Seriously?

A second baseman OPSing .748 in AAA and a reliever with an ERA+ of 95 and a WHIP of 1.7? That’s the best we could do, even paying the rest of Griffey’s salary this season?

I'm not having even a mediocre year.

Thanks!

Why on earth do we need a underwhelming 2Bman ? What was the point of this trade? We don’t even get any money out of the deal because we’re still paying Griffey? Boy.. they must have really wanted Kenny out of Cincy.

Dunn rumours
THURSDAY, 10:33am: SI.com’s Jon Heyman says the Reds seek players such as Jeff Niemann and Jeremy Hellickson in a Dunn trade. Niemann probably could be had.

WEDNESDAY, 10:13pm: Finally, some Dunn rumors. ESPN’s Jayson Stark says the Rays are talking with the Reds about Dunn, though he’s their Plan B to Jason Bay. I imagine Dunn would DH for the Rays.

9:25pm: According to SI.com’s Jon Heyman, the Diamondbacks offered Chad Tracy to the Reds for Adam Dunn. He says another NL team has also inquired on Dunn.

Good luck Grif and Good luck SOX

Now only 4.5 hours of agonizing and fretting left.
I am amazed that he accepted the trade and even more amazed that we got anything for the aged star. Not a bad deal, the Reds only have to pick up 4M of salary. This is a big win for Jocketty.
I wonder if any pitchers ala Weathers/Fogg/Affeldt are being shopped.

Let's see...

4/7: BP
4/19: BP
4/27: Keppinger
5/3-5/6: BP
5/13: BP
5/29, 6/2-6/4: Bruce
6/17-6/18: Bruce
6/19: BP
6/25-6/26: BP
6/30: Dunn
7/13: Dunn
7/29: Dunn

So total count for the third spot:
Griffey 89, Phillips 10, Bruce 6, Dunn 3

Right

It’s gotta be one or the other. If it’s a salary dump, fine we’ll take shitty players, but the Sox gotta foot Griffey’s bill. If the Reds are paying, then give us a piece that’s potentially useful. I’d take someone like Maloney. I mean, it solved the Junior problem, sort of, but in kind of a crummy way.

Not entirely true, as I see it. $4M is what we owe him for the rest of the season. We’d be buying him out for an additional 4 after the season is over.

i think this is a bad deal for both teams. griffey has no logical place to play for the white sox, and we’re getting scrubs in return, but we still have to pay griffey’s salary. makes not much sense.

Not a bad return IF the Reds weren't kicking in salary.

Even if they are, not much was going to come back.

Richar was behind Alberto Callaspo and Emilio Bonifacio, both of whem were traded, on Arizona’s depth chart before being dealt to Chicago for OF Aaron Cunningham in a deal I liked in favor in the Diamondbacks. The Sox envisioned Richar as a replacement for Tadahito Iguchi, but that didn’t work out well. Still Richar has hit well in the minors and has had decent OBP and SB numbers. He can play a little SS and 3B.

Masset was acquired with John Danks and Jake Rasner for Brandon McCarthy and David Paisano. Kenny Williams has a thing for hard throwers and Masset is one, having hit 98 mph. He starred in the Mexican Pacific League the winter before he was acquired, piquing Williams interest in him. He has a plus fastball, a hard mid-80s curve and a change and a cutter. His command is erratic. He was an 8th-round pick in the forgettable 2000 draft.

Both players are young enough to have value, but my expectations are quite tempered.

We Are ... Marshall!

So will Griff come back next yer to the Reds...

as a cheaper, part timer?

Some media outlets have categorized Griffey as untradeable because of the widespread perception he would insist on having his $16.5 million option exercised in conjunction with a deal. But sources said Griffey was willing to consider returning to Cincinnati for a lower annual price if the Reds might consider tacking an extra year onto his deal.

Dunn/Diamond Backs trade rumors:

IF we do trade Dunn to the D’bags, the only way I will be excited about the trade is if we get Daniel Schlereth, son of former Denver Bronco great and current ESPN analyst Mark Schlereth.

Daniel Schlereth

LHP | Arizona

Selected by: Diamondbacks
Round: 1
PK(OVR): 26(26)

Ultimate Role: Setup man

Summary: Schlereth didn’t sign last year as a draft-eligible sophomore when he was taken by Oakland in the 8th round. He clearly made the right decision as he’s about to cash in with top-50 money, perhaps even first-round money. The son of ESPN football analyst Mark Schlereth, Daniel has seen his stuff jump up in the last few weeks leading up to the draft, with both his fastball and breaking ball ticking up to 65 or 70 on the grading scale. Schlereth’s delivery is another story, as there’s a ton of effort in it and it has more recoil than a plumber’s snake. He’s already had Tommy John surgery. He could be in the big leagues this year and should be able to get left-handed hitters out with either of his two pitches; his range of possible outcomes is small, however, from left-handed specialist to dominant setup man.

