Game 89: Reds vs Nationals
Washington Nationals at Cincinnati Reds, Jul 5, 2008 7:10 PM EDT
|

|
Let's focus on the good here. Josh Fogg made five "rehab" starts in the minors and threw 36 innings with a 2.75 ERA, striking out 26 and only walking 6. Offensively, the Nationals have played like a minor league team this season. Ergo...
The Pirates play the Brewers tonight, so a win by the Reds could mean a move up into 4th place. Then again, a loss could land them back in the cellar if the Astros win. I guess what I'm saying is, this could be about as exciting as it gets for us this year. Reds fever - catch it!

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
I'm leaving in a couple of minutes
to go here and drink some delicious beer. But somehow I doubt that they’ll have the Reds game on…
We ain’t no last place team are we Pops ?
I can't see anyone on the home team
Either they’re all camouflaged, or my eyes just refuse to process something that ugly.
Those are disgusting
at least San Diego can pull it off somewhat…
www.crosleyfieldterrace.wordpress.com
No kidding
Did we wear these on Memorial Day? I can maybe see them then. But I think something more Colonial would be appropriate this weekend.

Nats announcers
Excusing Dunn’s average because of his home run and RBI numbers. Also point out his 68 walks, and .389 OBP. Nice.
I was about to say that Fogg sucks for having done that...
But then I realized that I should never be surprised by something like this from Fogg.
Hey Dusty...Are you sure you're OK? You might need an MRI.

Hee hee
Don Sutton trying to say “Matsuzaka” was Harry Carey-esque.
“Why can’t Joe Smith be on that list?” That’s racist!
Jose Rijo has seen better days
His physique is Dmitri-esque.
Nats announcers: “That’s not Flava Flav is it?” That’s racist.
i will never forget that cold day in May back in 2002
when he got his first start since 1995, and got a win at Wrigley Field.
The Dusty Path to the World Series!*
*Note this is not an endorsment of Dusty Baker.
Well
It looks like Redding has been hittable, too, but the Reds have nothing to show for it.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
I'm so confused
Hairston vanished from Gameday as if abducted by aliens. Then Bruce got “in play, no outs.” But it looks like there was an out. Unless he was abducted by the same aliens who took Hairston. (Who was magically returned to 2B after Bruce hit.)
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Bruce hit a ball right at Dmitri Young
Who blocked it in front of him, but then couldn’t find the ball. Eventually he did locate it, and stepped on first, so The Bruce was out. Hudson went to second.
sounds downright comical
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Nice battle by Jr.
But Cherry stranded on 3B. He’s gonna have to steal home or something.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
He got a nice ovation from the St. Louis fans last night
I probably would have booed him for going to the Cubs.
Eh...he won a WS so he ain't all bad
plus, according to Grande, they are the classiest fans in the league

Hey Brendan,
I found myself in the Brickskeller for a couple of hours yesterday. A real kick-ass and overwhelming beer list, but a surprisingly crappy and limited juke box.
by ken on Jul 5, 2008 8:28 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, it's the worst jukebox in DC, which is saying something
It has the Guinness record for most beers available, except that you have to have at least three beers in mind because they’ll be out of the first two you order. I kind of like RFD in Chinatown (which is owned by the same people) better.
Did you see the DC fireworks?
Yeah, they were batting about .333
Though it’s not like I was disappointed because I was basically throwing darts at various Eastern Bloc ales.
Didn’t see the fireworks. I came back to Philly in the afternoon and enjoyed a long beer snooze on the train. I went down to meet up with my brother, who was in DC for the weekend visiting his fiancee.

Cool
I watched the fireworks from in front of the Iwo Jima Memorial. There was a Belgian family in front of me, and the father was talking to a man from St. Louis, who was trying to convince him of the greatness of Budweiser. It made me just sort of shake my head.
Imagine how the Belgian guy felt
Budweiser isn’t even the best beer named “Bud.”

Fogg mowing 'em down
How about some run support?
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Yeah
That’s a tough error on Encarnacion. Maybe Hairston could have fielded it, but I don’t think he would have gotten the runner – would have been too hard of a throw going to his right.
That’s as much Votto’s fault as Edwin’s.
Been listening to George and the Crappy old leftover talk to Murker
Murker sounds like a pretty normal guy. Meanwhile Ede, Votto and the gang throw the ball all over the place.
Looks like Dmitri is on the Prince fielder diet.

"When I got my award, I just wore my usual stuff," Dunn said.
"Was it for the Reds organization or all of baseball?" Bruce said.
I think I may know what Josh Fogg's problem is...
Here’s the pitch sequence from the Kearns at-bat (according to GameDay):
1-Fastball-88
2-Changeup-86
3-Fastball-88
4-Fastball-86
5-Fastball-88
6-Slider-86
7-Fastball-88
Nice changeup he’s got there.

