Keppinger is about to become my new object of scorn. It’s not really his fault though. He’s just a victim of Dusty’s Corey Patterson Memorial Batting Order By Field Position strategy. Keppinger hasn’t hit well in July. Like, at all. So why is he batting second?

I’m also starting to turn on Kepp as well. I’ve been going back and forth with some kid all morning on the Reds Facebook app who thinks we should trade Dunn for whatever we can get for him, and put Kepp in LF everyday because he can “hit a fly ball on command” and bunt.

Yeah.

This whole discussion stemmed from a poll on the site asking “what are you looking forward to most?” and the first two choices were, “trading dunn” and “signing dunn to a long term deal, eating all the left over salary, so we can’t compete anymore”. Just a tad biased.

It seems like there is no market for Dunn

But if the team has made up its mind that they aren’t going to re-sign him, then I’d agree with the kid….. unless losing him to free agency gets us draft picks next year. That might be better than trading him for anything.

Well, right.

That’s my point too. The other kid is convinced that Dunn is completely worthless, and that we might be able to get a bag of balls for him. I’m also in the group of people who want to see him walk in free agency and get draft picks, if only to stop the Dunn-bashers.

three fly balls.

Then again, he’s batting .571/.636/.857 in those situations this season.

For reference, Dunn has 27 PAs with Runner on 3rd and less than 2 outs with 7 fly balls. So, either way it’s a stupid reason to chose one player over another.

He does a good job being objective about the Reds, and doesn’t fall into the Marty/Brantley/Doc mold, which is refreshing.

I kinda hate when points like this are made without some context though

for instance, over his last 21 games, Edwin has had 41 base runners on for him, but only 21 RISP

Comparatively, Brandon Phillips has had 62 base runners over his last 21 games with 32 RISP. Yes, Phillips has performed better, but he’s had more opportunities too – and I’m not trying to dog on BP. I just picked him because he bats 4th, so I figured he’d have a lot of opportunities. Similarly, over the season, Phillips has had 70 more base runners than EdE. That’s not enough to make up the difference, but again the point is that EdE is being hampered by lack of opportunities, not just failure to perform.
