Game 102: Reds vs. Padres
San Diego Padres @ Cincinnati Reds
|
|
|
Man, I hope the Reds win tonight. I don't like it when they lose.
Lineup (via CTR):
- Jay Bruce cf
- Jeff Keppinger ss
- Ken Griffey Jr. rf
- Brandon Phillips 2b
- Adam Dunn lf
- Javier Valentin 1b
- Edwin Encarnacion 3b
- Paul Bako c
- Johnny Cueto p
In his last 39 games, Edwin is batting .331/.429/.661 with 9 doubles and 10 HR. You'd think the guy could bat higher than 7th, wouldn't you?

boy, am i glad LLM can get some regular at-bats. if he didnt, just think of how his pinch-hitting skills would suffer!

Posted an update, at 4:51 PM. Fogg had to be taken off the field during BP as he was hit in the face by a Joey Votto line drive. Let’s hope he is not seriously hurt.
I agree Slyde about the lineup. I guarantee this lineup works a lot better:
Keppinger
Bruce
Encarnacion
Dunn
Phillips
Griffey Jr.
Valentin
Bako
Cueto
Dusty doesn’t have to worry about stacking lefties, the Padres only have one lefty in the pen, and he isn’t all that great.

I don't see the logic of batting Keppinger first...
I think Bruce/EdE/Dunn/Votto/Phillips/Griffey wouldn’t be a bad way to go.

I didn’t realize that non-coaches threw BP. Are actual pitchers often involved?

Nah
I imagine he was standing in the outfield somewhere. Pitchers dont pitch BP, plus there is a safety screen there.

Fogg only pitches batting practice
when it’s being televised, there’s a defense behind him, and they’re keeping score.

Why?
Is Paul Bako still playing 40% of the time? He SUCKS. He isn’t as good defensively as Ross, I just don’t get it.

really?
He isn’t as good defensively as Ross
I think Ross is a liability behind the plate, especially on plays at the plate

Bako should start...
...every time Volquez or Cueto starts – they’ve had tremendous success together. The offensive difference between Ross and Bako is negligible, but the familiarity of the battery is far more important.

look at the numbers….Bako is getting on at a .294 clip, Ross gets on .403% of the time and slugs significantly higher. It’s no contest.

You'd have to be a total fucking idiot to start Valentin over Votto.
Come on, Dusty. Fay offers this:
Haven’t talked to Dusty Baker yet. But Joey Votto and Coco Cordero collided on that play in the ninth last night. Could be that Votto’s slightly hurt. Or could be an effort to get Valentin some at-bats. Valentin is 5-for-10 with a home run off Peavy.
I have to say, I hope it’s not the second reason. Ugh. Need I remind anyone? There is no situation in which LLM should bat over Votto:
LLM this year vs LHP/RHP: .188/.235/.375 / .246/.290/.316
Votto this year vs LHP/RHP: .286/.362/.473 / .269/.333/.444
Oh, and EdE should be batting where Keppinger is batting, it’s true.

by Gray on Jul 22, 2008 5:12 PM EDT 0 recs
Keppinger has really fallen off since the injury
He’s batting .239/.309/.295 since his return. JinAZ’s rating system has Kepp at more or less replacement level at this point. That’s a shame cause he was pretty much kicking ass before getting hurt. Not that I thought that he’d keep that up all season, but I think the injury likely hastened the drop-off.

Yeah...
And he’s only OPSing .612 against righties on the season.
But Cherry has kept it up even as Keppinger slumped—OPS of 952 over 71 PAs in the last four weeks, and his dropoff against righties hasn’t been too bad this year; he still has an OPS of .821 against them. It’s a good thing he isn’t starting today.
At least Griffey is showing signs of picking it up a bit, with an OPS of .822 in the past two weeks—though that’s only 46 PAs. But we know he can do nothing to get moved from the #3 spot…but what will it take to get Keppinger moved?

Oh, CTR thinks it's the latter reason.
“We gotta give Javy a couple starts here tojkeep him sharp,” Baker said. The stats say the two guys here that hit Peavy are him and Corey. I thoguth about giving Corey a start, but the last two starts he’s had have been against C.C. and Peavy, and not playing, that’s not fair.”
Proving once again that you can’t make these guys available without expecting Dusty to play them over better guys. You have to keep them sharp, after all.

From CTR. Okay, a bit of emphasis added by me:
“The dude’s good at it, it would have either been him or Arroyo, but Arroyo is pitching (Wednesday),” Baker said of Fogg bunting.“A lot of people don’t understand (using Fogg as a pinch hitter in the seventh inning on Monday),” Baker said. “When you have five extra men, you really only have four because you have to keep a catcher back and you really only have three, because Javy’s going to be my pinch hitter later in the game. That guy Hensley is throwing sinker, slider in a straight double play position and we want to get (David Ross) in a scoring position for Jay Bruce coming up next. I asked (Bill) Bray (the pitcher) if he’s a good bunter and he said he’s never done it. I said, ‘nevermind.’
“So I looked down the list and usually Fogg gets the bunt down. The other day I had Cabrera up there to pinch hit and bunt and I’d rather not do that because that guy’s prone to double plays and you don’t want to hit and run because Ross would be out by a mile. Through process of elimination and trying to figure out how to get that run home, it was Fogg.
“I had Fogg slash bunting and he hadn’t missed a sign all year. He was so locked in and focused on getting the bunt down, he missed it. I’ve done that with guys like Greg Maddux who can really bunt.”

Yes, but going to the freedom game will cost you $22.00
No charge for parking, of course. but for $22.00 you can get the VIP seats which include a tasty buffet (again at no charge) and terrific access to any seat in the place. Last time I was there we $1.00 beers in the 5th inning. And I saw a very good game with some quite unexpected stellar defensive play by both team’s SS and 2ndbasemen.
Last time I went to the Reds game (Friday) we actually won so it was fun enough. But I dropped about $100 by the time it was all over…point being the value at the Freedom game was higher than the Reds.