My roomate, with this bon mot about the uniforms
“So, for one game they decided they were tired of being the Reds and became the Rednecks.”
What do the uniforms look like?
Is it more than the holiday weekend hats?
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Ohhhh...
This is camo day.
Are they auctioning the jerseys afterward?
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
They might be. Not sure.
But a lot of crowd members are wearing the camo tops too. It made me wonder if they were giving them away to like the first 10,000 fans.
Doesn't mention that
in the reds.com article. Seems silly not to.
by ken on Jul 5, 2008 9:05 PM EDT up reply actions
They're back to their normal hats (although the Nats aren't, strangely)
They just have camo tops, like the Padres. Only uglier.
Wow, really?
I thought all the teams were still wearing the flag hats. The Yanks and Sox were.
Maybe it clashed with the camo…
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Fogg - 6 innings of good stuuf
against the worst team in the majors…Oh no here comes ‘the commercial’—ArrrgggHHHH= Bronson, don’t give up your day job buddy

"When I got my award, I just wore my usual stuff," Dunn said.
"Was it for the Reds organization or all of baseball?" Bruce said.
Honestly
That could say, “How bad are the Nats? PITCHER X and Weathers combined to only give up one run.” And it would still be a valid question.
I want a hamburger. No, a cheeseburger. I want a hot dog. I want a milkshake. I want potato chips...
Murker debuted in 1989
Uh -Oh…..Corey sighting!!!!!
"When I got my award, I just wore my usual stuff," Dunn said.

I love how they try to justify his horrible numbers
by putting the number of games played in the stat line
www.crosleyfieldterrace.wordpress.com
That reminded me of this picture I took back in April.

He was impressive even back then.
I want a hamburger. No, a cheeseburger. I want a hot dog. I want a milkshake. I want potato chips...
Oh crap
Corey Patterson singled. I’m going to the bomb shelter immediately. I suggest you do the same. Armageddon is upon us!
I want a hamburger. No, a cheeseburger. I want a hot dog. I want a milkshake. I want potato chips...
How did Corey get on base?
Gameday doesn’t say.

Elijah Dukes text message joke.
I want a hamburger. No, a cheeseburger. I want a hot dog. I want a milkshake. I want potato chips...
now I'm really confused
What happened to Bruce?
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Fly out at the wall
Dukes took a bad angle, then changed direction. He made the catch but planted the leg awkwardly, and then crashed into the wall. He got taken out on a cart.
Leatherpants seems to be fretting
good for him.
I want a hamburger. No, a cheeseburger. I want a hot dog. I want a milkshake. I want potato chips...
Jimbo looks like a bloated 15 year old...
I’m so glad he’s in Washington
"When I got my award, I just wore my usual stuff," Dunn said.
"Was it for the Reds organization or all of baseball?" Bruce said.
Nothing - he hit a ball that Dukes caught and on the same play Dukes hurt his knee
"When I got my award, I just wore my usual stuff," Dunn said.
"Was it for the Reds organization or all of baseball?" Bruce said.
Thanks
Gameday had Cherry at 3B and Griffey batting, with no sign of Bruce whatsoever.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Gameday still refuses to believe that Patterson is on base
classic.
I want a hamburger. No, a cheeseburger. I want a hot dog. I want a milkshake. I want potato chips...
LOL
It’s fixed now. Boy, was it confusing for awhile there.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Time to put a granddaughter to bed!
See you all later
Go Reds
"When I got my award, I just wore my usual stuff," Dunn said.
"Was it for the Reds organization or all of baseball?" Bruce said.
Hey, Pittsburgh lost
and the Astros are winning in the ninth, 6-1. So it’s up to the Reds to decide, are they gonna be a 4th place team or a last place team?
I want a hamburger. No, a cheeseburger. I want a hot dog. I want a milkshake. I want potato chips...
Hopefully...
...they don’t take 18 innings to make up their minds.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
WE ARE A 4TH PLACE TEAM!
...right Pops?

Who says we can't do small ball?
Three straight singles with two outs. Bako’s Catcher Witch gets player of the game.
Looking ahead
It’s good that Dukes is out because he’s their biggest home run threat, but do you realize that Ryan Zimmerman has been on the DL for like a month and still leads the Nats with 8 home runs? Yikes.
Can't wait
for “Baby It’s Gay Outside.”

Is Gameday screwed up again
or did BP really try a leadoff bunt last inning?
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
He did
The Nats announcers called it a gift, having your cleanup hitter try to bunt his way on. I was never a big anti-bunt person, but this team makes me more and more of one each day.
Good gravy
That’s insane. Was that his idea, or Dusty’s?
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

"I never should have given up the animation rights."
how bad is it for an announcer to have a scripted walk off call
you think that situation could trigger a little spontaneity
"I never should have given up the animation rights."
I dunno
I haven’t seen too many questionable calls. Unless he told Phillips to bunt, but Phillips might have tried that on his own.

Of course
The sacrifice might have been preferable. But considering that Bruce hasn’t had a sacrifice in a loooooong time, I’m ok with him swinging away.

No bunt for Phillips there!
Single to left field, and Cherry was chugging from second. The throw got to the plate in time, but bounced over Flores’s head.

Defending the NL Central
The three best records in the NL are all in the Central (Cubs, Cardinals, Brewers). And every single team in the NL West is under .500.
Jay Bruce had the #1 Web Gem
And Cherry’s day was good, but his brother went 3-4 with two home runs. Show off.
i wasnt all that impressed with bruce's catch
it looked unathletic to me. anyone else?
What do you mean, "blank slate"?
+1
He looked a little goofy.
I thought Griffey’s was better. He had to go a long distance and extend over the shoulders and it saved a run.
That's only because he's old and slow
BUT – Grif made the play…
"When I got my award, I just wore my usual stuff," Dunn said.
