Did Dusty really say this?
"Their averages are low, but their on-base percentages are still high," Baker said. "Their on-base percentages are higher than some of the guys who are hitting. I know they can hit, but it also helps to get on base and put a pitcher in the stretch. That's the thing. Most starters don't like being in the stretch."
That is odd since guys who draw walks are nothing but base cloggers. And furthormore he said...
"I still wish their averages were higher," Baker said. "You want everything, but if you look around baseball, there's not a whole lot of everything. You're seeing a lot of low averages with some high production and a lot of strikeouts."
This is a radical departure from many of his previous comments about OB%. I mean I wish he would move Griffey down in the lineup, but atleast he understands a hitter with a low average can still be productive.

these comments dont put me to rest at all
he thinks obp is important because it puts a pitcher in the stretch. yes, that’s one small part of it, but the real reason it’s important is because when you’re getting on base you’re not getting out. He still has no appreciation for that.
What do you mean, "blank slate"?

Compared to spring training comments
I don’t know the context of what he said while with the Cubs, but during March with the Reds, his comments (about clogging the bases) were in regards to guys taking strike three instead of swinging because he felt some folks, in his estimation, were looking for a walk (I think he was particularly targeting Votto at the time.)

Dustyevsky don't do math
His quote about pinch hitting with Fogg two nights ago:
“You’ve got a chance to get a bunt down seven or eight out of 10 times,” Baker said. “You’ve got a chance of getting a hit three out of 10 times, and a chance to hit into a double play four or five out of 10 times. It’s all about the odds, who’s pitching against you, the scoreboard and the inning.”
I don’t know the success rate for bunts, but that sounds about right. And I won’t quibble with the hit ratio. But you could have a seven man infield and you still wouldn’t see a 50% double play rate.

As I demonstrated in the next
FanPost™, for Dusty, it’s all about the odds.
I'm not having even a mediocre year.
