Reds pull away with 10 Ks from Volquez

Tenks_medium

Feels great to do that again. It's Volquez's first 10K game since May 23, when he struck out 12. He also tied Tim Lincecum with 126 Ks for the major league lead. Couldn't have done much better.

I'm excited for the 2nd half

My wife had brunch in Dayton today and brought some Dayton Dragons cards. pretty cool cards from Bob Evans. And there was a Dragons legend card of Johnny Cueto. It’s been a good day tater

Apologize if this question was answered in the game thread

But how can Burton not pitch the eighth? He didn’t pitch the eighth last night either and both were huge situations.

The only explanation can be that he’s hurt, but he sure hasn’t looked it. He’s been absolutely lights out lately. Yea Weathers got the job done, but not without the typical angst.

I hope there’s an explanation and it’s not Dusty f*ing around. I can’t think of a better way to kill a roll like the one he’s been on than to start fixing something that isn’t broken.

by bengalred on Jul 12, 2008 10:32 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It was discussed in the game thread

But who knows what the answer is.

Someone pointed out that Weathers’ home/away splits are extreme. He’s a very good pitcher away from GABP.

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

by BubbaFan on Jul 12, 2008 10:38 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

But Dusty doesn't seem to pay attention to any kind of split

so why would he start now? And Burton has been a very good pitcher home and away. Maybe Dusty could hear the stats.

I’m probably making a bigger deal than it is, but it’s just the kind of seemingly innocuous thing Dusty does that gets a guy (Burton) a little bent out of shape, he lets it affect his play on the next time out and then Dusty uses it as an excuse to plug in Weathers for the rest of the season.

How’s that for a reach?

by bengalred on Jul 12, 2008 10:45 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i think the most intriguing theory postulated was

that Stormy is being showcased for trades. you know, let everyone see that he can still handle it in tough situations. if this is really what Walt has in mind, im impressed. but really i just think its a matter of Dusty drutherin’ his vets.

6 back from the wild card bitches!

please dont shit on my dreams. i dont want shit on my dreams.

im in this boat as well

maybe just giving burton a break for the a.s. break too but definately showcasing ole stormy for some trades

Hear that, every other team in the majors?

David Weathers can be a quality contributor in YOUR ballpark (which is not Great American Ball Park), for the small, small fee of a decent prospect.

Hey, when your favorite team wins it's fun!

who knew?

So hey, umm....do you guys mind if I have this fruit roll-up?

by chandrathan on Jul 12, 2008 10:41 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Now only six out of the wildcard!

Pirates got four in the bottom of the ninth to tie the Cards, STL got the lead back with one in the 10th and then 2 more from Pittsburgh in the bottom half to win 12-11.

Second half charge!

by bengalred on Jul 12, 2008 10:48 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

We're going streaking!!!!

If the Reds can win tomorrow, that will be 8 of their last 10 heading into the break. Who’s up for a little streakin’?

6 games back

I think being just 6 games back in the wild card race means that the Reds won’t trade Dunn. They might (and should) trade Arroyo, because they could get better just by not running him out there every fifth day, but they won’t take away that chance at the wild card. If Harang reverts to his normal self and Cueto continues to improve, they’ve got a decent shot. Should they get there, hey, you’re only two series away from the World Series.

I think they’ll pretty much stick with what they’ve got. If they can’t resign Dunn, they’ll take the picks, which might be about as good as anything they’d get in a trade.

There could be some intrigue toward the end of the season after all. (I fully realize that I was advocating a total sell-off not long ago.) Then again, every time they get back to near .500, they slump. We’ll see how the next two weeks go.

Just Imagine if...

Harang returns from the DL after 15 days and pitches like the Aaron Harang of old.

Arroyo is good more than he is bad for the rest of the season.

Fogg can keep up the pace he has set in his last two starts (I think it is resonable to expect that, he is basically a below average but not completly awful pitcher for his career, he isn’t a bad 5th starter at his career numbers.).

Volquez keeps up the pace.

Cueto puts up similar numbers, with the good and the bad.

The bullpen holds up.

The offense does what it is capable of, with the exception of the catcher, this team has players at every position who are capable of above average production.

Dusty injures himself and spends the rest of the ear in rehab, allowing Slyde to run the team via email from his basement.

I’m not saying the playoffs are likely, but I do think it could be “interesting” the Reds have played below their abilities and the Cubs are a good team, but I think Dempster and the rest of the team will fall back to Earth, and be mortal in the second half.

i think Griffey might rebound a little

i mean there has to be something left in the thank, right?

I hope he does at least. Too bad it never really worked out for him in Cincinnati.

Triple-A

Chris Dickerson and Luis Bolivar homered in Louisville’s 9-3 win over Buffalo. The Bats beat up on one-time talent Jeff Weaver in the first three innings, then one-time talent Bryan Bullington in the next three. Louisville kicked Bullington around on June 30 when he was still with Indianapolis (the Pirates’ system). The Pirates called him up, then put him on waivers intending to send him back down before Cleveland snatched him up. Maybe not a great idea on the Indians’ part. The Cleveland Indians, that is. Great move on the Indianapolis Indians’ part. Bullington was the overall No. 1 pick out of Ball State in the 2002 draft.

Double A

Danny Dorn had 2 homers in Chattanooga’s 13-3 win. Chris Valaika sat out to travel to today’s Futures Game. (Don’t forget: 12:30 on ESPN2). Robert Manuel struck out 5 in 3 innings of relief for the win. He’s having a nice season… 73K in 57.2 IP, just 13 BB, 1.09 ERA over two leagues this season. Of course, he’s 25 and started the season in A-ball.

High A

Todd Frazier reached base all four times in Sarasota’s 7-1 win. Juan Francisco was en route to the Futures Game (see above).

by Rick House on Jul 13, 2008 2:56 AM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Low A

Neftali Soto and Zach Cozart homered, but Dayton’s game with Beloit was suspended due to rain. Beloit took the lead in the top of the 7th (6-5), and Dayton had a runner on first with two outs in the bottom half. According to baseball rules, the home team must be allowed to finished its at-bat in the inning in which a tie was broken, so Dayton gets to finish out the full nine innings today.

Rookies

Catcher Kyle Day had 3 hits, including a homer, in Billings’ 7-3 win. ... Miguel Chacoa had 2 hits in the D-Reds’ 6-1 win.

I know everybody's excited about the recent run and all

but today’s game doesn’t look good. Not only are we facing a tough leftie in C.C. Sabathia which has Dusty planning to stack the lineup with right-handed batters, but we’re running out Homer Bailey against him. And I can’t imagine that Yost will be putting up his crappy leftie-stacked lineup today…

We ain’t no last place team are we Pops ?
