Maybe Jocketty has risen from his nappy.

From ESPN Insider today:

Reds scout Texas catchers

The Cincinnati Reds had a scout at the Texas-Oakland game on Saturday in order to take a look at catchers Gerald Laird and Jarrod Saltalamacchia.  The Rangers are apparently willing to part with one of the two, and the Reds are looking to add a catcher since none of their three catchers are under contract for next season, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Now, I know there are always scouts at games, but isn't it nice to think that maybe Uncle Walt has noticed that Texas has a surplus of young talented catching prospects and that the Reds have no catchers signed for next year?  I'd personally like Saltalamacchia because that's a fun name to say (Tigrmetrics?).

What is the likelihood of this actually happening?  What would it take to get it done?  Would a Bailey / Thompson plus one or two marginal prospects be enough?

I know we've surmised about this before, but I just like to hope.

Man oh man

I’d be sooooooo happy if they grabbed one of those guys. I’d prefer Salty as well, and I’d throw out a Bailey/Thompson/prospect offer and see if they bite.

On another angle, in the expected scenario where Dunn is a goner, do you make a run at Mark Teixeira and move Votto to LF next year?

I've gone back and forth on Teixeira

and I’ve decided that I think the $16-18 million a year could be better spent elsewhere. I’d rather they made a run at Sabathia if they are going to spend that money mainly because I think Frazier and Yonder (if he ever signs) will be bring some potent bats to the Majors in a year or two and they will need a place to play.

I agree

After what I have read about Teagarden he is the played I would prefer. He is the only catcher they have for whom I would give up Homer. He has a high OBP in the minors and is said to be excellent behind the plate. I dont think Laird is an upgrade over what we have now and the other 2 guys they have are not that solid defensively.

This is the perfect deal for Bailey to be in.

Change of scenery deal, going home to Texas… and the Reds get their catcher of the future. Common Walt!

thats dumb

Anyone who is trying to cough up Bailey better make their opinions known now because once your off the boat dont be expecting to jump back on in a year when he is a ma fudgin all-star terroring shit up!!!!!!!! Look at Edinsons stats his first starts he was like 1-10, think the Rangers fans regret hating on him, not as much since they got Hamilton but you get my point, it takes time, too many people are jumping ship on Homer its stupid

Brent Jonathan Beck

by Brent Beck on Jul 29, 2008 11:32 AM EDT up reply actions

Making my opinions known.

I think he’s going to end up a great pitcher, but he needs a change of scenery. His personality’s already worn him to the media and his teammates, and the home fans are starting to sour on him as well. Too many terrible starts after coming up with huge expectations has made him a punchline in this town, and we finally have the depth to make a deal like this (barring injuries, of course), He could end up being exactly like what Volquez was to Texas. I think the Rangers fans will be just fine with Hamilton, and I think that this can be a similar deal if we were to get Salty and a low minors pitching prospect in return. If Salty ends up being the next Bench, or hell, the next Bo Diaz, I’d be fine giving up a head case like Bailey. I still think he’ll be a “ma fudgin all-star terroring shit up!!!!!!!!”[sic], but not in Cincinnati. He’s a perfect fit in Texas, being it his home state, and they’re looking for starting pitching in return for one of their catchers. So, as I stated before, pull the ma fudgin trigger, Walt!

I'm with ya

Do not deal Bailey! At the very least, do not deal him now. His stock has NEVER been lower and I’d be willing to bet it will never again be as low.

Bailey will be fine. Besides, Thompson AND Bailey. Are you kidding? It only took ONE starting pitching prospect to get Hobbs, who was a proven thing. Salty has not proven his worth yet. He could be great and I really would like to have him but not at that cost.

by kennythered on Jul 29, 2008 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Rumor is that at least 20 teams have inquired about the Rangers catchers

I don’t know if he’s on the market, but I’d prefer Taylor Teagarden first, mainly because he’s supposedly gold glove level defense. There are questions about whether Salty can stay at catcher for the long term and Gerald Laird is just a cheaper version of David Ross, if you ask me.

It's a lousy night to be an atheist!

by Slyde on Jul 29, 2008 9:52 AM EDT reply actions

I agree.

I’d be really disappointed if we ended up trading away half the farm for Gerald Laird.

re:my slydeFeud

to catch everyone up, Slyde and I had a conversation yesterday about Edwin. With his recent offensive explosion, he’s risen to No. 2 on the team in RAR, but he’s still way down in total value because his defense has been atrocious. Slyde made the point that the team should consider moving Edwin to left field, and I said I didn’t think that was such a good idea given Yonder on the horizon. I imagine by 2010 at the latest, Yonder should be our starting first baseman and Votto should be moved to left (unless he can play third). And that’s when Slyde made his now-infamous statement that you can’t build a team around prospects who haven’t proven themselves.

Today he thinks it’s ok to build your team around prospects that can’t prove themselves, as long as you sign the new pieces to long, expensive deals.

