Mets borrow Andy Phillips, then return him to the Reds

Andy Phillips is back. The Mets DFA'd him on Tuesday. (They needed a spot starter after the doubleheader against the Yanks Friday.)
Andy did not clear waivers; the Reds claimed him. He is expected to be with the team in time to play in tonight's game.

Daryl Thompson was optioned back to Louisville to clear a roster spot for him.
From Trent:
"It's the right thing to do," Thompson said.Baker said they weren't sure of their pitching plans after the day off on Monday. If the Reds stay on rotation, they wouldn't need a fifth starter until Saturday.
Oh, and Happy Independence Day!

Well, welcome back Andy
I don’t know that sending Thompson down was the right thing to do, unless it was basically just an inverse of what the Mets were doing. We weren’t going to need a fifth starter for over a week, and Phillips will give us depth off the bench. It means we won’t have to send Javy up batting right-handed anymore, but I’d like it better if A. Phillips could get a hit every now and then.

5 or 6
He didn’t get to play much. Even when they put him in the starting lineup, they ended up pulling him for a pinch-hitter early.

He must be a REALLY good teammate
Because I’m tired of his out-making ability.

am i the only one concernded that Josh Fogg will be the 5th starter?
I think Thompson is just as good as Fogg right now, and Thompson will only get better, while at best Fogg is an ERA+ 90 type pitcher, and he has failed to demostrate that this year. Plus I have tickets for Foggs start in Chicago on Tuesday. I just feel that this was a quick demotion, he had one good start, one medicore start (which was good for 5 innings, but they tried to stertch him out for 6) and one bad start.

Godd opportunity for Thompson to back down and work on his game.
Fogg or Belizzle it doesn’t matter, hell you could bring Homer back up. There is an obvious void in the rotation. I wonder why DickPole doesn’t give Affeldt another shot?

since when did Shortstop hack your account?
Plus I am guessing the Reds are showcasing Affeldt, and converting him, midseason, to a starter would do nothing for his trade value.
I just feel that Thompson will pitch as well as the others, this is a last place team, and let him work it out in the big leagues, unless he completly loses cofidence and just gets shelled everytime he goes out there, and it may be for the better in 2009.

All signs point to Thompson as having a very mature sense of self confidence.
I see no pressing reason to trade Affeldt, even if he isn’t a candidate to start.
Where the hell did shortstop go anyway…?

i am guessing they are going to try and move Affeldt
if they spend the next 4 to 6 weeks dicking around with stretching him out to be a starter, his numbers will get worse. I am guessing that he and Weathers will be on the move to some team looking to add a little bullpen depth.
