Game 103: Reds vs. Padres
San Diego Padres at Cincinnati Reds, Jul 23, 2008 12:35 PM EDT

We have an afternoon delight today. It's a bummer because I have a meeting from noon until 3pm. It's going to be hard for me to pay attention to the meeting while reading the game thread.
Could this be the last time Maddux pitches in Cincinnati? Could this be the last time Arroyo pitches for Cincinnati?
I'm intersted to see if Dusty goes with a getaway day lineup even though the Reds are off tomorrow and home for the remainder of the week.

Valentin is hitting
.346 with 4 HRs (all in 2004 and 2005) in 26 lifetime ABs vs. Maddux. I’m going to assume he’ll be starting today.
I'm not having even a mediocre year.
My money's on Patterson starting
Because Dusty was going to start him against Peavy yesterday, but that “wouldn’t have been fair”.

It's a lousy night to be an atheist!
Votto batting eighth
right where he belongs.
What did he do to piss Dusty off?
I'm not having even a mediocre year.
He did push Josh Fogg's start back two days
He’s starting Sunday and not Friday, via the Fay.

Bruce was on first
Keppinger hit a double on a full count (hit and run was on), and Jay Hova scored from first, sliding into home while the outfielder was still picking up the ball. The kid’s got flair.

It bugged me
Because Welsh (I think) kept saying that with a full count, Bruce would definitely be running. But there was only one out. He didn’t necessarily have to be running.

only someone
who doesn’t know how to play the game the right way™ would say that.
I'm not having even a mediocre year.
what you don't realize is that Welsh was actually asleep when it happened.
and the ‘stache was doing the talking for him.
Weren't they saying
that Dusty should have sent Bruce because the Pads catcher got hit in the throwing arm with a foul ball, and was weakened? I can’t remember if it was George or Welsh, probably both though.
"My wife ain't never ran and got me no pheasant." - Fistbands
That's right
The trainer came out and everything. I was surprised Bruce didn’t run earlier in the count.
thay had to wait a few pitches to time the pitcher's delivery to the plate
What do you mean, "blank slate"?
it was welsh
and, yes, he insisted that Bruce should take off for second regardless because the catcher had an bruise on his arm. It was a little bizarre. I could just see Bruce taking off, getting thrown out and Chris and George being perplexed that a major league catcher could still throw with an ouchie on his arm.
But, thankfully, that flat out didn’t happen.

I'm not gonna be here for the game
but I just saw that the last time Valentin started at catcher, Hopper was playing CF! Whatever happened to NoHo? Did he join the witness protection program or something?
...because there's already someone posing as Jacob Brumfield
um, he sucked and Dusty doesn't love him
so they faked an injury
It's a lousy night to be an atheist!
Hopper was playing RF, actually.
Hairston started in center and Jr. was the DH.
Hopper went 0 for 5.
I'm not having even a mediocre year.
Oh, you're right.
He was talking about the last time Valentin started and batted seventh.
Of course, on April 16, Patterson played CF and hit leadoff. Surprisingly enough, he went 0 for 4.
As for Hopper, he had season-ending surgery on his elbow, Cy.
I'm not having even a mediocre year.
I was just confused about the posts a bit up
and yeah, I didn’t know the surgery was season-ending. I figured he was just hiding in Sarasota or something.
Even still, I’m hoping for a blowout for numerous reasons, one of them being: Coffey comes in to pitch while Valetnin is still catching, and we get to party like its 2006!
See y’all later. Go Reds.

Arroyo may not get the calls
but you can be plenty assured Maddux will.
We need good Arroyo today
I’d like to see him spun off to somebody else and get something decent in return.
sig lines are for suckas
I'm not sure I understand what we do without Arroyo.
That leaves us Harang, Volquez, Cueto, and Bailey next year. What sort of #5 are we going to come up with, let alone somebody to replace whichever of Cueto/Bailey starts sucking/gets injured?
I'm not having even a mediocre year.
what I mean is
is getting rid of Arroyo and replacing him with a crappier FA productive?
I'm not having even a mediocre year.
kyle lohse was a FA pitcher this year
he’s been much more productive than arroyo has
What do you mean, "blank slate"?
Everyone moves up a slot
In theory the young guys develop and all bump up a spot and you spend less to find a #5 than what you would be paying Arroyo, using that money elsewhere.
sig lines are for suckas
In theory...
in practice, one of the young guys probably regresses, one of the prospects gets injured, and the other one is only decent.

Reds interested in Street?
From Susan SLusser in the San Francisco Chronicle:
Near-daily Huston Street trade rumor: The Reds apparently have some interest in the A’s closer, according to sources, and the Mets also might make a run at trying to get him. ... Working in a non-save situation after the A’s scored five runs in the last two innings, Street pitched a 1-2-3 ninth. He has had a rough month, but Street said that his arm feels great and his stuff and his velocity are the same as usual.