That would be awesome!
He is 22 and might make the majors by seasons end…. might be untouchable but, Dunn is leading the league in HR now

Just got this back:

Jeremy,

I appreciate you sending in a report about this. We’re aware of this behavior and realize it’s neither expected or ideal. Several folks have already sent us similar reports so we’re already working on a solution.

In the meantime, yes, I would recommend right-clicking links from threads so that when you return you haven’t lost your status reading the comments.

Thanks,

Do you use firefox?

If so, it’s easy to right click and select “open link in new tab” on any link. You can also set it up so that middle-clicking opens a link in a new tab. It’s great when you want to open a link, but not lose your current page.

You may be able to do the same thing in IE, but I don’t know, since I haven’t used IE in years.

IM BACK

Wooooo

What about if we trade Dunn to the Rays for Jacob McGee:
He is ranked by Baseball Prospectus (in 2007) as a 4 star prospect, number 6 overall in the Rays system at the time. I kinda luddat guy, knowing he was drafted in 2004, he is eligible for trade, and Davis and Wade aren’t (likely untouchable anyways). What do you guys think?

Full Name: Jacob D. McGee
Born: August 6,1986 in San Jose, California
Height: 6-3 Weight: 190 Bats: Left Throws: Left
High School: Reed (Sparks,NV)

Drafted: Selected by Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 5th Round (135th overall) of 2004 amateur entry draft (June-Reg)

(the above information came from The Baseball Cube)

No Dunn to Tampa Bay?

Posted by Jayson Stark at ESPN.com:

It now looks as if the Rays won’t make a deal of any kind between now and the deadline. According to sources who have spoken with them, they’ve backed off on Adam Dunn because he makes their lineup too left-handed, and they’ve been informed by Pittsburgh that Jason Bay is likely to go somewhere else.

The Rays and Colorado had already agreed Wednesday that they didn’t have what it takes to get Brian Fuentes, if the Rockies decide to trade him at all Thursday. And that looks less likely all the time.

Happy for Griff, he deserves to at least play in the playoffs one more time.

In my mind, this was a “nice thing to do” trade, a la Ray Borque going to the Col Avalanche and winning the Stanley Cup. Griffey is too great a figure in baseball history to finish below .500 in cincinnati, get his option declined, and go begging for a part time gig next season. This at least gives him a shot.

Masset’s not been very good as a SP. He’s more of a two-pitch pitcher—fastball and curve. The cutter and change aren’t above average. He brings some serious heat, though. If there is such thing as a situational righty (roogy?), he might be it.

griffey is still griffey

he brings a big name and marketing possibilities, and he has OPSed .877 since May 30 with 10 homers in 51 games with a .503 SLG. He had a horrendous start to the year, and he can’t play defense to save his life, but he’s still got the ability to provide an awesome DH to an AL team. We gave that up for $4M plus what appear to be a couple scrub minor leaguers.

I don’t really think Chicago got the better end of the deal (Griffey has almost no place to play there and appears to be a horrible match), but as a Reds fan nothing excites me about our haul. So, for me, it blows.

This isn’t a good trade for either team. But I don’t know that we’ve screwed up. The Sox have, for the reasons you give. But we still save $4mm, and Griffey wasn’t going to fetch anything worthwhile. He’s basically replacement level at this point.

Speaking of where folks are from...

Danny Richar is from the same town in the Dominican Republic, La Romana as EdE. And they were born in the same year. I am guessing they know each other already. Maybe he bolsters our community of young Domincans and with the guidance of CoCo they all get better together over the next few years.

Another thought, not sure if it has been mentioned yet, Griffey chasing Sosa will be a much bigger deal in Chi-Town. Not that winning teams (or teams in general) in Chicago have trouble putting fans in the seats.

Tanzen!

Very nice commentary by Marty about Jr. Too bad he waited until the guy is traded. Interestingly sMarty was adamant that Adam Dunn would not be traded in the light of Grif’s departure.

Best discussion between those two guys in a long time. Tracy kept his mouth shut, asked probing questions and Marty prestty humble.

Some Canadian reporter
says:
Acquiring Ken Griffey, Jr., could be the move that puts the White Sox over the top. But it might not be their last deal of the day. According to one high-ranking Major League source, the White Sox – who now find themselves with a surplus of DH-outfield types – are prepared to use the depth provided by Junior’s acquisition to add pitching help for the stretch drive.

The source suggested that Williams is now talking to clubs that might be held up by the song and dance involving Manny Ramirez, particularly the Florida Marlins.

[In Cincinnati] Griffey wore his father’s #30, not #24 like he did in Seattle. The number 24 was already retired in honor of Tony Perez and it was not brought out of retirement for Griffey.

...

Griffey switched his uniform number in 2006, from 30 to 3, to honor his three kids.

Dan Szy... weighs in

http://www.baseballthinkfactory.org/files/oracle/discussion/white_sox_acquired_griffey/

The Reds get a surprisingly decent haul for the last few months of Griffey’s contract. Neither Masset or Richar have any star potential, but they’re a good step above the random A-baller you frequently see in these types of trades. God knows the Reds can always use an extra arm and Richar, a dark horse candidate for a job last winter, provides additional infield depth, which the Reds don’t have, as witnessed by Paul Janish being pushed for a while into a role he was completely not ready for.

