Is this what Cincinnatians woke up to in their morning paper?

I am not in Cincinnati anymore, but still check out the Enquirer's coverage of the local teams on line.  Today, I was looking forward to reading about the Reds' impressive showing against the formerlly hotest team in baseball hoping to find some quotes from players and even Dusty to see if there's any evidence he's regained his sanity.

So, what do I find?

Star-divide

The city of Cincinnati's paper of record had to pick up the AP wire story of the game.  The damn game was at home a few blocks from the paper's office and they couldn't be bothered to have someone cover the game?  I hope I am mistaken and this is just an online glitch.  What was in your morning paper today?

You must be thrilled to not be living in Cincinnati, the last bastion penny pinching whiners.

Where ever you are living now most assuredly will also have more intelligent and comprehensive coverage of the Bengals too. The Cyclones won a league championship here and I don’t think they even got a picture in the paper..but then again the Enquirer is a pretty terrible excuse for a newspaper…Exhibit A = Paul Daugherty.

Enquirer

Fay is taking the Mets series off . . . not that anyone noticed. In fact, the AP game recap is probably better than what the Enquirer puts out anyway.

BTW, I thought this was going to be a Fanpost about the Orioles acquiring Juan Castro from the Rockies. Now THAT’s news.

On a related note

The fishwrap here (Columbus Dispatch) has decided it makes more sense to entirely outsource coverage of the Ohio major franchise teams that are not located in Columbus, instead linking to content from newspapers in Dayton, Cleveland, and/or Cincinnati.

I think I remember reading that they were trying to set up some sort of cost-savings agreement with those papers that they would provide coverage of Columbus’ pro teams (Crew, Jax, OSU) in exchange for their coverage of the Reds/Bengals and Browns/Indians.

Newspapers are really struggling

The economic downturn is killing their ad revenue. Never mind the internets siphoning away their subscribers.

From the NY Times:

For newspapers, the news has swiftly gone from bad to worse. This year is taking shape as their worst on record, with a double-digit drop in advertising revenue, raising serious questions about the survival of some papers and the solvency of their parent companies.

..."Never in my most bearish dreams six months ago did I think we’d be talking about negative 15 percent numbers against weak comps," said Peter S. Appert, an analyst at Goldman Sachs. "I think the probability is very high that there will be a number of examples of individual newspapers and newspaper companies that fall into a loss position. And I think it’s inevitable that there will be closures in this industry, and maybe bankruptcies."

Analysts and newspaper executives find themselves revising their forecasts downward every few months, unable to gain a stable footing on a sinking floor. Papers have cut costs by shedding thousands of workers, eliminating some distribution routes and printing fewer, smaller pages, but profit margins continue to shrink.

newspaper companies wish they could pull an RIAA right now.

It’s really kind of fascinating to think about. I’m a huge newshound with, admittledly, a bunch of niche interests. All the same, Wall Street Journal, NYTimes, and the Washington Post all get delivered to my apartment desk for free for whoever wants it. I never do. I can just read a few different internet news sources (Al-Jazeera, CNN, Slate, Zaman if you’re interested) and supplement it with blogs I’ve found over the years.

I’ve never rooted for the “local” team, mostly because I’ve never had to. I’ve never felt like I was forced into an ideological decision because I never got to see the other side. This is all a good thing, right? But then again, all the newspapers are going downhill because of it, which is a bad thing, right? But as long as the news is out there, I can rely on a blog I like to tell me what happens when there’s a shooting outside of the Istanbul US Consulate instead of trusting sketchy wire reports. Good times for me, not for WaPo.

Btw, I really dug this line, Officer Dibble:
