT 0 recs
I agree with you
and only hope that EdE’s being benched because he’s not 100%. If only I could believe that were the justification…
That said, in a small sample size vs. LHP, Keppinger has been hitting pretty damn well-.386/.470/.544. He’s only hitting .255 with few walks or XBH against righties, though, so it’s pretty clear he’s not our best option against them. But looks like we should be getting him in the order with Hairston against lefties as much as possible-with Jr. or Bruce sitting, not EdE.
If Dusty seriously thinks that Keppinger should start over a healthy EdE against a RHP, this is all pretty hopeless.

if Cock Penis (the pitching coach) and/or Jacoby were changed? Jr.’s still hitting 3rd and all of the micromanagement shit will still happen.

Been on Vacation
And during that time the Reds won 4 in a row, of course was it me being on Vacation or the fact they player the nationals? We’ll never know.
I think Pole and Jacoby are not doing so well but their third base coach is horrible (Berry?). So many times Reds get thrown out at the plate easily, or stay on third when there is no chance to get them at the plate. If you asked me who to look at replacing it would go Dusty, Jacoby, Berry. Remember we are talking about the Reds who sometimes feel a replacement should actually be worse than the guy they let go for poor performance.
Do you think Dusty wore his armbands to his job interview, and that was what impressed Bob and Wayne so much?

sounds kind of like the fundamental attribution error at work here
I don’t think Griffey’s problem is a lack of leadership, heart, hustle, etc. I just think his old body is not very good anymore.
And I can’t exactly defend the coaching staff, but if they’re responsible for losing 9-12 games in half a season we’re seeing the worst coaching jobs ever.

FWIW
the team is 16-8 in one-run games.
The problems of this team won’t be solved by firing the coaches, as much as Dusty frustrates me. It’s just not a very good team.

thanks to Burton/Coco, mainly. this bullpen really is monstrous compared to the shit of the past few years. its really the only part of this team that doesnt need help.
and i do agree with you, i mean, come on. the coaches really dont make much of a difference, but when Dusty makes these obvious mistakes day in, day out its easy to point the finger. this season hasnt turned out how any of us had hoped and my frustration needs to be focused somewhere. of course he isnt the worst. he never pinch-hit Juan Castro for Josh Hamilton or Javy Valentin for Jay Bruce.

i don't think a coaches career stats are that big of a deal
he may have had no stuff at all, and got by in the minors by being a smart pitcher, that is a total hypothisis, but it may have been a lack of talent, not intelligence that kept him from being a good pitcher.

I would like to fire Dr. Tim too
Boy this team is like a soft pile of elephant shit…when it is good it hard
When it stinks it is soft and gooey. Right now and for most of the season its been one fresh dump after another.
If coaches don’t make a difference then why the hell do all the best teams have them?
We don’t think coaches make much of a difference because we’ve only had a couple good ones recently…Don Gullet and Chris Chambliss. I wonder why guys like Sparky, Pinella, Bobby Cox, Tony LaRusa, Tommy LaSorda always seem to have more wins than losses…but guys like Miley, Coach Narron, Dave Shula and Dustnuts Baker don’t do as well? Could it be that the former are just plain better a getting players to play , to create a winning attitude and maybe make less stupid mistakes than the latter? Or do the former just always ‘seem’ to have better players.
Sparky won it all in both leagues….

ESPN.com had this fun little nugget
The Reds have been outscored 61-19 in their last nine losses.
Remember the days when we had a good offense? I would say but now we have good pitching, except we don’t even really have that. Our team is pants.
by Brendanukkah on Jul 10, 2008 10:27 AM EDT 0 recs
Today the Reds were mostly patient and beat the Cubs w/like 18 hits and 12 runs.
With some exceptions today’s Reds were working the count, making the pitcher throw strikes and they beat a fairly decent pitcher in Ted Lily. Why aren’t they mandated to show more AB maturity by this kind of showing?

Last comment before this diary expires
2008 Red’s players ( for the most part) are good enough to be in the race.
But the Manager and coaches are not. Ergo – If the Reds win 40 more games it will despite the staff, not because of it.
Revealing quote by Dusty: Dusty Baker is showing he is no judge of pitching talent thus far this … “Dick Pole (current Reds pitching coach) is the best pitching coach I ever had. ...www.journal-news.com/s/content/oh/
