Game 90: Reds vs. Nationals
Washington Nationals at Cincinnati Reds, Jul 6, 2008 1:15 PM EDT
|
|
|
This is Edinson's penultimate start before the All-Star Game, although his start pattern doesn't align perfectly with that game. Given tomorrow's day off, Volquez's next scheduled start should be Saturday -- although Dusty could move him up a day should he be named the starter.
None of that matters if Edinson doesn't have a great start today. He is slipping of late, falling behind Lincecum in strikeouts, and he needs to give Clint Hurdle a reason to pick him over the Giants' ace.

Gotta give Kepp and Jerry Jr. some props - They've been pretty steady.
If I were to rest anyone it would be Jr. but he’s on a roll now…so what you gnna do? Can’t sit Dunnn.

Keppinger's been struggling lately
I don’t know that I like him in the 2 slot. But if there’s a team to break out of your slump, it’d be the Nats.

Webb was already announced to be the starter...
http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=MLB&id=3660
...so it’s time for Voltron to show them they made a mistake.

i hadnt seen that
although it’s not so much an announcement as it is the new york post reporting it. so i’ll still assume there is no set starter.
What do you mean, "blank slate"?

unless it's announced today with the rest of the team, in which case this entire post is pointless

Webb seems the least worthy
He just has the most pedigree. I agree that Volquez, Lincecum, and Sheets would all be better choices. It’s strange that the only one of those four pitchers – who I think we would agree are the best in the NL so far this year – is on a winning team. I hadn’t been following them too closely, but I was pretty astonished to learn that Arizona is under .500.

I'll use it in this sentence as the penultimate word.

The Phillies signed Brad Lidge to a 3 year, $37.5 million extension.
Lidge has been lights out this year, but you have to wonder if he’s due for a meltdown like he had in Houston. It’s going to be a pretty comparable case to Coco Cordero. A reliever who can be great, but falls just sort of dominant, and is signed for big bucks for multiple years. I hope that their guy falls apart before our guy does.
by Brendanukkah on Jul 6, 2008 12:26 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Seems like it would be a mistake the Phillies could afford to make more than the Reds though
Then again, if I were them, I’d rather put that money in a fund to pay Ryan Howard, especially if his website idea doesn’t pan out.

I’m really liking the Reds position to seep here. And after watching the last two games in person I have to say if ever there was a team in line to get no hit it is today’s Nationals. They are just terrible.

Brilliant! Voltron settles down and is beginning to mow down the gNats.
So instead of leaving him in, Dustbag ( with a possibly gimpy Hairston to worry about) sends up LLM. I really don’t get it. If Voltron has to lifted why not Bruce and take Jerry Jr, out?

Four days in a row for a guy with his history and our investment in him is lunacy. Speaking of which, God only knows how Brian Wilson made the AS team over Coco. A few more saves, but also a 4-something ERA in that park. And with Lincecum the Giants already have their rep.

i dont wanna sound like Steve Phillips or anything, but you gotta count the Brewers as the team to beat now. Sheets/CC is dramatic on a Greek scale. and this is also a great deal for the Indians. LaPorta looks like he could be a monster, and could be in Cleveland by September. It sucks to see CC leave Cleveland, especially going to our Central rival, but i hate the Brewers much much less than i do the Cubs. so alright.

Congratulations on your haul
This makes the NL Central race extremely interesting, though a lot harder for the Reds to be a part of it (not that they ever were, but we’re just off a 4 game sweep so I’m feeling good). And as much as I hate Cubs fans, and as much as I want to like Indians fans, I was reading the thread over at Let’s Go Tribe and just stopped counting how many snide/bitchy statements were made over using the subject line. The fuck is wrong with them?
So anyway, go Brewers. We decade-plus-playoff-drought teams have to root for each other, I suppose. Some day the Pirates may even be good again.

Yeah, I'm not sure
But they really feel strongly about the subject line thing. They even brought it over to our blog.
He's extremely quick and good.

New avatar?
Just goes to show you how big that trade is.
I’m starting to wish bodily harm on Matt LaPorta just as karmic retribution for the LGT crowd being jerks. Carrying that shit over to your site? Ugh. Oh, speaking of your site: I like “Black” Sabathia as a nickname. I’d never made that connection. But careful. As we are known to say around here, that’s racist!
This Cubs-Brewers race ought to be the best in baseball, I think. Particularly if St. Louis somehow manages to stay in it. We’ll try to do our part tomorrow with the Cubbies.

Milwaukee's Beast
Yeah, that’s a helluva rotation with CC. Him and Sheets at the top with decent middle guys in Parra and Suppan. Bush is turning things around is fine for a fifth guy. The bullpen could use another arm or two, though. Maybe Washington could give up someone for Hardy + Hart (just ask for the MRI first).

I just realized the Reds
were out hit in 3 out of 4 games against the Nats. But a win is a win is a win. Just saying…
