Trade Deadline Thread

How about we make this the trade deadline thread throughout tonight and Thursday?

From Jayson Stark at 11:13 p.m.:

The Reds and Rays talked Wednesday night about a deal that would send Adam Dunn to Tampa Bay. According to a source with knowledge of the discussions, those talks haven't yet moved beyond the conversation stage. But that conversation is expected to resume Thursday morning. Clubs that have spoken with Tampa Bay believe the Rays don't want to rush into anything as long as Jason Bay remains an option. But they now have Dunn on their plate as an intriguing Plan B.

The Rays have some knockout prospects. Let's see if they're willing to part with any of them.

with jason bay likely moving in the manny trade

this could definitely happen. What can we get for Dunn? im not really very familiar with their system outside david price, and im sure he’s way out of our league.

What do you mean, "blank slate"?

Yeah, Palm Beach Post has the breakdown

(as I’m sure everyone else has seen already)

Marlins get: Manny Ramirez, cash, prospect from Red Sox
Red Sox get: Jason Bay, John Grabow
Pirates get: Ryan Tucker, Jeremy Hermida, one prospect from Red Sox, perhaps another prospect from Marlins

by Brian B on Jul 31, 2008 12:09 AM EDT up reply actions

how bad do the Braves look now?

hmm… Teixeira for Kotchman and Marek… Manny for Jason Bay and John Grabow… Bay for Hermida and Tucker… Hermida and Tucker for Manny…

One of these things is not like the other. One of these things doesn’t belong.

Pity the Pirates fans, too

Though I suppose they’re used to it.

Hermida might be good.

He could break out away from Dolphins Stadium and put up an OPS near .900, while playing a more important defensive position than Manny or Bay, and playing it better. Maybe even CF.

Yeah

Hermida will out perform Bay, just watch. And they prolly got Tucker + one other prospect. If I was the BoSox I would not even included Pit but I guess they wanted Grabow.

maybe

but do we ever get used to it?

I'm betting Price, Hellickson, and Davis will be off-limits.

If I were to guess, I’d say the most likely names to pop up would be Reid Brignac and Jeff Niemann.

And Carl Crawford, of course.

by Geki on Jul 30, 2008 11:34 PM EDT reply actions

Aw hell

Who was it that pined for Crawford? That couldn’t really happen could it?

How can such a good looking man be so bad at getting to first base?

Never mind, it's late

And my mind is mush.

Great minds think alike and so do ours.

My exact thoguth when I heard the Dunn to TB rumor was Niemann and Brignac.

hey rays fan here also reds fan as well

prospects that are off limits are price, hellickson and davis so most likely jeff niemann and reid brignac would be the most likely players being traded in either the jason bay deal that still could happen with tampa or the adam dunn trade which i hear is just kinda a bluff right now unless jason bay gets dealt in part of the manny ramirez deal

longo=ROY. friedman=Executive of the year. Maddon=Manager of the year. Rays=WS champs 08!

what about John Jaso?

A random sampling of some box scores indicated to me that he has improved defensively behind the plate this year.

If anyone's looking for a catcher

Chad Moeller is available.

by BubbaFan on Jul 31, 2008 12:05 AM EDT reply actions

I really did

With the market for catchers being what it is, I didn’t think the Yanks could get a better catcher.

But apparently, Pudge used his no-trade to specify that he wanted to go to the Yankees, so the Tiggers’ hands were tied.

by BubbaFan on Jul 31, 2008 12:15 AM EDT up reply actions

Well

I guess Brignac + another prospect wouldn’t be too bad.

Maybe buy low on Desmond Jennings.

I would also rather have one or two decent low minors projection guys over Niemann.

by kennythered on Jul 31, 2008 12:31 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah I like Jennings as well

He’s had an injury-plagued 08, and he’s out for the season. But he looks like he could be a true stud leadoff hitter.

Brignac, Jennings and a lower prospect for Dunn? That might work. Of course, I’d rather Dunn is not traded.

by cesarhernandez on Jul 31, 2008 1:21 AM EDT up reply actions

I think I might like these three

Brignac (SS)
Niemann (SP)
Jaso©

I don’t think that’s asking for too much, especially since they won’t need any of those players for their run at the playoffs and they’ll have to take their lumps at MLB before they’ll have value. Plus, the Rays would get two draft picks. We might still be undervaluing the return Dunn should bring.

Fay's waste of cyberspace.

Let me ask you this: Has home run champ ever been allowed to walk as a free agent?

Sure. Adrian Beltre. Remember?

by Brian B on Jul 31, 2008 12:33 AM EDT reply actions

Uh, is that an elephant?

Mr. Fay, THE home run king is currently an unsigned free agent.

In August.

Did he really forget that the all-time home run leader - asterisk or no - is a free agent?

by bbjones on Aug 2, 2008 12:33 AM EDT up reply actions

on a similar note

there was a little stat factoid in the Dispatch on Friday. it was about great home run hitters who have changed teams. Hank Aaron played for Atl and Mil, Jr played in Sea, Cin, and now Chi, Mays played for the Giants and Mets and so on and so on. but alarmingly absent from the list was the ALL-TIME LEADER IN HOME RUNS, who played for the Pirates and Giants. its like they are already starting to try to change history. when did Dick Cheney take over baseball?

please dont shit on my dreams. i dont want shit on my dreams.

According to mlbtraderumors.com

11:21pm: Heyman says there’s some prospect haggling but the teams are optimistic a deal will get done. The Marlins and Red Sox seem certain to make a swap, while the Pirates are trying to enhance their part. They are still at risk of being replaced by another club.

Gordon Edes of the Boston Globe thinks a deal may be close, but not done. So we’ve got journalists on both sides of the fence, but everyone seems optimistic.

I wonder if the Reds jumped in with Dunn? Lowrie, Hermida, Tucker for Dunn and Affeldt. Hell we would even throw in Weathers to one of them for another decent prospect.

by kennythered on Jul 31, 2008 12:51 AM EDT reply actions

my trade day guess

Dunn stays
Fogg to Rox
Affeldt to Mets
Weathers to Rays
Bako to Marlins
griff trade ends up being for 2 pitching prospects

Jerry Crasnick lists some of the deadline deals that have backfired over the years

The Trade comes in at #5. He gives Red Reporter a shout-out with this little nugget:

A contributor to the Red Reporter blog weighs in with the following sentiment: “I’ve thought about it, and I can honestly say that this is the worst trade the Reds have made in my lifetime.”
