Game 108: Reds at Astros
Cincinnati Reds at Houston Astros, Jul 29, 2008 8:05 PM EDT

Ah, gold ol' Brian Moehler. Remember way back in 2002 when he was one of the Reds big deadline acquisitions? And then he posted a 2-4 record with a 6.02 ERA? That was a special season.
The latest rumor from Jayson Stark is that Arroyo is off the market. I'm fine with that, and not just because of the last 5 starts. I probably would have been fine with him being dealt, but he's not a bad pitcher to have in the fold. My only real concern is that he has thrown the most pitches in the Majors over the last 3 seasons. Of course, that's only because Harang has missed his last two starts.
I'm really hoping the Reds get something going here soon. When they are in a stretch like this, this team is painful to watch.

The world has been trying to keep me from watching this game
Gridlock downtown, accidents on the highway, cashier’s scale broken at the grocery store. But I’m here. On time. I’m sticking through this game come hell or high water (or earthquakes in LA). Go Reds! Vamos los Rojos!

Teixeira to Dodgers?
It’s being reported by several sources, including here.
According to an American League source, the Angels and Braves are close to a deal that would send Mark Teixeira to the Angels for first baseman Casey Kotchman and pitcher Stephen Marek.

Halos
Arrgh.
Obviously, I’m still thinking about the supposed Dodgers-Red Sox trade. (I wonder what’s happening with that, if Teixeira is off the market?)
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
there was a rumor
that the Dodgers would get Manny, the BoSox would get Tex, and the Braves would get prospects. but it looks like Tex is going to the halos, so whatevs.

he said he'd accept any trade if his option wasn't picked up
it helps boston and it would boost attendance for the reds the rest of the season, and gives us the same two draft picks

yeah i know he said that
but he says alot of things. and i think if the chips were on the table, he would choose a shot at the Series.
and i dont know how much it would boost attendance. he seems like the kind of guy most Cincy fans would crucify. i think he would seen as Adam Dunn with an attitude.

I really, really, wish they keep Dunn
mainly because I’m going to the Nats series this weekend. But I don’t understand how the Reds are handling Dunn. Why don’t they put his image everywhere and make him a superstar? Why is he batting 5th and being quiet…the guy is quote-a-minute and very accessible, but the Reds PR doesn’t seem to want to turn him into The Man.
Dunn has been everything the Reds have asked of him so far. He’s playing solid D. Hes tied for the lead in HR. Why oh why can we not market a team around him?

The Reds could use Manny's right-handed bat
But he’s a terrible outfielder, and all that “Manny being Manny” stuff….ugh. He’s getting worse and worse. The Sox really can’t afford to lose him, but he’s becoming a clubhouse cancer. He’s pissing his teammates off, not to mention the front office.
The worst thing, IMO, is that every once in awhile he makes an amazing play, and you get a glimpse of the player he could have been if he actually tried.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
What did you think of losing Ohlendorf?
I tend to keep track of him because he’s very close with my officemate. They grew up together. When he was called up, he told her on G chat while I was in the office. Pretty cool.
I’m pumped about getting to make fun of him now that he’s with the Pirates.

The general consensus
is that the Pirates got robbed.
Ohlendorf wasn’t that impressive. Perhaps he’s just raw and needs some more cooking time down in the minors. But he’s a right-handed relief pitcher, and the Yankees have more of those than they know what to do with. What they need is southpaws, and that’s what they got with Marte. They’ve been trying to get Marte back for years.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

Take him to .183/.211/.322. His OPS+ would be 36, which would move in front of Eric Owens for the lowest OPS+ ever by a Reds outfielder with a minimum of 200 PAs. The all time lowest was Bob Dernier in 1989 with an OPS+ of 27. BTW, Wily Mo Pena is currently 5th on the all time list with an OPS+ of 33 this season.

I often think how different the world would be if Hitler had not been turned down when he applied for art school. - George Carlin
Dunn's got him since the AS break, but Griffey has definitely been good over the two week period.
and I’d like to know what Griffey’s potential is. He plays well in spurts, but honestly he’s not that good of a player anymore.
It's a lousy night to be an atheist!
I think your definition of potential is different than mine.
Griffey has the potential at the present to to drive in runs and not make outs. Griffey does not have the potential to develop his career and get better than he is right now, while just about every other option does.
I'll give you the not make outs
The driving in runs is iffy. But my question is, does it really make a difference this season? And do you want another season of watching Griffey’s skills deteriorate? I’m not trying to be a dick about it, but it seems like now is as good of a time as any to end it. I doubt it happens through a trade, but do you think he should be brought back next year?

I still take Edinson
Given the circumstances, Hamilton had to go.
My question for the RR braintrust: has there ever been a trade where both players had never made an all star team and made it the next year? Preferably one-for-one, but any would do.
sig lines are for suckas
I'm not saying
the Hamilton trade was or wasn’t a good move, but why did Hamilton “have to go?”
Michael: Now, the soldiers are paid to fight; the rebels aren't. Roth: What does that tell you? Michael: They can win.

The Narrons were gone
And Hamilton had made it abundantly clear that he wanted/need Johnny Narron around. Jerry’s firing made Johnny’s departure a certainty. Factor in rumblings of clubhouse tension due to the attention given to a “rookie”, and it made for a bad situation.
Personally, I make that trade every time, and I LOVE Hamilton. I may have said it before, but I’m not comfortable investing $10-15 million per year (a steal!) in someone who could relapse at any time. It’s pessimistic to be sure, but remember, baseball contracts are guaranteed. And what happens if he blows out his knee/shoulder/whatever and needs surgery? Do you prescribe him pain medicine knowing that was what led him down the path of destruction previously? And how does he cope with the downtime?
Too big of a risk in my opinion, at least when you’re talking long-term.
sig lines are for suckas
You're probably
right. There was no way of knowing how either player was going to play this year or in the future. I just wonder if keeping Hamilton wouldn’t have forced them to trade Griffey. Plus Patterson would probably never have been signed to this team. Like I said though it’s all hypothetical. There’s no way of knowing.
Michael: Now, the soldiers are paid to fight; the rebels aren't. Roth: What does that tell you? Michael: They can win.

He needed Johnny Narron as a baby sitter
And once the Reds fired Jerry, it was just too awkward to keep Johnny around.
Also, it was apparently causing problems in the clubhouse – the supposed special treatment Hamilton got.
