Game 89: Reds vs Nationals

Washington Nationals @ Cincinnati Reds

Next Game

Washington Nationals

Saturday, Jul 5, 2008, 7:10 PM EDT
Great American Ball Park

Tim Redding vs Josh Fogg

Partly cloudy. Winds blowing in from center field at 5-10 m.p.h. Game Time temperature: Around 75.

Complete Coverage >

W-L ERA WHIP K BB
2008 - Tim Redding 6-3 4.21 1.34 65 37

W-L ERA WHIP K BB
2008 - Josh Fogg 1-2 9.85 1.73 17 10

Let's focus on the good here.  Josh Fogg made five "rehab" starts in the minors and threw 36 innings with a 2.75 ERA, striking out 26 and only walking 6.  Offensively, the Nationals have played like a minor league team this season.  Ergo...

The Pirates play the Brewers tonight, so a win by the Reds could mean a move up into 4th place.  Then again, a loss could land them back in the cellar if the Astros win.  I guess what I'm saying is, this could be about as exciting as it gets for us this year.  Reds fever - catch it!

I'm leaving in a couple of minutes

to go here and drink some delicious beer. But somehow I doubt that they’ll have the Reds game on…

We ain’t no last place team are we Pops ?

by Gray on Jul 5, 2008 6:47 PM EDT   0 recs

I can't see anyone on the home team

Either they’re all camouflaged, or my eyes just refuse to process something that ugly.

by Brendanukkah on Jul 5, 2008 7:11 PM EDT   0 recs

Hmm

The Nats are still wearing those special 4th of July hats.

Those are disgusting

at least San Diego can pull it off somewhat…

No kidding

Did we wear these on Memorial Day? I can maybe see them then. But I think something more Colonial would be appropriate this weekend.

Nice throw by Bako

Not sure that Bernadina wasn’t safe though.

Nats announcers

Excusing Dunn’s average because of his home run and RBI numbers. Also point out his 68 walks, and .389 OBP. Nice.

Warning track shot

Shit.

And I’m starting to feel like Andrew at True Blue L.A.

Nats announcers

“Fogg is hittable so far.” Now and forever, Nats announcers. Now and forever.

by Brendanukkah on Jul 5, 2008 7:39 PM EDT   0 recs

Ugh

RBI single by Tim Redding. Way to get beat by the pitcher, Fogg.

by Brendanukkah on Jul 5, 2008 7:44 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I was about to say that Fogg sucks for having done that...

But then I realized that I should never be surprised by something like this from Fogg.

Hey Dusty...Are you sure you're OK? You might need an MRI.

Hee hee

Don Sutton trying to say “Matsuzaka” was Harry Carey-esque.

“Why can’t Joe Smith be on that list?” That’s racist!

by Brendanukkah on Jul 5, 2008 7:51 PM EDT   0 recs

Jose Rijo has seen better days

His physique is Dmitri-esque.

Nats announcers: “That’s not Flava Flav is it?” That’s racist.

i will never forget that cold day in May back in 2002

when he got his first start since 1995, and got a win at Wrigley Field.

You gotta like your chances at a double play

when Dmitri Young is chugging towards first.

by Brendanukkah on Jul 5, 2008 7:58 PM EDT   0 recs

Well

It looks like Redding has been hittable, too, but the Reds have nothing to show for it.

Cherry Hudson

I am LOVING him as a leadoff hitter.

by Brendanukkah on Jul 5, 2008 8:02 PM EDT   0 recs

I'm so confused

Hairston vanished from Gameday as if abducted by aliens. Then Bruce got “in play, no outs.” But it looks like there was an out. Unless he was abducted by the same aliens who took Hairston. (Who was magically returned to 2B after Bruce hit.)