The point is, do you guys think it’s a good idea to make decisions now that might impact a potential stud prospect down the road, even if that prospect hasn’t played a day of pro baseball?

What do you mean, "blank slate"?

by boobs on Jul 29, 2008 10:56 AM EDT reply actions

We Should trade EDWIN!

Why?

TWO WORDS: Juan Francisco

He is a star up and coming at 3rd base who is 21 years old right now, he played against the US in for the World Team before the All-Star game and stood out among his teammates and peers in the “rising star” game. The same team and game Joey Votto stood out for (Canadian) last year.

Full Name: Juan Ramon Francisco
Born: June 24,1987 in Bonao, Dominican Republic
Height: 6-2 Weight: 180 Bats: Both Throws: Right

We need pitching and catching. Edwin in my mind is expendable, not to mention a skum bag. I know this ho’ bag at my college (Miami University) who has been bangin’ the dude all the time since meeting him on spring break last year during spring training, haha, and the dude has a family and she is just a 21 year old ho’! Get him outta town.., (that is a true story)

on why we should look into interested buyers for Edwin

Brent Jonathan Beck

by Brent Beck on Jul 29, 2008 11:41 AM EDT up reply actions

I like Juan Francisco and all

but he’s posting a .786 OPS in A+. Edwin is posting an .838 OPS in the Majors.

At the same age, Edwin was posting better numbers in Double-A, though with fewer homers and more doubles. If Francisco was going to be ready next year, then I’d consider trading Edwin, but with the way EdE’s been hitting the last two months, it would take A LOT for me to consider trading him right now.

It's a lousy night to be an atheist!

by Slyde on Jul 29, 2008 11:43 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree

That we should not trade EdE b/c of Francisco but if we plan on keeping Dunn, which I think Castellini does, then we should look at trading EdE. Kepp can play 3B until Frazier gets up here, then we can look at moving Votto, positionally or on the trade market. Prospect Log jams at a position can be highly beneficial. It got MIL Sabathia, ATL Teixeira, and the list goes on. So I don’t really mind having Yonder and Votto, with EdE, Frazier, Dunn, etc. We just have to evaluate talent well and realize these guys best trade value. I really like EdE but I do think he is replaceable in the near future with our prospects.

If it has anything to do with him thats more reason to hate Marty B, what has he done for the Reds other than convey information via air waves. Screw him, he couldnt even fluidly verbalize Griffeys 600th homerun, he sounded like a babbling retard, great job “hall of famer”, maybe people need to start talking shit about Marty to make him shut his old mouth up. That dude pisses me off, and when his kids on FSN I am even more displeased because he sucks twice as much as his “dad”.

Fire MARTY, keep Dunn. Marty is an overrated d-bag who hates on his own team, I wish the cowboy would punch him in the stomach one night so we could save our ears from the player hater that is marty b.

Had to vent about Marty

He really pisses me off lately, I feel like a Hall-of-Fame announcer should be positive. If the dweeb wanted to have an opinion about players on a talent level maybe he should have gone into baseball operations not play-by-play announcing.

Marty always sucked at sports and always just wanted “in” with athletes. Now that he is officially a hall of famer he thinks he is a baseball expert but in reality he was only ever an expert at conveying information about what he saw to fans very well and did so in a great manner. No he thinks he is a baseball genius who can hate on our players whenever he wants and has knowledge about the game. Just because he has been watching baseball in an announcing chair for decades doesn’t make him Theo Epstein.

Send him to the Toronto Blue Jays, their GM would love to have him.

I Agree

But with all of the “offers” the Reds have gotten for Dunn it looks as if no one else values him. So we may be able to keep him not at a discount, but not for as expensive as one might think. Plus two first rounders would not be too bad anyway.

Are we going to get picks for Griffey too? I guess we’d have to decline his option the offer him Arb. Is that normal?

by kennythered on Jul 29, 2008 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't know if it's normal

but it is what would have to happen. The same with Dunn (minus the declining option). I’ve heard rumors that Griffey wants to stay in Cincinnati (why? I have no idea), so offering arbitration might be risky. Then again, that is likely just lip service.

I think the 20% rule

only applies to players still “under reserve” – less than six years of service time. The rationale being that they don’t have the right to shop their services to other teams. So for guys like Griffey I don’t think the 20% rule applies, but I could be wrong.

Funny Story

This is a little random, but it involves Dunn.

I was at a game last year and had seats a little past third. Adam Dunn had a sucky fielding play, and some fat guy wassss heckling him. Dunn yelled back one of these three things:

“Why don’t you try playing, fatass?”
“Why don’t you come on down and say that to my face, fatass?”
“Go get another hotdog, fatass!”

I think it was the first one, but either way it was the funniest part of the ballgame. He screwed up that play big time, and probably deserved to get heckled. I didn’t hear what the guy said, but the response was priceless. For him, it’s also probably the greatest story to tell his friends.
