Seriously?

A second baseman OPSing .748 in AAA and a reliever with an ERA+ of 95 and a WHIP of 1.7? That’s the best we could do, even paying the rest of Griffey’s salary this season?

I'm not having even a mediocre year.

2B Danny Richar and RHP Nick Masset; some say we also pick up Griffey’s remaining salary this season.

Thanks!

Why on earth do we need a underwhelming 2Bman ? What was the point of this trade? We don’t even get any money out of the deal because we’re still paying Griffey? Boy.. they must have really wanted Kenny out of Cincy.

There was a lot of posturing from myself and others

saying that the club should just take what they can get for Griffey. But this sucks.

Dunn rumours
THURSDAY, 10:33am: SI.com’s Jon Heyman says the Reds seek players such as Jeff Niemann and Jeremy Hellickson in a Dunn trade. Niemann probably could be had.

WEDNESDAY, 10:13pm: Finally, some Dunn rumors. ESPN’s Jayson Stark says the Rays are talking with the Reds about Dunn, though he’s their Plan B to Jason Bay. I imagine Dunn would DH for the Rays.

9:25pm: According to SI.com’s Jon Heyman, the Diamondbacks offered Chad Tracy to the Reds for Adam Dunn. He says another NL team has also inquired on Dunn.

Good luck Grif and Good luck SOX

Now only 4.5 hours of agonizing and fretting left.
I am amazed that he accepted the trade and even more amazed that we got anything for the aged star. Not a bad deal, the Reds only have to pick up 4M of salary. This is a big win for Jocketty.
I wonder if any pitchers ala Weathers/Fogg/Affeldt are being shopped.

Let's see...

4/7: BP
4/19: BP
4/27: Keppinger
5/3-5/6: BP
5/13: BP
5/29, 6/2-6/4: Bruce
6/17-6/18: Bruce
6/19: BP
6/25-6/26: BP
6/30: Dunn
7/13: Dunn
7/29: Dunn

So total count for the third spot:
Griffey 89, Phillips 10, Bruce 6, Dunn 3

Right

It’s gotta be one or the other. If it’s a salary dump, fine we’ll take shitty players, but the Sox gotta foot Griffey’s bill. If the Reds are paying, then give us a piece that’s potentially useful. I’d take someone like Maloney. I mean, it solved the Junior problem, sort of, but in kind of a crummy way.

Not entirely true, as I see it. $4M is what we owe him for the rest of the season. We’d be buying him out for an additional 4 after the season is over.

by RedStalk on Jul 31, 2008 11:47 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think so

unless it is stipulated in the trade agreement. They should also have to pay the 4 mil if they decide not to pick up his option

Not a bad return IF the Reds weren't kicking in salary.

Even if they are, not much was going to come back.

Richar was behind Alberto Callaspo and Emilio Bonifacio, both of whem were traded, on Arizona’s depth chart before being dealt to Chicago for OF Aaron Cunningham in a deal I liked in favor in the Diamondbacks. The Sox envisioned Richar as a replacement for Tadahito Iguchi, but that didn’t work out well. Still Richar has hit well in the minors and has had decent OBP and SB numbers. He can play a little SS and 3B.

Masset was acquired with John Danks and Jake Rasner for Brandon McCarthy and David Paisano. Kenny Williams has a thing for hard throwers and Masset is one, having hit 98 mph. He starred in the Mexican Pacific League the winter before he was acquired, piquing Williams interest in him. He has a plus fastball, a hard mid-80s curve and a change and a cutter. His command is erratic. He was an 8th-round pick in the forgettable 2000 draft.

Both players are young enough to have value, but my expectations are quite tempered.

We Are ... Marshall!

So will Griff come back next yer to the Reds...

as a cheaper, part timer?

Some media outlets have categorized Griffey as untradeable because of the widespread perception he would insist on having his $16.5 million option exercised in conjunction with a deal. But sources said Griffey was willing to consider returning to Cincinnati for a lower annual price if the Reds might consider tacking an extra year onto his deal.

Dunn/Diamond Backs trade rumors:

IF we do trade Dunn to the D’bags, the only way I will be excited about the trade is if we get Daniel Schlereth, son of former Denver Bronco great and current ESPN analyst Mark Schlereth.