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

by BubbaFan on Jul 5, 2008 8:05 PM EDT   0 recs

Bruce hit a ball right at Dmitri Young

Who blocked it in front of him, but then couldn’t find the ball. Eventually he did locate it, and stepped on first, so The Bruce was out. Hudson went to second.

by Brendanukkah on Jul 5, 2008 8:07 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Nice battle by Jr.

But Cherry stranded on 3B. He’s gonna have to steal home or something.

Hey Brendan,

I found myself in the Brickskeller for a couple of hours yesterday. A real kick-ass and overwhelming beer list, but a surprisingly crappy and limited juke box.

by ken on Jul 5, 2008 8:28 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah, it's the worst jukebox in DC, which is saying something

It has the Guinness record for most beers available, except that you have to have at least three beers in mind because they’ll be out of the first two you order. I kind of like RFD in Chinatown (which is owned by the same people) better.

Did you see the DC fireworks?

by Brendanukkah on Jul 5, 2008 8:32 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah, they were batting about .333

Though it’s not like I was disappointed because I was basically throwing darts at various Eastern Bloc ales.

Didn’t see the fireworks. I came back to Philly in the afternoon and enjoyed a long beer snooze on the train. I went down to meet up with my brother, who was in DC for the weekend visiting his fiancee.

by ken on Jul 5, 2008 8:40 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Cool

I watched the fireworks from in front of the Iwo Jima Memorial. There was a Belgian family in front of me, and the father was talking to a man from St. Louis, who was trying to convince him of the greatness of Budweiser. It made me just sort of shake my head.

by Brendanukkah on Jul 5, 2008 8:43 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Imagine how the Belgian guy felt

Budweiser isn’t even the best beer named “Bud.”

Finally, a run

Nobody admires a sac fly like BP!

by ken on Jul 5, 2008 8:43 PM EDT   0 recs

Nuts

Votto should’ve picked that.

by ken on Jul 5, 2008 8:47 PM EDT   0 recs

Yeah

That’s a tough error on Encarnacion. Maybe Hairston could have fielded it, but I don’t think he would have gotten the runner – would have been too hard of a throw going to his right.

That’s as much Votto’s fault as Edwin’s.

by Brendanukkah on Jul 5, 2008 8:49 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Been listening to George and the Crappy old leftover talk to Murker

Murker sounds like a pretty normal guy. Meanwhile Ede, Votto and the gang throw the ball all over the place.
Looks like Dmitri is on the Prince fielder diet.

I think I may know what Josh Fogg's problem is...

Here’s the pitch sequence from the Kearns at-bat (according to GameDay):
1-Fastball-88
2-Changeup-86
3-Fastball-88
4-Fastball-86
5-Fastball-88
6-Slider-86
7-Fastball-88

Nice changeup he’s got there.

Hey Dusty...Are you sure you're OK? You might need an MRI.

My roomate, with this bon mot about the uniforms

“So, for one game they decided they were tired of being the Reds and became the Rednecks.”

by Brendanukkah on Jul 5, 2008 8:59 PM EDT   0 recs

What do the uniforms look like?

Is it more than the holiday weekend hats?

Camo

Truly an eye sore.

Are they auctioning the jerseys afterward?

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

by BubbaFan on Jul 5, 2008 9:03 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

They might be. Not sure.

But a lot of crowd members are wearing the camo tops too. It made me wonder if they were giving them away to like the first 10,000 fans.

by Brendanukkah on Jul 5, 2008 9:08 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

They're back to their normal hats (although the Nats aren't, strangely)

They just have camo tops, like the Padres. Only uglier.

by Brendanukkah on Jul 5, 2008 9:02 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Wow, really?

I thought all the teams were still wearing the flag hats. The Yanks and Sox were.

Maybe it clashed with the camo…

How bad are the Nats?

Fogg and Weathers combined to only give up one run.

by Brendanukkah on Jul 5, 2008 9:13 PM EDT   0 recs

Honestly

That could say, “How bad are the Nats? PITCHER X and Weathers combined to only give up one run.” And it would still be a valid question.
