Burton to the DL - Coffey gets the call
The Reds have DL'd another important cog in the machine as Jared Burton has been placed on the 15 day disabled list retroactive to July 11. I was at the game last night and Burton warmed up but not used. He appeared tp be throwing without discomfort and I can only surmise that he had a negative reaction to getting ready, after the game was over and was therefore Dl'd. I also don't know how much blame (if any) to put on Dickpolehead and Dustbrains. Athough my kneejerk reaction is that if a pitcher's having physical problems, somewhere in the mix is Dusty Baker. Without Burton the team is forced to rely on Stormy Graves back as the set up. He's actually been pretty decent recently, here's hoping he'll keep it together until Burton is reinstated.

The link goes on to say that Coffey's back up to fill the bull pen vacancy
Here’s hoping that he finally has a breakthrough and finds a way to become a more consistent and effective pitcher. And that he doesn’t start running full steam in to the game from the pen.

you just beat me to the post ....
i don’t understand why herrera wasn’t brought up …. options perhaps?
What are the specifics of the this trade rumor?
I would not expect that we could hang on to Affeldt and would be relieved (no pun intended) to see Stormy gone before he completely melts down.

both players have used an option this year
so options wouldn’t be the issue. I’m guessing it’s a righty-lefty thing.
It's a lousy night to be an atheist!
maybe that's been the problem... we could turn Coffey into a lefty...
People Don't Kill People. Burning Couches Kill People.
How on earth is this Coffey
and not Herrera, Adkins, or Roenicke. This is retarded.

No.
Not “retarded.”
Mentally challenged.
Hey Dusty...Are you sure you're OK? You might need an MRI.

i'm hoping that's because they don't want to burn up herrera's options.
perhaps burton will be back soon and we can ship coffey back to louisville since nobody cares about his options.
Herrerra has already been up with the big club.
He must be on the 40-man already. Therefore no wasted option (I think?).

options, per wiki
OptionsIf a player is on the 40-man roster but not on the active major league roster, he is said to be on optional assignment—his organization may freely move him between the major league club and the minor league club. If a player is on the 40-man roster and not the active 25 man roster for any part of more than three seasons, he is out of options and may not be assigned to the minors without first clearing waivers. However, if a player has less than 5 years of professional experience, he may be optioned to the minors in a fourth season without being subject to waivers. If a major league player is ineligible for free agency and “has options” remaining, his team may option him to a minor league team without consequence. This is usually what is meant when players are “sent down” to the minors. Likewise, when a player on the 40-man roster is added to the active major league roster, he is “called up” to the majors.
I believe that to be the case.
We’ve already used his option for this year, so we can move him up and down, no problem.

6/28 - 7/6
During this stretch Baker threw Burton out there in 6 of the 9 games. Burton never threw more than one inning in each appearance, but that’s pretty heavy usage for a guy with his history of shoulder problems. He should not have been used in the July 4th game against Washington, when he pitched in the 8th even though we were up 3-0.
One bright side
At least it’s retroactive to July 11. We’ve already got a week of DL time under our belts. Only 8 more days until he can come back.

It's been a few years,
but he missed parts of two seasons in the minors bc of shoulder issues. IIRC one of the reasons the A’s let him go in the Rule V.

Well here's a quote by Mr. Coffey re: The Fans
"They’re always on me. They’re just waiting for me to fall."
Todd Coffey quote - but I lost the link.
Todd, I’m a fan and I hope hell that you DON’t fail. So fuck you get out there and pitch.

Yes, this is a bad thing. However, we could be Orioles fans:
From MLB Transactions 7/19:
Baltimore Orioles
Acquired Minor League INF Juan Castro from the Rockies in exchange for Minor League INF Mike McCoy; purchased Castro’s contract from Triple-A Norfolk and outrighted INF Freddie Bynum to Norfolk.

Coffey is back and it's looking like the bad old days
Fogg is now an important piece of the rotation. We’re hoping Coffey can pitch like it’s 2006 (really. We are Todd. I don’t know if this is one of those things you have to do to motivate yourself, but we’re really, really, rooting for you. You’re not Patterson, afterall). And let’s hope Bailey turned a corner before the ASB. Hope Hope Hope.
Meanwhile, I may just drive up to Baltimore one day to heckle Castro. Anyone down?

i was at work today totally out of the loop
and thinking there is no way Todd Coffey will pitch in Cincinnati again this season. He will probably be the first off the 40 man roster if a space were needed.

don't forget Alexander Smit
yes, we have a 24 year old Dutchman in high-A on our 40 man. You try to reason that one out.