I was thinking all along

that I’d have been happy with a random A-baller for Griffey, but I thought no team would even trade us a random A-baller for him. So, I for one am happy that we got something for him at all. I don’t know what kind of haul the people who are upset about this trade thought we were going to get, but I think this is about the best we could do. I’m not considering the money we’re sending the Sox, but until Bobby C proves he has a spending limit, I don’t really care about the money.

on the cash

when you are desperately hoping that the team will find a way to afford Dunn, it’s hard to see them part with any cash. On the bright side though, they have saved $4 million. I’m going to enter my happy place and imagine that is enough savings to sign both Dunn and Ellis.

It’s money we already owed. Maybe this is just semantics, but it seems like a lot of people here are opposed to the principle of paying off salary for a departed player. All that matters is that we saved $4mm. We’ll need it given our salary structure next year. Think of it as money earmarked for BP’s raise!

While I was enjoying my Sam Adams and mixed nuts, I’m pretty sure Bill Bray was in the lobby bar too, with his wife/girlfriend, and some bald guy in a suit. I believe that this is a good move for the Reds and dumb one for the Sox

By the end of the season there is strong evidence (look at 08’s production and Jr’s been healthy) that he would have limped out of town and no one would have wanted him . I agree with Red Menace this is a good deal for the Reds. Why would anyone want an aging ,245 hitting corner outfielder with warning track power,an enormous ego and big contract. A graceful and appropriate exit for Jr. Maybe he’ll get a ring. Although it looks doubtful if this is the kind of deals that the Sox are pulling off.

OK Jay show us your stuff.

For the record

I was quoting someone. I haven’t said it’s a good deal for the Reds.

But I’ll say now it’s not a bad deal. I’m in the camp with those who didn’t think we could get anything for him. The not-quite-a-dump/not-quite-a-trade doesn’t bother me much.

by Red Menace on Jul 31, 2008 4:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sorry didn't mean to misquote you.

I reiterate this opens the door for Jay to move to right field Hopefully Jerry Jr. can continue his career year but not eonough to get any kind of a multi year deal. I think Copat goes south and Dickerson should come up and get a taste of the show.

well this season

it looks like manny’s not costing anything because the Sox are paying the rest of his contract.

Jones is making 14.7 mil
Pierre is making 8 mil
Kemp is making 406 thou
Ethier is making 424 thou

2 of those dude shouldn’t really play. Guess which ones?

A farewell:

Griffey
your swing was so pretty,
your legs really fragile,
it was so sad
you were no longer agile

you had a great smile
and a kid’s playful heart,
it was so sad
the media tore you apart

so now on to Chicago
we wish you the best
cause there was no way in hell
your option we would vest

Latest on the Manny/Bay trade...
3:39pm: Bob Nightengale has the Bucs getting Craig Hansen and Brandon Moss from the Red Sox and Andy LaRoche and Bryan Morris from the Dodgers, correcting what looks like a typo in the Rosenthal report.

3:37pm: Rosenthal has details:

Pirates outfielder Jason Bay is headed to the Red Sox. The Pirates will receive Andy LaRoche and right-hander Bryan Morris from the Dodgers and outfielder Damien Moss and releiver Craig Hansen from the Red Sox.

He adds that the Red Sox will pay the $7MM remaining on Manny’s contract.

They did.

It seems like they essentially got 2 players for Jason Bay, and two more to play along with the Red Sox desperation to unload Manny. I’d be really happy if I were a Bucs fan….......of course, they’re the Bucs, I’m sure they’ll still suck for another 10 years.

Gave up two prospects and $7 million to swap Manny for Bay? Does that seems excessive to anyone else?

but they do get bay for next year, at what i think amounts to 14.5 million (if you factor in what they are paying manny the rest of this year)

Peter Abraham says Manny’s team options were removed and he has agreed to decline arbitration.

I guess they get two draft picks in exchange for giving up two players?

Sad Sad day for Reds fans

Now I admit Griffey JR “ain’t as good as he once was” this trade was awful, and a sad way for the Griffey era to come to a close.

Meanwhile we are basically paying Griffey’s salary for the rest of the year to watch Dusty’s manlove Corey Patterson start every game the rest of the year.

And then the Red’s don’t make a move with Weathers, Affeldt, Fogg, or any of the other flotsam and jetsam that makes up this last place team.

If they don’t resign Dunn, I might just stop watching them all together.

Better that he go out under his own power than to not be signed and shown the door

Besides you’re right he ain’t as good as he once was so they moved him while he’s still good once as he ever was.

This was a nice move for Griff

The Reds don’t get anything out of it, but he was gone next year no matter what. Guys like Weathers,Fogg and Arroyo are more waiver period players and I expect 2/3 of them are moved.

by Johnnypronto on Jul 31, 2008 5:34 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I hope your right

but I would bet against you. Affeldt and Weathers have friendly contracts so they would get claimed. Maybe Bronson’s contract would scare teams away from claiming him.
