Tracy Jones: Hamilton for Volquez trade is worst in Reds history

I really wish there was not a word minimum for each post, because I would just have the title and an empty post.  Its all you really need to know.

At roughly 5:00 PM, Tracy Jones was for some reason allowed to be on WLW for a show he did on his own.  He said something to this affect:

I have said in the past that I thought the Edinson Volquez for Josh Hamilton trade was a good trade and that I would do the trade again if it was offered now.  I've changed my mind.  Write this down, because I like being right and I'm right a lot: The Edinson Volquez for Josh Hamilton trade will go down as the worst trade in Reds history.

Now, you are surely reading this thinking to yourself, "He must be excepting the Frank Robinson trade."  Nope.  He followed:

Even worse than the Frank Robinson trade.

Ahh, the dim witted, lazy, out of shape, (just to complete the Adam Dunn trifecta,) Cincinnati media.

I know firsthand that he cannot believe that people just do not get that he’s joking. It’s funny stuff to me. Doc on the other hand….

He really isn't

He’s always been nice to me and other people in my presence. I think he plays up the pomposity/arrogance on the air since it’s the persona he has affected over the years.

Trust me. I swear a radio host could say damn near anything and get five people to call in and agree with them. It’s astounding.

clear channel

did the phones ring afterwards? operation successful, if so.

the Tracer is a good dude. and Hobbs is having an almost historic season, but trading him for an all-star #1 ace is never going to be considered an alltime worst trade.

Best Trade the Reds Ever Made?

July 13, 1988: Traded by the Cincinnati Reds with Pat Pacillo to the Montreal Expos for Jeff Reed, Herm Winningham, and Randy St. Claire.

Winningham and Reed played crucial roles in the 1990 postseason.

Thanks, Tracy.

Speaking of trades, Joe Blanton is a Phillie.

He was acquired for SS Adrian Cardenas, P Josh Outmann and OF Matthew Spencer. Nice haul for Oakland. Baseball America ranked Cardenas Philadelphia’s No. 2 prospect and Outmann No. 4. Spencer is a struggling High-A OF.

By comparison, the Reds’ Nos. 2 and 4 prospects, respectively, are Homer Bailey and Johnny Cueto. I am pleased that Krivsky didn’t make such a deal for Blanton over the winter.

Christ, even with the questionable haul, Oakland is becoming Tampa West with these trades

Nothing can touch the Harden deal, though. That was just obscene.

Not a bad deal for either side, imo

Philly really needs another starter. Myers is on the DL and has been spotty all year, while Milton Eaton has regressed during the last month and should be kicked to the curb. Blanton doesn’t have a pretty ERA right now but his peripherals indicate that he’s been unlucky (FIP is about a run lower than his ERA), and he’s been a pretty consistent league-averish, 200 IP guy the last few years (though I do wonder if he’s suffering from some fatigue due to throwing 230 IP last year). He’s more dependent than most on his defense, especially in the infield, but that’s not a problem for the Phillies. Also, I don’t think he’s FA eligible for a few more years so he isn’t just a rental.

Cardenas is a good prospect. He’s 20 and doing very well in high A, but he’s already been moved to 2B and he’s blocked there. Outman is a AA lefty with decent velocity but some control issues and has already been moved to the bullpen. I’ve never heard of Spencer but he sounds like a throw-in, which makes the trade essentially Cardenas for Blanton. I would’ve thought that Cardenas would get someone better, but he’s still only the no. 3 prospect in a weak system.

  • Forgot that Myers is in AAA. Not on the DL anymore.

I like old Tracy

Yep, he’s inflammatory and egotistical and sometimes says some pretty strange things BUT he is right a lot. Plus he doesn’t put up with sMarty’s drivel. 5 years from now we’ll know if this trade was the a good one or not. Tracer just trying keep interest going for a team that can’t win when they have a substantial lead in their own ball par and a $46M closer.

I am probably the only person (other than Jones) on the planet who thinks that Tracer would be an ideal manager for this specific Reds team. He has the energy and bluster and confidence that desperately needs to be injected into this group of players.

I don't know about that.

I’m too young to remember Tracy as a player, so all I know of him is as a blowhard radio host. I’d give him a shot as manager though, because that would mean Dusty isn’t there and almost anything would be an improvement. Where’s Pete Mackanin when you need him?

I rememberTtracer as a player

He was really talented. I don’t know why but he never was consistent. He was fun to watch and played like a maniac…had some pop in his bat. I saw him lead off a game in St. Louis years ago with a mamoth drive high in the LF 2nd deck… He was as full of himself then as a player as he is as a blowhard talkshow host. I’d rather listen to him any day than P. Doc or Cutler or (fill in the blank).

As I recall

He was your typical overrated white boy who idiots love because he looks like he is hustling when his talents make him best suited to being a role player on the bench.

Well, it is true that our pitcher's suck

C. Trent gives us this little nugget.

Did you know pitchers are hitting .205 off of Reds pitchers? Is it just me or does that seem really high? (It is, I just looked up, the average for pitchers in the National League is .138).

by Brendanukkah on Jul 18, 2008 12:34 PM EDT   0 recs

i seemed like opposing pitchers are killing the Reds

but than i thought I could just have a circumstantial memory of things like Sabathia.

Not the best example

Arroyo and Cueto sucked at the beginning of the year. Absolutely sucked. Now, they are playing great. I want to see the batting average and team ERA from the last 20 games. That is what I care about. Not what happened in May.

Anytime

You quote the lunatic ravings of a radio or TV talkshow host who is trying to attract ratings, you run the risk of actually fooling yourself into thinking that the host actually belives what he/she/it is saying.

Rush Limbaugh is the perfect example.

I used to like Tracy Jones, before he started with all the Richard from Indian Hill (or wherever) shit about the Diamond Seats and the ham and eggers. Then it got tired and I stopped listening. Now I’m happier. It got even better when I got to stop listening to Sportstalk on WLW after Furman got canned—not that I listened every night, but listening to the same mouthbreathing callers spout crap about the subject du jour has gotten real old.

I prefer a community of (mostly) knowledgable fans, which is why I’m here. (I only say mostly because I’m involved in it)

Is Richard a real person?

because he just seems pathetic, and I feel bad for him whenever he calls in. Especially when Tracy starts telling him his kid is a little fatass who needs to learn to behave himself.

Tracy Jones is a joke

This trade may still be the second worst in the history of the Reds franchise. But only time will tell.

by Brian B on Jul 18, 2008 5:40 PM EDT   0 recs

Volquez for Hamilton

I don’t see how this is a bad trade for either team. I think it is a phenomenal trade, but everyone acts like the Reds only got a bag of peanuts back. Volquez is a favorite for the Cy Young.

Maybe if Volquez was addicted to drugs and came back miraculously from it he would be considered the greatest player in history. America loves a good comeback story.