Daniel Schlereth

LHP | Arizona

Selected by: Diamondbacks
Round: 1
PK(OVR): 26(26)

Ultimate Role: Setup man

Summary: Schlereth didn’t sign last year as a draft-eligible sophomore when he was taken by Oakland in the 8th round. He clearly made the right decision as he’s about to cash in with top-50 money, perhaps even first-round money. The son of ESPN football analyst Mark Schlereth, Daniel has seen his stuff jump up in the last few weeks leading up to the draft, with both his fastball and breaking ball ticking up to 65 or 70 on the grading scale. Schlereth’s delivery is another story, as there’s a ton of effort in it and it has more recoil than a plumber’s snake. He’s already had Tommy John surgery. He could be in the big leagues this year and should be able to get left-handed hitters out with either of his two pitches; his range of possible outcomes is small, however, from left-handed specialist to dominant setup man.

That would be awesome!
He is 22 and might make the majors by seasons end…. might be untouchable but, Dunn is leading the league in HR now

UPDATE

Just got this back:

Jeremy,

I appreciate you sending in a report about this. We’re aware of this behavior and realize it’s neither expected or ideal. Several folks have already sent us similar reports so we’re already working on a solution.

In the meantime, yes, I would recommend right-clicking links from threads so that when you return you haven’t lost your status reading the comments.

Thanks,
(clockwerks)

So they’re working on it. And I got a response within an hour and a half, color me impressed with their responsiveness.

Do you use firefox?

If so, it’s easy to right click and select “open link in new tab” on any link. You can also set it up so that middle-clicking opens a link in a new tab. It’s great when you want to open a link, but not lose your current page.

You may be able to do the same thing in IE, but I don’t know, since I haven’t used IE in years.

IM BACK

Wooooo

What about if we trade Dunn to the Rays for Jacob McGee:
He is ranked by Baseball Prospectus (in 2007) as a 4 star prospect, number 6 overall in the Rays system at the time. I kinda luddat guy, knowing he was drafted in 2004, he is eligible for trade, and Davis and Wade aren’t (likely untouchable anyways). What do you guys think?

Full Name: Jacob D. McGee
Born: August 6,1986 in San Jose, California
Height: 6-3 Weight: 190 Bats: Left Throws: Left
High School: Reed (Sparks,NV)

Drafted: Selected by Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 5th Round (135th overall) of 2004 amateur entry draft (June-Reg)

(the above information came from The Baseball Cube)

No Dunn to Tampa Bay?

Posted by Jayson Stark at ESPN.com:

It now looks as if the Rays won’t make a deal of any kind between now and the deadline. According to sources who have spoken with them, they’ve backed off on Adam Dunn because he makes their lineup too left-handed, and they’ve been informed by Pittsburgh that Jason Bay is likely to go somewhere else.

The Rays and Colorado had already agreed Wednesday that they didn’t have what it takes to get Brian Fuentes, if the Rockies decide to trade him at all Thursday. And that looks less likely all the time.

Happy

Happy for Griff, he deserves to at least play in the playoffs one more time.

In my mind, this was a “nice thing to do” trade, a la Ray Borque going to the Col Avalanche and winning the Stanley Cup. Griffey is too great a figure in baseball history to finish below .500 in cincinnati, get his option declined, and go begging for a part time gig next season. This at least gives him a shot.

As far as what we got in the deal, I could really care less.

I really wish we would just call up Dickerson already

but I guess it isn’t going to happen until the roster expands, since Hairston is coming off the DL. Demoting Patterson for him sounds like the way to go. I’d even rather see him starting in CF, with Hairston at short for a while and Keppinger the fill-in, since Keppinger hasn’t exactly been excelling recently.

Other than an 8-game stint in AA in 2006

Masset’s not been very good as a SP. He’s more of a two-pitch pitcher—fastball and curve. The cutter and change aren’t above average. He brings some serious heat, though. If there is such thing as a situational righty (roogy?), he might be it.

griffey is still griffey

he brings a big name and marketing possibilities, and he has OPSed .877 since May 30 with 10 homers in 51 games with a .503 SLG. He had a horrendous start to the year, and he can’t play defense to save his life, but he’s still got the ability to provide an awesome DH to an AL team. We gave that up for $4M plus what appear to be a couple scrub minor leaguers.

I don’t really think Chicago got the better end of the deal (Griffey has almost no place to play there and appears to be a horrible match), but as a Reds fan nothing excites me about our haul. So, for me, it blows.

tells the fans that he’d rather be out on his boat, makes vague threats to managers who double switch him, whines about being moved out of center, and intimates that he might raise hell if he’s moved down in the order?
