Game 88: Reds vs Nationals

Washington Nationals at Cincinnati Reds, Jul 4, 2008 1:15 PM EDT

Next Game

Washington Nationals
@ Cincinnati Reds

Friday, Jul 4, 2008, 1:15 PM EDT
Great American Ball Park

Jason Bergmann vs Bronson Arroyo

Mostly cloudy with a 60-percent chance of rain. Winds blowing in from left field at 5-10 m.p.h. Game Time temperature: Around 75.

Complete Coverage >

W-L ERA WHIP K BB
2008 - Jason Bergmann 1-5 4.26 1.32 55 15

W-L ERA WHIP K BB
2008 - Bronson Arroyo 5-7 6.19 1.67 88 35

Rain might be a factor today, which is a shame since it's the 4th of July and all.  It'd be nice if Bronson could follow up his last start against the Indians with more of the same.  The bad news on Bergmann is that he hasn't given up more than one earned run in any of his last three starts.  The good news is that the Nats have still managed to lose two of those three starts.  He doesn't walk too many hitters, so aggressiveness at the plate may not be a bad thing.  Hopefully the Reds can make a dent off of this right-hander.

Happy Independence Day everybody (except for Gray)!  Be safe!  Don't go blowing any fingers off with firecrackers.  You need them for typing!

American Joey ‘Jaws’ Chestnut defends his mustard yellow belt aginst 6 time champion Takeru Kobayashi at the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eathing Contest. Also look for American Sonya Thomas, the Black Widow, to possibly challenge for third. It’s on ESPN at noon.

Why did they even activate Hopper?

Fay says he’s been dealing with the problem all year. He was clearly not 100%. Couldn’t throw, couldn’t swing the bat. Why activate him and put him on the roster? Were they really that desperate that they couldn’t do without Norris Hopper?

I havent been around for a few days

so i dont know if this has been discussed or not, but the USA Today did the Josh Hamilton story all over again, only this time it has some stuff about his experience in the Reds’ clubhouse:

He has ventured out a few times with teammates and says he feels more accepted by his Texas teammates than in Cincinnati last year, when no one invited him out. He sensed jealousy and perhaps resentment over the attention his comeback story received

“I even heard comments that I was signing too many autographs for the fans,” he says. “It just got worse as the year went on.”

The discord played no factor in the trade, but, Krivsky said: “There were issues in the clubhouse. Maybe that stuff would have gone by the boards had he stayed.”

If that’s true, it’s pretty embarassing. Which player made a comment that Hamilton was signing too many autographs? As a fan, that’s a dusturbing sentiment.

Maybe he’d have hit a triple.

Arroyo was at 95 pitches

He probably could have gone another inning, but I’m ok with pinch-hitting. And there’s the out.

that ohio sport news now saying...
While both local and national outlets have reported this deal is bogus, it is entirely possible that it is merely on hold.

Obviously nothing would happen today on the Arroyo front (pitching, singing today) but don’t rule it out completely.

Keep your eye on Weathers though. The calm before the storm?

I have it from a very good source...

That Robert Mugabe will resign as President-for-Life of Zimbabwe and become manager of the Reds.

You heard it here first.

Arroyo on the rain delay...
"This is the best I’ve felt during a day game," said Arroyo, whose last start was a day game and whose next outing in Chicago also is scheduled to start during the day. "I think the start being pushed back a couple of hours helped. It gave me a chance to wake up and feel a little more normal."

apparantly Bronson

had time for a couple of long island iced teas and a bromo and vodkas. good to see that # milliom+ that Bob’s paying for Corey to come in a rest Dunn is paying off big. Why is Andy Phillips on this team?
Anyway Happy 4th again.

Sorry to have missed this game. Nice to see Dunn with a couple hits. I see that Andy is still batting like .143 or something…Corey still hanging in there at .188 – excellent productvivty for 3Million

"When I got my award, I just wore my usual stuff," Dunn said.

I celebrated by going with my wife, son-in-law, daughter and grandson to the game today.
I’ll put some pics and a report up later. My wife got this picture of the Bruce taking a pitch.
