Game 85 Thread: Reds vs Pirates

Pittsburgh Pirates at Cincinnati Reds, Jul 1, 2008 7:10 PM EDT

Next Game

Pittsburgh Pirates
@ Cincinnati Reds

Tuesday, Jul 1, 2008, 7:10 PM EDT
Great American Ball Park

Zach Duke vs Edinson Volquez

Mostly clear. Winds blowing out to right field at 5-10 m.p.h. Game Time temperature: Around 80.

Complete Coverage >

W-LERAWHIPKBB
2008 - Zach Duke 4-5 3.99 1.49 36 27

W-LERAWHIPKBB
2008 - Edinson Volquez 10-3 2.08 1.21 110 48

The lineup

  1. Jerry Hairston Jr. ss
  2. Adam Dunn lf
  3. Ken Griffey Jr. rf
  4. Brandon Phillips 2b
  5. Joey Votto 1b
  6. Edwin Encarnacion 3b
  7. Jay Bruce cf
  8. David Ross c
  9. Edinson Volquez p

The Reds haven't hit Duke well in the past, except for Dunn.  But the offense has been doing much better over the last 3 games (.291/.387/.534).  Hopefully it's a sign of a turnaround for the bats.

Volquez was hit a little hard in his last start against the Blue Jays.  I'm calling it an aberration.  He'll be back on track tonight.  A win tonight will give the Reds just their second 4-game win streak of the season.

Look for big days from Joey Votto (yay!) and Jason Bay (boo!) today.  It is Canada Day, eh!

That's a good looking lineup

How could it look better? If it was written on the talismanic Megan Fox!

That lineup DOES look better...

Crolfer - isn't that just a bit more than you can handle?

What’s that Megan ? Once you’ve gone Crolfer you want it over and over !!!!

by crolfer on Jul 1, 2008 6:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah well the offense should be doing better, Kepps back, Jerry Jr's back and Copats on the bench

And tonight Dunn is in the 2 hole. Sadly ol’man Grif Jr. is in the 3 hole but other than that, as Megan says – If this is the way that Crolfer wants it..then so be it.

Eh, Griffey hit a homer yesterday

Let’s see if he can keep it up. I’d like to see Keppinger playing, but I’m not sure where he’d play unless you’re sitting one of the outfielders. But he gives us a decent option as a pinch-hitter, which is a nice little luxury to have. I’m really happy with this lineup.

In case you guys hadn’t seen it, here is a nice rip on people who seem to forget how valuable Dunn is compared to some other outfielders.

I will just say that EdE's been on fire the past several weeks

So while the season totals give nearly identical OPS (EdE: .248/.338/.462, Kepp: .320/.378/.434), over the past 14 days and eight games for each, the numbers are pretty different: EdE .292/.433/.583 and Kepp .296/.406/.370. Though if you just look at batting average-and I’m fairly certain you do-they look quite similar even over that period.

by Gray on Jul 1, 2008 7:17 PM EDT up reply actions

still i hope this isnt a trend

sitting kepp, even for eddie e because while eddie e does have streaks at time, keppinger is more consistent

Well, we basically have one too many.

C said that Dusty talked to Hairston and Keppinger about this yesterday or today, since there’s just one too many of Hairston/Kepp/Dunn/Bruce/Griffey/EdE. So he’ll be rotating them in as possible.

I’d take EdE over Keppinger, but against a LHP, I’d prefer Keppinger over Griffey, personally. He doesn’t like it when that happens.

They had Doumit caught off of 3rd after he overran the stop sign

Edwin got the throw, and Doumit made a circus dive around him, Edwin dove and tagged him TWICE before Doumit got back to the bag. Edwin jumped up, enraged and horrified at the call, a few seconds later he gets tossed.
