Farmers only: A lot to like

Danny Dorn
Dorn

Triple-A: Ben Jukich wasn't so impressive in his debut for the Bats, but Carlos Fisher was. He struck out 5 of his 7 batters and earned the win in Louisville's 9-4 victory. Rob Mackowiak stretched his hit streak to 15 games, Chris Dickerson homered and Adam Rosales was 2 for 3 with 2 walks and 3 RBIs. Shaun Cumberland doubled in 2 runs.

Zach Cozart
Cozart

Double-A: Danny Dorn was 2 for 3 with a double and a walk, and Chattanooga outhit Mobile but lost 7-0. Ramon Geronimo struck out 3 of his 4 batters, and Chris Valaika was 1 for 3 to raise his Double-A batting average to .307.

High A: Todd Frazier homered, but that was one of only 3 Sarasota hits in a 5-1 loss.

Low A: Zach Cozart was 3 for 5 with a home run and 3 RBIs and Neftali Soto had 2 hits and 2 runs in Dayton's 13-4 win. For a guy with impeccable defense and a questionable bat, Cozart -- with his 12 homers and .800 OPS -- is having a great year. Matt Klinker struck out 6 in 6 innings. Dayton also lost 2-1 in the continuation of Saturday's suspended game.

Rookies: Tony Brown was 2 for 4 with a home run and 4 RBIs in Billings' 6-5 win. Dude's on fire his first month and needs a promotion. ... Humberto Sosa had 2 hits and 2 RBIs in the G-Reds' 5-4 loss.

chances we see Mackowiak in Cincy soon???

or is Patterson not getting demoted until after I kidnap Dusty.

by jacob brumfield on Jul 21, 2008 8:58 AM EDT   0 recs

i think it's coming soon

i would like to point out that he’s gotten just one hit in each of the past 12 games, and that his batting average has been steadily going down during his hitting streak. That’s hard to do.

What do you mean, "blank slate"?

Mackowiak is not on the 40 man.

Ben Jukich, pros and cons:

Pros: Got out a lot of bad situations like bases loaded no one out, and 1st and 3rd no one out, and just allowed one run.

Cons: Got in a lot of bad situations like bases loaded no one out, and 1st and 3rd no one out :)

is it just me

or are Dorn, Cumberland, Henry, Frazier, , Waring, Cozart, Valaika all pretty much the same player? I think Dorn may be the only lefty of the bunch, and Cozart has the best D and the weakest stick, but they’re all like, 5’ 10” to 6’ 1”, 180-195 lbs, “gamer” (i.e. white) sort of guys. who are going to get mad love from the fans if/when they get to Cincy.

...because there's already someone posing as Jacob Brumfield

by Cy Schourek on Jul 21, 2008 10:58 AM EDT   0 recs

i dont know

yeah, theyre all white, and theyre all between 5’10 and 6’3 and between 180 and 215 pounds, but doesn’t that describe 75 percent of the males in the U.S.? Plus, they all play either the infield or the outfield. I dont really get what you mean.

cumberland is also a lefty, btw.

I'm sorry

The correct answer was, “That’s racist!”

I should've honed it down to

Frazier, Waring, Valaika, Henry all strike me as the same. But then again, I’m incredibly uneducated about prospects…I’ll shut up now, I think.

i think it might just be my fault for not distinguishing these guys well enough

Sean Henry is an outfielder and a far lower draft pick than the other guys (20th round). Todd Frazier is a big, athletic guy who really doesnt fit with the others at all. Brandon Waring has a notoriously hole-y swing and is pretty much a one-trick pony. Chris Valaika is a decent-fielding shortstop, and he is a much better all-around hitter than Waring and Henry.

The guys in the system who seem really similar to me are Valaika, Frazier and Neftali Soto. They’re all athletic and terrific hitters who we drafted as shortstops with power but don’t field well enough to stay there. There’s no telling where any of them will end up. From what I’ve heard, Soto will end up in the outfield or third base, Valaika will be a second baseman or third baseman and Frazier will be at first or third.

S'okay

I’d rather get into Bubba Crosby’s pants.

Don't worry

It really is Bubba Crosby’s pants. Someone is selling a pair of Bubba’s game-used pants on eBay.

The story behind the auction is more interesting than the item (enthralling as Bubba Crosby’s pants are). They are being sold to benefit a scholarship fund in memory of a police officer killed in the line of duty.

The poor guy was murdered by a serial killer. And not just a garden-variety serial killer, but a bizarre Silence of the Lambs type. The killer apparently cut the scalp off one of his victims and used it as a disguise. A little girl reported a man in lipstick and a blond wig tried to abduct her. Later, the police realized the “blond wig” wasn’t a wig. The woman’s face had been cut off, as well as her scalp, and they think he probably tried to use her face as a mask, too.

"game-used", heh heh.

Did you pass on them? The winning bid was only $28…

I'm not having even a mediocre year.

by Gray on Jul 22, 2008 5:04 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I did not bid

I’m not really a collector. I have too much stuff as it is. I need to get rid of things, not acquire more.

But I do like seeing what other people buy and sell on eBay. The winning bidder is someone who bids on Bubba Crosby items a lot. The person bidding against him is a probably a dealer (who did win Gary Sheffield’s pants for $32).

Chris Dickerson

should definitely get a look as our CF, and not just for next year. im just eyeballing his stats, but he has been pretty damn good the past year+. his OPS is around .800 and he supposedly plays a pretty high quality CF. his K rate is still pretty concerning (almost 29% this year) but it is down a tad from previous years and his walk rate is a tad up. he is a damn sight better than Corey Patterson and should at the very least have his roster spot by next month. there arent too many guys in AAA right now burning things up, but Dickerson has been solid. im pleasantly surprised by this.

please dont shit on my dreams. i dont want shit on my dreams.

Cozart

Looks like his offense is starting to get a lot of attention. If he can keep hitting at AA and AAA (next year), the Reds might have one less problem to address in free agency next year.

From Kevin Goldstein (BP):

A second-round pick last year, Cozart entered pro ball as an outstanding defensive shortstop with little offense to offer. The first part of that equation hasn’t changed, but the offensive aspect of his game has taken a shocking turn. After hitting just two home runs over 184 at-bats in last year’s pro debut, Cozart just slugged his 11th and 12th home runs of the season over the weekend, and is now hitting a shocking .269/.330/.470 in 70 games for the Dragons. The on-base skills are still lacking, but the power development is downright shocking, and all he needed was some kind of offensive upside to project as an everyday player in the big leagues, because the defense really is that good.

The next JJ Hardy,

I would most certainly take that!
